AbstrakThere are five causative verbs in English namely; get, want, make, have andlet. However, in this study, the writer only limit to discuss about causative “get” and“have”.This study is purposed to answer two questions stated on the statement of theproblems. The first is. How far have the XII grade students of the SMU 7 Semarangmastered the causative “Get and Have”? and the second is what kinds of difficultiesdo the students have in mastering the causative “Get and Have?To answer the questions stated on the statement of the problems, the writerconducted library study to get some relevant theories to develop the comprehensionof the causative “get” and “have” and conducted survey research to collect the data. From the sample, the writer used a test and questionnaire as the instrument in thisstudy. The test was conducted and the questionnaire was distributed at SMU 7Semarang on (day, date, year) and followed by 37 students, who come from the thirdgrade students of SMU 7 Semarang but only 20 students were chosen randomly as thesample. The writer used an evaluation system to compare the achievement standard ofa student and his class. From the analyzed data, the writer found that two studentsgot A, three students got B, ten students got C, five students got D and nobody got E.So based on the data, the writer concludes that the third grade students of SMU 7Semarang have mastered the causative “Get” and “Have”. The writer also found thatthe students have difficulties in (1) putting the major constituent in the wrong order(2) making ungrammatical sentences (3) the meaning of “get” and “have” ascausative verbs and (4) the causative rules. These difficulties may be caused bycarelessness and previous knowledge of the students. Finally, the writer suggested that there are more investigation of causative“have” and “get” to see the errors occured in learning English and the Englishteachers should improve their teaching learning strategy to measure the mastery oftheir students about causative “have” and “get”.
