PASAR BESAR KEDAI PAYANG
Kuala Terengganu’s central market, Pasar Payang, is a popular market frequented by both locals and visitors. Besides fresh local produce, the market offers a variety of traditional snacks, textiles, handicrafts, trinkets and more. The nearby Waterfront Heritage Bazaar is another must-visit for visitors to Terengganu as it boasts an interesting selection of shops selling all kinds of local handicrafts and delicacies. BUKIT PUTERI
At 208 metres, Bukit Puteri (Princess Hill) is the highest point in Kuala Terengganu and offers a panoramic view of the Terengganu River. It is also the site of a former 19th century fortress. Relics and other reminders of its colourful past can still be found on the hill to this day, including a large brass bell, cannons, graveyard, flagpole and lighthouse. PANTAI BATU BURUK
Pantai Batu Buruk is a beautiful beach located just 1km away from the Kuala Terengganu city centre. A popular venue for kite flying and picnics, the beach is always a hive of activity. Cultural performances as well as demonstrations of traditional pastimes and games are often staged here on weekends. NOOR ARFA CRAFT COMPLEX
A pioneering and leading producer of hand-painted batik in Malaysia, Noor Arfa is known for its meticulous designs and quality fabrics. Located about 15km south of Kuala Terengganu, the 2.5-acre complex houses a manufacturing facility, demonstration areas, factory outlet and one of the nation’s largest batik showrooms. Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah is often referred to as the “Floating Mosque” as it was built on a platform in the middle of a lake. Pulau Duyong is a small island noted for its traditional boat building industry. ShoppingThe best shopping experiences in Terengganu revolve around its cultural heritage and vibrant cottage industries. An endless array of shops selling all kinds of local products can be found at the Payang Central Market and Bazaar Warisan in Kuala Terengganu’s city centre. Souvenir items include Terengganu handicrafts such as silverware, batik, songket, brassware as well as woven pandanus mats and baskets.
DiningTerengganu serves up a tempting variety of local delicacies which can be found almost everywhere in the state. Western cuisine is available at hotels while fast food outlets can be found in most major towns. Terengganu is well known for rice-based dishes such as nasi dagang with gulai ikan tongkol (spiced rice with spicy tuna curry), nasi kunyit (glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and turmeric) and nasi kerabu (rice mixed with various herbs, spices and vegetables). Other must-try local delicacies here are the keropok lekor (crackers made from a mixture of fish and sago), laksam (flat rice noodles in a rich fish gravy) and budu (fermented anchovies).
Getting HereTerengganu is accessible via an interconnected network of expressways and roads from all major towns and cities in Peninsular Malaysia. The state is also easily accessible by air with Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia offering daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu, just 14km from the city centre. Besides daily flights to Kuala Terengganu from Penang, Firefly also flies to Kerteh in Kemaman from Subang. Berjaya Air operates daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Redang Island.
Getting AroundGetting around Kuala Terengganu is a breeze as Heritage City shuttle buses ply a fixed route past the city’s top attractions. The starting point is at Taman Syahbandar, where visitors can choose from the two routes available. Taxis are also easily available in the city and major towns. Brightly-decorated trishaws are another attraction in Kuala Terengganu.

RANTAU ABANG TURTLE SANCTUARY
Rantau Abang is famous for being one of only six hatching sites in the world where giant leatherback turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. To know more about the turtles, head to the Turtle Information Centre. CHEMERONG WATERFALL
The multi-tiered Chemerong Waterfall is widely regarded as the highest waterfall in Malaysia. MEMORIAL BATU BERSURAT (MEMORIAL OF THE INSCRIBED STONE)
Dating back to the 4th century, the Batu Bersurat Terengganu is the earliest recorded evidence of the spread of Islam in the region. It is listed on the United Nations Memory of the World register, a UNESCO programme aimed at preserving the world’s documentary heritage. FIREFLY SANCTUARY, SUNGAI YAK YAH
Sungai Yak Yah, or Yak Yah River, is the site of Malaysia’s largest firefly sanctuary. It is located by the village of Kampung Ibok, 13km from the town of Chukai in the district of Kemaman. Visitors can take a river cruise along the 13km-long river to catch sight of the fireflies. Teluk Mak Nik, sometimes referred to as Monica Bay, is an important nesting ground for green turtles.
