    Together We Bought an

    ESCALADE...reaching the age of

puberty is not a conditionfor zakah. Zakah is due even

on an infant's money, if itpasses the nisaab.

...a woman can give zakah toher husband, children or parents, but

a man cannot give zakah to these peoplebecause it is a man's responsibility to

    provide for them....a pregnant woman

is to fast unless there is areal threat to her or the

    baby....the decision of the

    moon-sighting rests with

the leader of the community, and the community's responsi-bility is only to follow the

    leader in this case.

...a child is to beencouraged to fast at

age 7 and hit for not fast-ing at the age of 10,

    just like forsalah.

...that learningabout zakah is fard onevery Muslim, because

    it affects every

    Muslim.zakah money is not your

money; it belongs to the poor and needy. If you don't pay zakah, you are with-

    holding their wealth!

that for afard fast, an inten-tion is required before

    fajr, or there is nofast.

    the wisdomfor fasting is wor-

shipping Allah! ihram andintention must be

made before passing themeeqat. Coming on an

airplane means that ihramand intention are done

    on the plane.

Have you ever walked into an Islamic schooland seen no trace of Islam? Or have you everheard rumors that one school in your city is a"Muslim - by name" school and another is

"Islam - without academics" school? You prob-ably have. At the school where I teach,Al-Hijra School in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, westrive to provide both Islam and academics andAlMaghrib helps us accomplish that.

From my six years at the school, a mathteacher by nature but mostly as a Grade 5homeroom teacher and later a vice principal, there is no doubt that we, among many otherIslamic schools work tirelessly to achieveup-and-above national standardized test scoresand compete in national extra-curricular aca-demic contests but we cannot leave our stu-dents to the barebones of math and science,

can we? As a teacher, mentor, social worker,

counselor, caregiver, sister all at the sametime, being a good role model who is aninformed Muslim is crucial.

    WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR PROGR

AM?Al-Hijra School set up a professional develop-ment program that supports and funds teach-ing staff to attend academic and Islamic cours-es including AlMaghrib classes, which is allo-cated from the professional developmentbudget each year. After completing AlMaghribclasses, teachers educate the rest of the staffduring professional development days so theentire school can benefit. Teachers often takethis information and implement it eitherdirectly or indirectly into their classroomsdepending on where the information applies.AlMaghrib has proved to be a strong sourcefor Islamic school teachers and administrators.

S?There are many effective teaching techniquesthat a teacher can learn from an AlMaghribclass and use in the classroom. I have had theopportunity of taking five AlMaghrib classesin Windsor and Michigan so far and havelearned immensely fromeach one. I gainedsomething that in turncan be applied to myrole as a teacher. In 'Conquest - Historyof the Khulafaa', I

learned the life of theprophet (saw) and thekhalifas. Namely, Ilearned that great lead-ers don't shun criti-cism; they look at itobjectively and seewhat they can do toimprove the situation. I have been able toapply this with students, parents, staff andcommunity, spending more time with themto gain their feedback. Also, I have learnedhow to train my students and mould theminto leaders by striving to be optimistic inmotivating them and asking advice from pro-

fessional development individuals. But, thegreatest moral from this course is to learnthe history of Islam and take lessons from it.Alhamdu lillah, in the next class I took,'Islam Invulnerable - The Making of theModern Muslim World', I was able to expandmy knowledge of Muslim history and tooklessons from it. This proved to be particular-ly beneficial since I teach ancient civilizationsto my grade 5 students, Muslim civilizationbeing one of them. The third class I attended, 'Code of Scholars- Usool Al-Fiqh', was completely differentfrom the first two. But, it made me greatlyappreciate scholars and what they know.

I also began to see the deep need for Islamicschool teachers to be equipped with correctIslamic knowledge; otherwise we can really begiving our students the wrong information. In 'Route 114 - Quranic Sciences', I was ableto integrate Quranic principles into socialstudies, and language arts.

OL?Lastly, in 'RIZQManagement - Fiqh ofWorship IV ~ Zakah,

Siyam, Hajj' I gainedmore knowledge of hajjand fasting principles,so I was betterequipped to deal withthem when they cameup during the school

year. In particular, Ipresented the obligations of hajj and alongwith the Imam of the school and mosque, pre-sented the journey and steps of hajj to the restof the staff. Currently, as a staff and Islamicdepartment, we are preparing to present aschool hajj tour for all students in celebrationof Eid Al-Adha. Some of our parents are

helping to build the ka'aba and other struc-tures we need for this project.

