safety. In addition, the visit also promoted UMP Halal unit in Japan and created more collabora-tive opportunities between UMP, JAKIM and Halal agencies in Japan such as MPJA in the future. In general, MPJA is chaired by Mr. Akmal Abu Has-san, as Managing Director. This visiting program was initiated by the effort by Dr. Azizan Ramli from FKKSA, which linked between UMP and MPJA.

A Halal Audit monitoring visit was held in the Land Of The Rising Sun from 29th of January to 31st of January 2018 at two food pro-cessing facilities. Dr. Farhan Mohd Said, the staff of the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering (FKKSA) Universiti Ma-laysia Pahang (UMP) has participated in the visit together with the auditors from Muslim Professional Japan Association (MPJA). During the visit, first, the Audit team was brought to an enzyme drink processing plant, Dainichi Seiyaku Co. Ltd. that is located in Gifu, the capital of Central Japan. While, the second venue was in a slaughter house, Zenkai Meat Corporation that is located in Hitoyoshi, Kuma-moto, at Kyushu island. The visit was led by Dr. Farhan Mohd Said, FKKSA, UMP as the Tech-nical Fatwa commission member, together with the MPJA auditors. The Audit monitoring agen-da went well, flourished with good discussions and exchanges of information on the Halal

FKKSA Contributes Expertise in the Development of

Halal Products in Japan concept between MPJA auditors, companies and representatives of the Fatwa commission member. The main objective of the visit was to monitor the Halal auditing process conducted by the MPJA in Japan. In addition, this visit was also intended to examine some Halal-related technical issues to be used as a reference in the development of UMP Halal unit (co-operation of FKKSA, PBMSK and UMPH staff). The fruitful results of the visit have provided exposure on the awareness of non-Muslims in non-Muslim country on the importance of the Halal concept. 10 Gold Medals at CITREX 2018

The Creation, Innovation, Technoloy & Research Exposition (Citrex 2018) was held at Sport Complex UMP Gambang campus on 15th -16th

March 2018. FKKSA lecturers won 10 gold medals from the event. They were Dr. Sumaiya Zainal Abidin@ Murad (Extraction of rare earth element using synergist extractant immobilised resins (SEIR) ), Assoc. silver and 2 bronze medals from CITREX.

1 Gold, 2 Silver Medals at Seoul

The 13th annual of Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF 2017) started on 30 November 2017 and last-

ed for four days closing on 3 December. The event has brought 1 gold medal and 2 silver medals to FKKSA team. Gold medal was received by Prof. Dr. Hayder A. Abdulbari with research on novel fabrica-tion method of medical pre-testing microfluids blood

flow chip. Recipients for silver medals were Dr. Noormazlinah Ahmad and (Oligowell: Inulin complex from two steps production by using agricultural deso-lation) Mr. Najib Razali (G-Treat: smart system for

water sustainability).

2 Gold & 2 Silver Medals at MTE’18

Malaysia Technology Expo 2018 (MTE’18) was held at Putra Wolrd Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur on 22th to 24th February 2018. 2 gold medals were received by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arun Gupta (Novel formulation

of biodegradable plastic using Keratin protein from waste chicken feathers) and Prof. Dr. Abdurahman Hamid Nour (New green co-surfactant of low cost and high performance for enhanced oil recovery (EOR)). Prof. Dr. Arun Gupta also received the Best Award (Special Award) at the event. Two silver medals were contributed by Assoc. Prof.

Dr. Maksudur Rahman Khan (Simultaneous biopolymer synthesis and power generation in bioelectrochemical system) and Assoc. Prof. Dr.

Fatmawati Adam (Carra caps: Nanocellulose formulated).

5 Gold Medals at ITEX 2018

On 10-12th May 2018 ITEX’18 was held in Kuala Lum-pur Convention Centre. FKKSA’s team won 5 gold med-als (Dr. Jun Haslinda Sharifuddin and Dr. Ida Amalina Ahamad Nordin, Dr.Sumaiya Zainal Abidin @ Murad, A.P. Dr. Arun Gupta, A.P. Dr. Md. Cendekia Bitara is an annual awards ceremony that was created by UMP in 2009 to recognize excellence among staff. On 6th April 2018, the event was held at

INDUSTRIAL ENGAGEMENT

23rd February 2018 – A delegation of senior officials from BASF PETRONAS Chemicals have paid a courtesy visit to the

Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering (FKKSA), Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Professor Dr. Jamil Is-mail, the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Industry Partnership & Community Relation Department, together with Professor Zulkafli Hassan, Dean of FKKSA were present to receive the

delegates. This meeting was scheduled in order to initiate and to explore a collaborative framework between UMP and BASF PETRONAS Chemicals. During the meeting, the possibility of student internship, as well as staff placement were mooted. Both parties have agreed to look into this matter again. The

next itinerary was a visit to FKKSA Lab, followed by visiting CARIFF Lab. During the closing meeting, BASF PETRONAS Chemicals has expressed their readiness to work closer with UMP for mutual benefits. A subsequent visit is in the pipeline.

