Moderation of Lesson Observation

For the last six months, SMK Sungai Maong has been chosen to embark on a journey of educational transformation under the Trust School Program. It was an honour to be among the chosen few but nevertheless, it has indeed been a challenging undertaking. This process is very demanding of the school community; its time, energy and ideas to fulfill the needs of each individual student, as well as to maximize their potential and subsequently, to complement them with the competencies, knowledge and comprehension to succeed in the 21st Century. Being in this system for six months provides new insights for all stakeholders of the school; the leaders and administrators, teachers, students, parents as well as the nearby communities are working collaboratively towards school improvement and sustainability. It can be said that they are moving up from foundation towards accreditation level. The leaders and management team of the school are actively planning, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the programmes through discussion, meetings and engaging in professional learning as they incorporate new ideas into their current practice, utilizing staff and resources effectively. Likewise,

teachers are also incorporating new and innovative pedagogical practices that are more effective, inculcating multiple-style instructional strategies and, providing conducive learning environments through group or pair work in doing task-based activities. Teachers are also constantly meeting up for continuous professional development such as panel meetings, peer teaching and also Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Next, students’ holistic development is emphasized as their personal, social, intellectual and emotional needs are identified and supported through their active involvement in co-curricular activities. Students are more positive, disciplinary issues are reduced, and their communication skills are improved. As a result, parents are now more involved and interested in the school activities and their children academic progress. Turnouts for Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meeting, Parents Teachers Day, Working Bees Day and Sports Day have significantly improved. Last but not least, networking and partnership with other schools, colleges, higher institutions of learning and nearby communities have been sustained and established. In conclusion, the transformation of SMK Sungai Maong is moving in the right direction following closely to the guidelines and criteria of the Four Standards for Trust School. The journey is still long but with everyone on-board having the same agenda, SMK Sungai Maong will eventually anchor in the harbour of great success.
