This is the first issue of Nautilus and the beginning of a new term,2015/16, for the Club. At the AGM held recently, members have elected a new and young team into the Committee, a team of mostly young and successful professionals. This is a record of sort, it is by far the “youngest” Committee in recent memory. It is our hope that with these new energy and vigour they could bring forth peace and unity to the Club as well as to further enhance the joy of clubbing. As a family Club, we must strive doubly hard to foster and preserve the many tenets of quality lifestyle within the Club. It is up to each and every one of us to live, and live up to such standards. One among which is to treat each other with dignity, and mutual respect, and be in possession of our civility in times of differences.
The Nautilus plays a very important role in keeping members abreast of the activities and pulse in the Club. It is very much an entity of, and by members. The editorial board is manned by volunteers from among fellow club members. If you love to write, or like to know more about our club, or simply to have some intellectual discourse with fellow members, you might want to consider joining our editorial board and be part of the action.

A new beginning……
A new dawn, a new ‘leaf’, a new look, a new start at PSC.
It is a special honor and a privilege to begin my term as President of the Penang Swimming Club. Having received the support from Club Members and Members of Sections & Groups, I am now tasked with the leadership of a new Main Committee who fully understand the need for addressing the pressing challenges and difficulties facing us.
With continuous support from fellow members, I am confident that we will be steadfast in the coming year in stabilizing our Club away from the turmoil that has recently been inflicted upon it. The MC’s aims are clear, and some of the inherited issues have already been resolved in the short period since the AGM.
The new MC are trusting the Club Members to judge us over time, and not just the short term, as we endeavor to accomplish our aims of satisfaction and understanding within the Sections & Groups and a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere within the Club generally, which will help rebuild and restore PSC’s stature as a premier club, not only within the State, but, within the Country itself.
On a personal level, I am proud to have been given this opportunity by the Members. It is my intention and desire to give the Club an MC that, by its leadership and example, will, over time, dispel the escalating prevalence, complexity and severity of misunderstandings between the Members.
In this, my first President’s Message, let me make one thing perfectly clear. As we embark on a period of change, this new MC will always prioritize the interests of the Club and its Members generally ahead of any individual Member, Section or Group. Members will appreciate this as the “bigger
picture”, and the thoughts of your new MC is that this is the single most important factor in re-establishing a feeling of equality and harmony.
As the MC of the Club we commit to ensuring that the Club is administered in compliance with the Rules and Bye-Laws at all times. Reviewing and tightening internal controls, developing standard operating procedures to minimize financial risk to the Club and to nurture and train a strong and stable club management team.
We must all recognize that every Member will at some stage, or in some capacity be a part of this process. Our Club belongs to, and depends upon, its Members. With this in mind, I would like to, personally, encourage PSC members to get involved. The MC are also members of Sections & Groups, so you are always able to reach out and to connect if you have ideas and suggestions that you feel may be beneficial to our Club.
Do not treat the MC as unapproachable. We work on your behalf. We will be there to listen, understand and to act when necessary. This is your MC and has been elected to represent you. You are the ever present eyes and ears in the Club, and the success of this, or any other, MC will always be largely dependent upon the support, cooperation and input of the membership.
Lastly, I sincerely wish you all Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Happy Malaysia Merdeka’s Day.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Opinions & views expressed in this

Board.
The Editorial Board reserves the right

Articles, extracts and notes published
in this newsletter are strictly

I would like to humbly introduce myself to you as the new General Manager of the most prestigious and beautiful club in Penang. In my current capacity, I would like to ensure you that my team and I are here to provide you with the best services possible. We are here to serve all members equally and passionately.
I would like to thank those of you whom I have met for your warm welcome and I look forward to meet as many members as possible in the near future.
Moving forward, the team and I aim to improve our services and the club’s facilities but our goal can only be achieved with the support, collaboration and cooperation from the PSC family.
In this regard, I am grateful and thankful to those of you who had given me your encouragement, guidance and assistance. My team and I look forward to your continuous assistance and support.
The month of May and June were quite memorable. On 18 May, we held a staff party at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel. The staff had a wonderful time and felt appreciated. We would like to thank the Management Committee and members who had contributed to the event.
On 5 June 2015, the Club celebrated its 112th year of founding and adopted “Happy Days” as the celebration theme. It is apt because we wanted all members to be happy and joyous when you spend your day in the club. I am happy to note that more than 600 members turned up to celebrate the auspicious event.
In July and August, more activities are being lined up such as the Mesra Raya Dinner on 31st July. It is an event to collect donation for an orphanage. Please support the event for a good cause. I hope you will mark the date on your calendar.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim members & associates a “Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.”
Thank you.
I am grateful and
thankful to those of
you who had given me
your encouragement,
guidance and assistance.

