UNDERGRADUATE MINOR IN LANGUAGES

CONTACT DETAILS Deputy Dean (Academic), Language Academy, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ℡ 07-5531867

SYNOPSIS Language, simply defined, is a human system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols that enables humans to interact and share their thoughts with others. In the present era of a borderless and globalised world, we are increasingly coming into contact with people who do not speak our language. Thus, knowing more than one language can open up a whole new culture, and our lives can take on a new dimension. It has also been said that knowing another language can contribute to a stronger personality. We can also gain an advantage for ourselves in our professional life by being able to communicate with people in their language or simply by seeing the world from their perspective. This will set us apart and earn us immediate respect and credibility in our personal and professional interactions with others. The minor in Languages provides students in the engineering, technology, science and other majors with knowledge of English and at least one other language. It also introduces students to some of the cultural practices of speakers of the languages.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Students must be at least in their fourth semester of study and have completed and passed the first English Language course, ULAB1112/ UHB1412

SYNOPSIS Creative and Innovative Design is an area which is gaining popularity and wide acceptance due to its mass appeal and manifestation in almost any tangible products that we can lay our fingers on. Creativity is often associated with being different, thinking laterally and making new connections. Innovation equals to creativity plus (successful) implementation while design is the process by which information is transformed into a tangible outcome. Putting the three together, one can expectedly presume that the culmination will be the materialization or creation of products with potentially high returns, global competitiveness and sustainability which is extremely ideal as far as commercialisation is concerned.

It is the the main motivation of this minor programme to promote and foster creativity and innovation in design via a series of related courses as a value-added feature package for a specific academic programme in UTM that can in turn provides the extra boost and impetus for future career path and development of the students. The content of these courses should preferably contain creative and innovative elements in the form of modules or mini-projects which are fundamentally design-based incorporated into the syllabus.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The minor programme is open to all UTM undergraduates. The students must be at least in the fifth semester to enroll in the programme. Students from other faculties can have up to a maximum of 6 credits exemption for any design-based or equivalent courses that they have undertaken in their respective mainstream programmes subject to approval by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM).