In essence, I have benefited greatly fromAlMaghrib Institute, not only in the founda-tional principles of Islam, but also in ways thatI can directly apply what I learned into mypersonal and professional life. I urge allIslamic school staff members to attend

I guess you can say I was a bit skeptical about taking the fasting portion of RIZQmanagement. After fasting for so many years, is there really that much more to know?Subhan Allah there is.

Someone might think, "Oh you probably just learned about some rules", but no, youlearn about fasting through the light of your heart. This class made you wish Ramadancould start all over again. The whole misconception about fasting to see what it 'feels'like to be poor disappears.

Before fasting one must make the intention to do so; however it seems as though aperson's intention usually runs a little like this, "I'm not going be able to work todaybecause fasting will make me tired". If you fast properly however, by the half waypoint, your body should be full of energy! Ironically, one of the days while learningabout fasting, many of us who came back from our lunch break were actually moretired and lazy after eating!

You know, I read people's testimonials about the classes offered and I keep readinghow amazing each one is.After taking this class, which was also my first, I now under-stand what is meant by amazing.

Hajj is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so you don't want to waste your energy and resources only to lose out in the actual worship. To helpget the most out of Hajj, here are some insider tips for prospective Hajjis.

    GO WITH AN ORG

ANIZED GROUP:Being around experienced people can save you time and money.

HOLD ON TIGHT TO THE THREE BALLOONS:

Patience: Practice to cope tolerantly with stressful situations, annoying people and pet-peeves.Thankfulness: Focus on the positive aspects. Be thankful that Allah has awarded you with theblessing of Islam and ability to perform hajj.

    Laughing-Until-Milk-Comes-Out-Of-Your-Nose: Keep your sense-of-humor ALIVE!

    GET FI

T A LIL BIT:Try your best to maintain good health before going to Hajj. Exercise and eat a well-balanceddiet.The better you prepare your body, the more able you are to withstand changes.

Hajj involves a lot of walking, so practice brisk and long walks at least a month ahead. For the eye, keep allergy drops. Instead of contact lenses, wear glasses (with plastic frame) since

the probability of breaking glasses is a bit high.

    MONE

    Y M

    AT

TERS:Bring extra money, in case you lose your baggage. Don't carry passports and a large sum of money aroundwhile performing Hajj.

Many shops and markets near the masjid don't accept credit cards. You're going to Mecca for the worship of Allah, not for shopping.Take Zamzam water and miswak for the family membersif you need gifts.

    H

    A

JJ:The 8th of Dhul Hijjah is the day of preparation, so get a good rest. The following days are going to be exhaustive.

Don't force yourself to kiss the black stone during peak hours, otherwise you may get killed.During sa'e, beware of water spills near zamzam water tanks because you may slip and fall.

Carry a portable radio to listen to khutbahAvoid stoning at Jamarat during peak hours. You can still perform this ritual within the t ime-period once the crowd has gone thin.

On the day of Arafah, if you need rest, camp your sleeping bag between two buses in the parking lot.If you are the only person performing a rukun of hajj, then you are probably doing something wrong.

Don't be afraid of death. Mecca and Medina are the coolest places to die!

Don't Wreck Your Hajj byPopping YourBalloons!

Although many of us will not be able to experience this touching act of worship this year, Iask Allah to grant us all with it in the near future along with our beloved. May Allah help us

all and may we come back from our hajj lifted by our patience and thankfulness balloons.

0+Hajj then ends with the farewell

    Build yourassets before your liabilities.

If everybody followed my opinion there would be no difference of opinion. It is none your business; leave it for theimams.

    Race to do good deeds before a fitnah comes upon you!It's not fasting that's difficult;

it's your habits outside of Ramadan that are making it difficult.

Command the good, forbid the evil.Don't work harder, worksmarter.

Don't try tojudge; it just brings pain to you.Just because the chicken is halal, doesn't mean it tastes good.

Allah wants us to increase our iman, not decrease our money.Money is fake!

    Islam isn't about being likemonks!

    Muslims' goal:Wreck your credit!

Islam has the best method. It just takes the world much longer to f igure it out.University:manufacturerof employees

    Zakat:TRIPLE win situation!

The problem isn't money. The real problem lies within the heart of the people. You can't base your deen on chatter alone.Ask people ofknowledge if you don't know.
