AbstrakThe main objective of this study is to know how effective the use ofcontextual teaching learning technique in teaching writing descriptive texts is. Sothis final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using CTL(Contextual Teaching Learning) technique in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that the students often getdifficulties in describing something. In order to achieve the objective of the study, I designed an actionresearch. The population of this study was the VII year students of SMP Negeri 1Doplang. The number of the subjects of this study was 40 students. During theresearch, the students becoming the subjects were taught by using CTL techniquein teaching writing descriptive texts. There were two cycles in this actionresearch. Each cycle consisted of four phases. Before giving treatments in thosetwo cycles, the students were given pre-test and pre-questionnaire. After eachtreatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were givenpost-test and post-questionnaire. Before the tests were used, they were tried out to60 students. Each test was tried out to 20 students. The main purpose ofconducting it was to find out the validity and the reliability of the test asinstrument. The result of this research shows that the students’ ability in writingdescriptive texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It canbe seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was50.5, the mean score for test 1 was 61.55, and the mean score for test 2 was66.285, while the mean score for the post-test was 71.175. It is clear that afterContextual Teaching Learning technique was applied in each treatment, the meanof each test improves and gets better, and better. In line with the result, I also suggest that English teachers should be ableto create their own way to be more creative and to motivate their students in orderto be more interested in English. The use of CTL (Contextual Teaching Learning)technique is one of the ways to achieve the goal. However, teacher must be wiseto choose which component of CTL is most appropriate to a certain material givento the students.
