    The Purse of Gold

A beggar found a leather purse that someone had dropped in a market place. Opening it,he discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold. Then he heard a merchant shouted, "Areward! A reward to the one who find my leather purse!"

Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to the merchantsaying, "Here is your purse. Will you keep your word to give a reward now?"

"Reward?" scoffed the merchant greedily counting the amount of gold. "The purse Idropped had 200 pieces of gold in it. You've already stolen more than the reward I'll giveto you.! Go away or I'll tell you to the police."

"I'm an honest man," said the beggar defiantly. "Let's take this matter to the court!" In thecourt, the judge patiently listened to both sides of the story and said, "I believe you both.Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of

gold. Well, that's a considerable cost. But the purse the beggar found had only 100 piecesof gold. Therefore, it couldn't be the one you lost."

And, with that, the judge gave the purse and all the golds to the beggar.

Let me remind you my experience during an earthquake last week. When the earthquakehappened, I was on my car. I was driving home from my vocation to Bali.Suddenly my car lunched to one side, to the left. I thought I got flat tire. I did not knowthat it was an earthquake. I knew it was an earthquake when I saw some telephone andelectricity poles falling down to the ground, like matchsticks.

Then I saw a lot of rocks tumbling across the road. I was trapped by the rock. Even Icould not move my car at all. There were rocks everywhere. There was nothing I coulddo but left the car and walked along way to my house, in the town. When I reached my town, I was so surprised that there was almost nothing left. Theearthquake made a lot of damage to my town. Although nothing was left, I thanked Godthat nobody was seriously injured.

A princess was standing outside the gate. The rain ran down over her hair and clothes andinto her shoes. She told the king that she was a real princess, and he asked her to comeinside.

Well, said the old queen. Well soon find out if that is true. She went into the guest

bedroom and took the mattress and blanket of the bed. Then she put a little green pea onthe bed. She put twenty mattress on top of the pea, and then twenty mattress on top of thepea, and then twenty blankets on top of the mattress. This was where the princess wasgoing to spend the night.

The next morning the queen asked the princess how she had slept.

oh, it was terrible answered the princess. didnt close my eyes all night. I dont knowwhat was in my bed, but I lay on something hard, and now I am black and blue all over. Itwas quite a terrible night.

Now, the king, the queen and the prince could be sure that this was a real princess shehad felt the little pea trough twenty mattresses and twenty blankets. Only a real princesswill be able to do that.

So the prince married the princess and the pea was put in a museum for everyone to see, unless someone has taken it, its still there today

    Father Eyes

Once in a city, there was a skinny young boy who loved football very much. Practiceafter practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the otherboys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the benchand hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them hada very special relationship.

Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the standscheering. He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the classwhen he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him but also made itvery clear that he did not have to play football if he didn't want to. But the young manloved football and decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at everypractice, and perhaps he'd get to play when he became a senior.

All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a bench-warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words ofencouragement for him.

When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a"walk-on." Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coachadmitted that he kept him on the roster because he always puts his heart and soul to everypractice, and at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit and hustle theybadly needed.

The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearestphone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season ticketsfor all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during hisfour years at college, but he never got to play in a game.

It was the end of his senior football season, and as he trotted onto the practice fieldshortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young manread the telegram and he became deathly silent.

Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Is it all right if

I miss practice today?" The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, "Takethe rest of the week off, son. And don't even plan to come back to the game on Saturday."

Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the teamwas ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room andput on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players wereastounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. "Coach, please let me play. I'vejust got to play today," said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. Therewas no way he wanted is worst player in this close playoff game.

But the young man persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. "Allright," he said. "You can go in." Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in thestands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before wasdoing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed, blocked, and tackled like a star.

His team began to triumph. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The fans brokeloose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders. Such cheering you never heard.

Finally, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. Thecoach came to him and said, "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what gotinto you? How did you do it?"

He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced asmile, "Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, andI wanted to show him I could do it!".

    The Three Feathers

There was once upon a time a king who had three sons, of whom two were clever andwise, but the third did not speak much, and was simple, and was called the simpleton.

When the king had become old and weak, and was thinking of his end, he did not knowwhich of his sons should inherit the kingdom after him. Then he said to them, go forth, and he who brings me the most beautiful carpet shall be king after my death.

And that there should be no dispute amongst them, he took them outside his castle, blewthree feathers in the air, and said, you shall go as they fly. One feather flew to the east, the other to the west, but the third flew straight up and did not fly far, but soon fell to theground.

And now one brother went to the right, and the other to the left, and they mockedsimpleton, who was forced to stay where the third feather had fallen. He sat down and

was sad. Then all at once he saw that there was a trap-door close by the feather. He raisedit up, found some steps, and went down them. Then he came to another door, knocked atit, and heard somebody inside calling - little green waiting-maid, waiting-maid with thelimping leg, little dog of the limping leg, hop hither and thither, and quickly see who iswithout.