A walk down memory lane
In late 1958, our father Squadron Leader Charles Armstrong was posted by
the RAAF to Butterworth, with his wife Meg, son Patrick and daughters Susan
and Alison.
We lived in Penang for 2 years, spending much of our time at the Penang
Swimming Club. The pool was quite a central meeting point for RAAF families,
and many swimming carnivals were eagerly competed by Patrick and Susan.
On 28 April 2015, we sisters, now in our 60s, returned to Penang with
photographs from the old family album, to try to recapture our memories.
Our first visit was to the Penang Swimming Club, where we were given an
extremely warm welcome by the General Manager, Simon Cheng and his
administrative staff. We were able to compare photographs, noticing that
some things had not changed in the last 55 years, although extra buildings
had been added, the wading pool had changed shape and the diving boards
had been removed.
Among our memories is one of our 63 year old Grandmother (visiting from
England), taking swimming lessons to overcome her fear of water.
The day came when she swam the length of the pool unaided. Following this,
she was formally presented with the ‘Commonwealth Endeavour Award’ for
‘learning to swim at the age of 63’.
It had been 55 years, but the memories came flooding back as we wandered
around the pool. We thank the former General Manager, Mr. Simon Cheng for
being so hospitable and allowing us to enjoy this visit.

“Black & Purple” was the chosen theme for this year’s Annual
Staff Party that was held on Monday, 18 May 2015 at the
Evergreen Laurel Hotel.
It was certainly a night to remember as many beautiful ladies
and gents graced the evening, dressed in the theme color.
The ballroom was decorated in black and purple, accentuating
the theme for the night with free flowing beers enhancing the
gastronomical experience. Since karaoke played a main part
of the program for the evening, it would not be complete
without the staff belting out their favorite songs in the
audience of an appreciative crowd.
The party kicked off with a speech by our new General
Manager, Mr. Frederick Khoo who encouraged the staff
with the emphasis on “teamwork”. Mr Baldev Singh, the
club President then delivered a speech at 7:45pm.The
Main Committee Members joined the staff and were
treated to a sumptuous buffet spread.
The presentation of Fishing Competition Winners’ Awards
was presented by Mr Frederick Khoo. The winner for the
Fastest Catch went to Saad (1st Prize) with Mihat, the
Winner for the Heaviest Fish and “Most Fish Caught”,
both staff were from the Housekeeping Department.
Osman Ishak and Agnes Leow were presented with the
10 Years Service Award from the President.
Some games were played by the staff such as
“Eating the Biscuits” and some participated in the
“Superman, Ultraman, Spiderman and “Cicakman”
action game”. The selected and finalist staff for Best
Dressed Competition also performed some Catwalk.
Some staff participated in the “Best Singers
Performance”, and entertained the audience that
evening. The winner for the Best Dressed Female
went to Aryanti, and Berry Yeoh won the Best
Dressed Male Competition. Both were from F & B
Department. The Acting Actor & Actress Winners
for “Best Female Singer” went to Sugandhi from

was the luckiest person to win RM1000 cash
for the 1st Prize in the Grand Lucky Draw
Prize and some staff won prizes in the form
of cash prizes and electrical electronic items
contributed by the members and suppliers.
It was an exciting evening for all. The

Members’ Night“Happy Days”
Penang Swimming Club celebrated its 112th Anniversary Members’ Night on Friday 5th June 2015 with a great turnout of more than 660 members.
Staff and arriving Members were dressed for the “Happy Days” theme, as the bar was opened to the delight of the “early bird” arrivals.
Members were in good spirits with the initial two-hour free flow of drinks plus a varied buffet from caterers – “M/s. Indian Delights” and “M/s. James Foo Catering”.
After an opening address from the acting President, Baldev Singh, the evening’s entertainment commenced with the 4 piece “Superband Entertainment”.
Professional violinist Ms Rebecca Shih and Groups of Members’ Dance – “Rhythm Mix” -continued the upbeat “Happy Days” theme.
One young member, Tan Vae Lun, gave a rendition of the Bee Gees “Tragedy” which encouraged many members onto the dance floor.
This was followed by a Chinese song from Karaoke Duet Singers – Ms Sharon Lay and Vincent.
Our Master of Ceremonies, Adrian Yeoh, then took control of the evening’s programme, with Members enjoying the fun of his question and answer quizzes and Members participation games. Adrian then conducted the “Limbo Rock”, providing much laughter for entrants and spectators alike.
The Anniversary Cake Cutting Ceremony took place accompanied by Members singing Happy Birthday.
As the evening drew to a close, the music of Superband enticed Members back onto the dance floor, while the Lucky Draw provided a final thrill of anticipation followed by delight for the prize winners.
A successful and special evening for our Club, with much credit due to the hard work of our staff before and during the Event, our drinks sponsors, MC Adrian Yeoh and our attending Members.
Let us look forward with optimism to “same time next year”.

