COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of teaching listening and speaking skill.

2. Interpret the syllabus and select listening and speaking skills.

3. Select, create and evaluate materials for developing listening and speaking skills

4. Plan and teach lessons to develop listening and speaking skills

5. Use appropriate types of assessment/feedback in the teaching of listening and speaking to children

6. Give feedback on microteaching

This project evaluates learning outcomes : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

COURSEWORK OBJECTIVES:

To enable students to:1. read critically and select appropriate information from various sources on the teaching

and assessing of listening and speaking skills in the primary ESL classroom;

2. use computer skills to design an appropriate graphic organiser to present information;

3. select a topic in the KSSR/KBSR English Language Syllabus;

4. select and adapt suitable instructional materials for teaching and learning of listening and speaking skills;

5. write lesson plans according to the curriculum specifications of the English Language primary school syllabus;

6. conduct a lesson on teaching of listening and speaking skills with appropriate skills, strategies and techniques.

7. observe and assess macro/micro teaching sessions and provide constructive feedback based on the criteria given.

8. reflect critically on the process of the coursework; and

9. collaborate effectively with peers.

TASK 1 (Sourcing and presenting information- 25%) – Individual work

a. Source information on listening and speaking skills (definition, aims, purposes, models of teaching listening and speaking skills, approaches to teach listening and speaking skills, techniques of assessing listening and speaking skills, samples of activities in teaching listening and speaking skills, etc.); lesson planning and selection of teaching/learning resources for teaching listening and speaking skills from books, magazines, journals and the Internet.

b. Read and select six articles (on different topics) from a variety of sources. (Provide

evidence of reading by highlighting, underlining etc. of articles. Submit these articles.)

c. Use your computer skills to present the information in the form of short notes in suitable graphic organiser(s).

TASK 2 (Lesson plan, teaching / learning resources – 25%)

a. In groups of 3/4, select a topic in the KSSR /KBSR English Language Curriculum Specifications. Prepare a 60-minute lesson (15%) and the relevant teaching / learning resources for the lesson (10%) for a mixed ability class (Individual) to teach listening and speaking skills with integration of other language skills, content, grammar and educational emphases.

b. In your group, discuss and select one lesson plan. Adopt or adapt the lesson plan selected, which you will use for macroteaching (include the teaching-learning resources). (Groupwork- to be used for microteaching in task 4)

TASK 3 (Portfolio and teacher attributes – 20%) – Individual

a. Compile and submit your portfolio, which consists of the following: – (15%)1. Task Sheets2. Collaboration forms3. Copies of six selected articles or more4. Graphic organisers5. Own lesson plan and teaching / learning resources, e.g. work sheet/s for different levels,

teaching aids, etc. (individual)6. Revised lesson plan (group) -optional7. Peer’s and lecturers’ (assessors’) macro/micro teaching feedback forms

8. Articles, activities, lesson plans, samples of tests, exercises, tasks, materials etc. related to the assignment and during independent self learning (ISL).

b. Students Attributes – (5%)

TASK 4 (Implementation of lesson plan - 15%) – Groupwork

a. Carry out macro/micro-teaching of the group’s selected and revised lesson plan (10%). b. Observe, assess and provide feedback on other group’s/peer’s microteaching (5%).

TASK 5 (Reflection of microteaching and reflection of the whole process – 15%) – individual work

a. Write a reflection of your microteaching experience in about 300 words (5%) a. Write a critical reflection in about 300 - 400 words on the processes that you have gone

through from the beginning until the end of the coursework (10%).

TOTAL MARKS: 100%

1. This coursework requires you to work individually and collaboratively. Each group should comprise 3/4 students only.

2. You are advised to discuss your work regularly with your supervisor to ensure targets are met.

4. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated. References must be acknowledged (APA System) in articles selected. All borrowed ideas must have proper citations.

5. Please adhere to the deadlines of each stage. Late submission will be penalised.
