The UglyThe UglyThe UglyThe Ugly --------------- For now, we must realise that we are living in a competitive world and universities around the world wants to attract the brightest and smartest students to conduct research with them. I was fortunate to be one of the UTHM delegates on an official 3-day visit to 3 leading universities in Hong Kong: 1. Hong Kong University (ranked 26 by QS World University Ranking 2013) 2. Hong Kong City University (ranked 104 QS World University Ranking 2013) 3. Hong Kong Polytechnic University (ranked 161 by QS World University Ranking 2013) I should note that Hong Kong City University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University have close similarity and transformation history as UTHM. Both the universities evolved from a technical institution offering Higher National Diplomas in various disciplines of engineering, science and technology studies to become one of the leaders in higher education in the region and the world. Currently, each of these universities has a total student population of 20,000 to 30,000, of which more than 5,000 are PhD and MPhil research students. Also, universities in Hong Kong have ready funds for students wishing to pursue their postgraduate studies.

Will UTHM attract the best students Will UTHM attract the best students Will UTHM attract the best students Will UTHM attract the best students to pursue their postgaduate studies?to pursue their postgaduate studies?to pursue their postgaduate studies?to pursue their postgaduate studies? Yes, but only if sufficient infrastructure, availability of resources and a suitable support system are in place. Some of the activities that UTHM should be focussing on are as follows: 1. Students completing their studies on-time should be made compulsory. 2. Increase in the numbers of qualified supervisors, providing good quality supervision and instruction to research students. 3. Availability of research grants and funds for postgraduate students 4. Availability of research laboratories with sufficient basic and advanced facilities. 5. Good technical support such as fabrication, setting-up and testing to ensure experimental work are conducted with the highest accuracy
and quality.

The GoodThe GoodThe GoodThe Good
------------------ A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is the highest academic degree which can be awarded by a university upon successfully completion of the study and its examination process. A PhD degree differs from other academic degrees through its full time research activities, with an average period of 3 to 4 years. Students are expected to conduct a comprehensive literature review related to the proposed research area and to identify methods in achieving the expected outputs of the work. By the end of the study, the student is expected to compile the research work and its findings in the form of a thesis upon which it will be examined by panel of examiners. By successfully defending the thesis, the student will eventually be awarded a PhD degree and is entitled to be called a 'Doctor'.
The BadThe BadThe BadThe Bad
--------------- Most students pursuing their PhD studies do not realise the full extent of the work until it is too late. They will eventually realize that huge sacrifices are required to be made from financial, time, energy and even health aspects. There will also be times when luck starts to desert you, causing the research work to be realigned which eventually results in longer periods for completion, sometime up to 5 - 7 years. From my personal perspective, such circumstances does not make good research work and the findings will eventually be obselete. Possible reasons for these are as follows: 1. Wrong research topic. 2. Wrong supervisor / lack of supervision. 3. Poor fundamental knowledge. 4. Financial constraint - e.g. no research grant. 5. Lack of proper facilities. 6. Lack of support from family and friends.
7. Others
How can we overcome these issues How can we overcome these issues How can we overcome these issues How can we overcome these issues and improve on our post graduate and improve on our post graduate and improve on our post graduate and improve on our post graduate research and studies in UTHM?research and studies in UTHM?research and studies in UTHM?research and studies in UTHM?
1. Provide continuous training to supervisors and the technical staff. 2. Increase intake of qualified international and national academic staff 3. Review the role of the Faculty's Deputy Dean on Research and Development. Should they be answerable to the Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies or to the Dean of the Faculty? As is the current practise, these Deputy Deans are answerable to both Deans. This consumes time and energy with work load for these Deputy Deans, while they could be focussing on the real issues in the Faculty. 4. The role of the Post Graduate Office in the university should also be reviewed. The office should be focussing on assisting and working closely with the Faculty in obtaining good post graduate students, ensuring quality post graduate programmes, teaching and supervision, as well as producing quality thesis. 5. Funds for supporting graduate studies should be organised and administered in a systematic and transparent manner. This will shorten the process and reduce bureaucratic procedures. 6. Generate a systematic monitoring and assessment for supervisors and students’ progress through an online management system. I believe UTHM will eventually be the leading southern hub for higher education in Malaysia and in the region but not before overcoming these challenges ahead. These challenges will only be overcome if we are willing to work together as a single unit and to understand the
needs for such activities.