The Sport Excel Junior Swimming Meet 1st Leg was
held at Pusat Akuatik Hang Jebat in Melaka from
9 to 10 May 2015. After two days of highly competitive
competitions, the swimming team from PSC gave a
commendable performance to stay within the top five
teams, in terms of medals and total points accumulated.
On the medal tally, the PSC swimming team garnered
7 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze to finish at the 3rd position
after IBSC and PADE, thanks to our golden boy from
Group 4, Chris Chew, who swept 7 golds and 1 bronze
in all eight events which he took part in. The other silver
medal came from Chew Ho Yeng.
As for the total points accumulated, despite a rather small
team from the PSC, we managed to win 1095 points from
the efforts of all swimmers who finished at the 24th place
or better in the events they swam. We hereby congratulate
the swimming team for their brilliant achievements!
Congratulations again and we hope the team will perform

Pulau Payar TripOn 6 June, the scuba section organised a dive trip
for Sports Divers and open water ocean divers
to Payar Island to proceed with their course training
and assessment.
Basic safety and diving exercises were done by the
ocean divers such as pre-dive equipment check, buddy
check, and underwater exercises such as mask clearing.
For Sports Divers, more advanced exercises such as
deploying Surface Marker Buoy, Underwater compass
navigation, decompression practice and also dive leading
were performed.
The water around Payar Island for the day was excellent,
being calm and having clear visibility. After completing
the exercises, the Sports Divers proceeded to dive in a
nearby small island also known as Pulau Kaca. Among
the underwater flora and fauna spotted, were schools of
jack fish, parrot fish, and most notably the local resident
barracuda growing to about 4 feet long. Overall it was a
great trip and a holiday well spent!!
Any Penang Swimming Club members who are interested
in diving, please register with us today!! New ongoing

For more information about the diving course, please call

The 68th Annual Premier Knock-out Inter-Club Team Competition this year was held at the Chinese Recreation Club, Penang on 30th & 31st May with a total number of 8 teams participating. Although we were unable to get back all the players from our winning team last year but eventually we were able to form and participate to keep the tennis spirit in Penang going.
The players representing the club consisted of Heng, Lim Wei Kah, Sunny Ng, Alvin Lee, Jeffrey Peh, Lim Thien Thien, Chin Lih Jean and Ngiam Li Siok. We were up against Chinese Recreation Club who were seeded second in the tournament and with the home advantage it was indeed hard to beat for us.
With the lost to CRC, once again we were unable to advance to the semifinal in Tier 1 and were again placed in Tier 2 to retain the plate we won last year. We started off by beating Penang Sports Club (Black Team) to once again enter the final versus Bukit Mertajam Tennis Club.
In the finals, the BMTC were quick to put the match beyond us as they rushed to a 2-0 lead and this was enough for them to take away the plate from us. The team definitely was heartbroken but promises to train harder in looking forward to capture the plate back or advancing to the semifinal or final in Tier 1 next year.

The PSC Dancesport Members Night was held on 20th June 2015 at the MPH2 (low ceiling) and was attended by only Dancesport members of PSC. The guests started arriving at 7.00pm and after registering at the door, it was free seating among friends at eight round dining tables. It was a very informal and friendly gathering of friends who know each other through dancing and social gatherings in the club. The Chairman of Dancesport, Ang Lye Hin, welcomed the members to the function and shared with them the ideas of the Dancesport Committee. He also briefed them on the theme night called Colours Of The World on 4th July 2015 and informed them on the coming annual function of Tripartite where the three clubs, Penang Swimming Club, Royal Selangor Club and Singapore Recreation Club host a dinner and dance each year on rotation between Penang, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The coming Tripartite function wll be held on 26th September 2015 in Singapore and the Dancesport
members were invited to attend the function. The Chairman also informed about the setting up of a WhatsApp group for PSC Dancesport which will make it easier and quicker to inform the Dancesport members on matters relevant to them. After the speech, there was a question and answer session where members asked questions and gave their suggestions and the committee promised to look into these matters. After the speech and Q & A session, a sumptuous buffet dinner was served. The members chatted into the night and after that, many proceeded to the Club House for some serious dancing with music from the live band since it was a Saturday night. Overall, it was a very successful event which allowed the Dancesport members to communicate with their chosen committee and it also served as a platform for rejuvenation of friendship and camaraderie among the dancers in Penang Swimming Club.
