Hong Kong Hong Kong is a hub port serving the South Asian Pacific region and the entrance port of mainland China. It has a strong advantage in providing cargo services due to the high standard of its services and infrastructure compared to the lower cost airports in the region. Shanghai Shanghai is the power house for the economic growth of China. It has two airports which handle cargo including Pudong which manages 29% of cargo freight for the whole of China. The Yangshan deepwater port complex is currently in production and once complete will be able to handle 25 million TEU annually, making it the largest port in the world. Major industries: 3, 10, 12, 16, 23. 4. Shenzhen Shenzhen contributes strongly to South China’s economic develop- ment. It currently has 145 international ocean container transpor- tation routes to major export and import ports around the world. Kaohsiung The port of Kaohsiung is close to the industrial areas of South Taiwan and has large areas of surrounding land available for development. Kaohsiung is currently developing an offshore shipping center where bonded goods can be imported directly from China and re-exported internationally after repackaging and/or processing. Major industries: 7, 13, 14, 18. 6. Busan Busan is a business hub connecting Northeast Asia to China and Taiwan. The port of Busan handles about 43% of the nation’s total export cargo and 95% of the total container loads. Major industries: 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, 22, 23. 10. Tianjin The port of Tianjin is a gateway to China’s Northeast and vast Western region. Tianjin has announced an airport renovation and expansion project in an effort to become the air cargo transportation and distri- bution hub of North-East Asia. Guangzhou The port of Guangzhou is the biggest port for foreign trade in South China. International shipping lines can reach more than 300 ports in more than 80 countries and regions from Guangzhou. Kobe The port of Kobe is located near the JR Freight railway terminal which connects to all major cities in Japan within 48 hours. Osaka Osaka has the largest ferry terminal in Japan handling an annual 56.2 million tons in domestic cargo. Tokyo Tokyo is Japan’s largest domestic and international hub for rail, ground and air transportation. It has the largest metropolitan eco- nomy in the world. Major industries: 7, 9, 10, 20. 15. Yokohama Yokohama has one of the major harbours in the Asia-Pacific region and the airport is recognised as the number one international port in Japan. Incheon Incheon is the hub of the Northeast Asian region and is ranked in the top 20 harbours of the world.