The door opened, and he saw a great, fat toad sitting, and round about her a crowd oflittle toads. The fat toad asked what he wanted. He answered, I should like to have theprettiest and finest carpet in the world. Then she called a young one and said - little greenwaiting-maid, waiting-maid with the limping leg, little dog of the limping leg, hop hitherand thither, and bring me the great box.

The young toad brought the box, and the fat toad opened it, and gave simpleton a carpetout of it, so beautiful and so fine, that on the earth above, none could have been wovenlike it. Then he thanked her, and climbed out again.

The two others, however, had looked on their youngest brother as so stupid that theybelieved he would find and bring nothing at all. Why should we give ourselves a greatdeal of trouble searching, said they, and got some coarse handkerchiefs from the firstshepherds' wives whom they met, and carried them home to the king.

At the same time simpleton also came back, and brought his beautiful carpet, and whenthe king saw it he was astonished, and said, if justice be done, the kingdom belongs to theyoungest. But the two others let their father have no peace, and said that it wasimpossible that simpleton, who in everything lacked understanding, should be king, and entreated him to make a new agreement with them.

Then the father said, he who brings me the most beautiful ring shall inherit the kingdom, and led the three brothers out, and blew into the air three feathers, which they were to

follow. Those of the two eldest again went east and west, and simpleton's feather flewstraight up, and fell down near the door into the earth.

Then he went down again to the fat toad, and told her that he wanted the most beautifulring. She at once ordered her big box to be brought, and gave him a ring out of it, which

sparkled with jewels, and was so beautiful that no goldsmith on earth would have beenable to make it.

The two eldest laughed at simpleton for going to seek a golden ring. They gavethemselves no trouble, but knocked the nails out of an old carriage-ring, and took it to theking, but when simpleton produced his golden ring, his father again said, the kingdombelongs to him. The two eldest did not cease from tormenting the king until he made athird condition, and declared that the one who brought the mostbeautiful woman home, should have the kingdom. He again blew the three feathers intothe air, and they flew as before.

Then simpleton without more ado went down to the fat toad, and said, I am to take homethe most beautiful woman. Oh, answered the toad, the most beautiful woman. She is notat hand at the moment, but still you shall have her. She gave him a yellow turnip whichhad been hollowed out, to which six mice were harnessed. Then simpleton said quitemournfully, what am I to do with that. The toad answered, just put one of my little toads into it. Then he seized one at random out of the circle, andput her into the yellow coach, but hardly was she seated inside it than she turned into awonderfully beautiful maiden, and the turnip into a coach, and the six mice into horses. So he kissed her, and drove off quickly with the horses, andtook her to the king.

His brothers, who came afterwards, had given themselves no trouble at all looking forbeautiful girls, but had brought with them the first peasant women they chanced to meet. When the king saw them he said, after my death the kingdom belongs to my youngestson. But the two eldest deafened the king's ears afresh with their clamor, we cannotconsent to simpleton's being king, and demanded that the one whose wife could leapthrough a ring which hung in the centre of the hall should have the preference. Theythought, the peasant women can do that easily, they are strong enough, but the delicatemaiden will jump herself to death.

The aged king agreed likewise to this. Then the two peasant women jumped, and jumpedthrough the ring, but were so clumsy that they fell, and their coarse arms and legs brokein two. And then the pretty maiden whom simpleton had brought with him, sprang, andsprang through as lightly as a deer, and all opposition had to cease. So he received thecrown, and has ruled wisely for a length of time.

Notes on Generic Structure of Narrative Text

Orientation: it means to introduce the participants or the characters of the story with the

time and place set. Orientation actually exists in every text type though it has differentterm. In this story, the first paragraph is clearly seen to introduce the participants of theCinderella Story. They were Cinderella her self as the main character of the story, herstep mother which treated Cinderella badly, and her steps sister which supported hermother to make Cinderella was treated very badly. Cinderella was introduced as a hero in

this story. She struggled against the bad treatment from her step mother and sisters.Complication: it is such the crisis of the story. If there is not the crisis, the story is not anarrative text. In a long story, the complication appears in several situations. It means thatsome time there is more then one complication. In this Cinderella story, we can seeclearly that there are Major Complication and Minor Complication. The second paragraph is the major complication of this Cinderella story. Cinderella gotbad treatment from her stepmother. It is the bad crisis which drives into several minorcomplications which Cinderella has to overcome.Resolution: it is the final series of the events which happen in the story. The resolutioncan be good or bad. The point is that it has been accomplished by the characters. Likecomplication, there are Major Resolution and Minor Resolution.

In the last paragraph, it is said that finally Cinderella lived happily. It is the happyresolution of the bad treatment.