Industry Involvement In

Undergraduate Research Project

A final presentation of Undergraduate Research Project (URP) by students was held on 31st of May 2018 at

Block X, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Gambang. Panels from various industries were invited to evaluate the stu-dents’ presentation and share their industrial experiences and expertise with FKKSA students.

The panels were En. Rajesh Xavier from FPG Oleochemi-cals, En. Ahmad Khairulddin Bin Mat Ail from Toray BASF, En. Roslan bin Shafie from Eco Palm Paper, Pn. Norazihan Zulkifli from Lynas, Pn. Siti Zubaidah Binti Kamarudin from Polyplastic Asia Pacific, En. Hasril Azuan

A final project presentation of Process and Plant Design by final year students was held on 23rd May 2018 at Block W, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Gam-bang. Academic Delegation Visit from Omdurman Islamic University,

Sudan to FKKSA

Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources

Engineering (FKKSA) has received an

academic delegation visit from Omdurman

Islamic University (OIU), Sudan from 18 to

25 May 2018. The objective of the visit was

to initiate opportunity to collaborate with

UMP particularly, FKKSA through research

and postgraduate studies. The visit was led

by Dr. Salah Ahamed Mohamedali

Abdallah, Head of Department of Faculty of

Science and Technology along with 4 faculty

members and 47 final year-biotechnology

students. The delegates were welcomed by

Professor Zulkafli Bin Hassan, Dean of

FKKSA, and Professor Dr. Abdurahman

Hamid Nour, Delegate Coordinator, as well

as FKKSA faculty members.

To support the delegation’s visit, FKKSA

Student Exchange Program has arranged

some special lectures by academic experts,

including Malaysia’ Biotech industry as well

as awareness of Halal concept. Tours of

laboratories were also made to FKKSA

laboratory and Centre of Excellence for

Advanced Research in Fluid Flow

(CARIFF). The tours demonstrated the

facilities and services available to attract

the delegates for research collaboration

in the future. Undergraduate student

associations, CHEST, IChemE, AIChE and

EISS as well as postgraduate students

were also involved actively to support

them during their stay in ump.

Besides that, the delegates also enjoyed

tours at UMP main campus, fertigation

project at Kampung Pulau Rusa tour lead

by Dr. Nor Hanuni Binti Ramli@Said, as

well as historical sites in Pekan. The

delegates further had the opportunity to

get to know more about the

postgraduate programmes

offered at UMP presented

by Mr Arman Bin A. Rahim,

Manager of Marketing and

Intake division at Registry

Department. In the same

occasion, Mohamad Ragab,

one of Sudanese student who currently

doing his master study in UMP also had the

change to share his knowledge and

experience with the delegates.

“It is hoped that more students from OIU

will pursue their postgraduate’s studies in

UMP benefiting from this initiative”

Professor Dr. Abdurahman said happily

during the Iftar ceremony with FKKSA and

delegates. In turn, Dr. Salah thanked for

the hospitality they have received during

their stay. He also emphasized the

delegation's interest in further enhancing

relations with UMP.

Integrating Industrial Driven Competencies and Knowledge into the

Master Program of FKKSA

FKKSA in the process of developing two new master programs in coursework

mode. One of the program, Master of Science in Mining with Mineral Technolo-gy has just secured the provisional ac-creditation from Malaysia Qualification Agency and it is expected to be offered

in June 2018. The program aims to pro-duce graduates with the advanced knowledge in mining and mineral technol-ogy to ensure responsible and sustaina-ble mining and mineral processing. In

preparing an industry-centric curriculum, the committee members of the program conducted a round table discussion ses-sion with the panels from industries on 7-8th Feb 2018. These panels compose of

mining and mineral processing technical consultants and representatives from the agencies such as Mineral Research Centre

Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia, Institute of Quarrying Malay-

sia and Malaysian Chamber of Mines/Tin Industry (R&D) Board. All the subjects have been revised according to the ex-pectations indicated by the industrial panels. Some of these important subjects

include Mineral Processing Design, Ethics, Safety and Regulation in Mining, Materi-al Handling Reclamation and Rehabilita-tion, Environmental Impact Assessment and Mineral Economics and Market. On

another note, Master of Science in Pro-cess Plant Operation is anticipated to be offered by September 2018. This pro-gram is designed to serve as 1) a conver-sion programme for existing professionals

to migrate and serve the downstream oil and gas industry (e.g. from upstream oil and gas) and 2) a platform to upgrade

academic qualifications of those who desire to work in the industries involving process plant

operation. In collaboration with INSTEP, FKKSA UMP has integrated the industrial driv-en competencies and knowledge into the cur-riculum, particularly in the subject of Chemical Process Design and Equipment, Plant Integrity,

Maintenance and Troubleshooting, Process Safety Management, Process and Production Control and Plant Utilities. A round table dis-cussion session was organised on 3-4th Feb 2018 in TH Hotel and Convention Centre,

Kuala Terengganu. The committee members of MSc in Process Plant Operation have met up experts from INSTEP in the field of process design, control, safety, operation, mainte-nance and troubleshooting to refine the prac-

tical sessions in the curriculum and the timeta-

ble.

FKKSA’s Outbound Exchange students to Turkey, India and Indonesia

FKKSA has sent 13 students abroad to join the student exchange program at UMP’s

partner institutions in Turkey, India and Indonesia. “This program is aimed to gain valuable experience as student life and campus activities in overseas universities as well to learn about their different cul-

ture and language” said Associate Profes-sor Dr Fatmawati Adam, FKKSA Exchange Program Coordinator. Currently, the stu-dents are studying for one undergraduate

semester from January to June 2018.

In sharing her experience, Hana Shakirah said “The medium communication used for teaching purposes is fully English. Initially, we were having some difficulties to digest their accent but as the time passes, we can

understand their English accent better”. Hana Syakirah Bt Md Hadun is one of the exchange students to SRM Institute of Sci-ence and Technology, in Chennai India, along with 5 others, Mohammad Farizal

Bin Rahmat, Afkar Rabbani Hidayatullah Bin Hipeni, Nur Athira Hanani Bt Jailudin, Nurul Amirah Salihah Bt El-Arish and Pa-

vethra A/P Sivanesan.

In Turkey, 5 students are currently at-

tached at Karabuk University; Marzuki Bin Mawi, Khairul Asnawi Bin Abu Zaki, Ah-mad Nur Fikry Bin Zainuddin, Nurul Ain Syuhadah Bt Mohammad Khorri and Fateen Zulaiqha Bt Hamzah. In the uni-

versity, exchange students including Ka-zakhstan, Bangladesh and India, learn to

speak Turkish with lecturers and friends, in order to overcome language barrier, since

Turkish people cannot speak much English.

Besides studying, Asnawi and friends took this opportunity to visit several interesting

places in Turkey. “We had a trip to Bursa recently. Uludag in Bursa is famous as snowy mountain and we had so much fun playing with snow there” said Khairul

Asnawi happily.

In Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Indonesia, Siti Nurqurratulainie Bt Miskan and Norafizah Bt Jaini participat-ed in many activities organized by the ITS International Office. They had the oppor-

tunity to join ‘Campus and City Tour’ to-gether with international students to visit several historical places around Surabaya such as, Surabaya Museum, House of Sem-poerna, and Tugu Pahlawan. They also

joined ‘Adventurous Trip’ to Madura Island including Gili Genting Island, Pulau Sembi-lan Island and Gili Labak Island. “We were also invited to witness the opening ceremony performances of the Javanese

community at Cak Durasim Cultural Center. It was unforgettable moment for us” said

Norafizah proudly.

Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) has organized a 24th-

edition of prize presentation ceremony, held at InterContinental Hotel on 7th December 2017 to celebrate the recipients of prestigious Toray research grant. The Guest of Honour for this event was YB. Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, The Hon. Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. In the Science and Technology Research

Grant categories, a total of 553 applications were received. The Selection Committee chaired by Academician Tan Sri Prof. Emeritus Dr. Augustine Ong Soon Hock has selected 13 applications for the award of grant. Mr. Cheng Yoke Wang, a master student under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cheng Chin Kui from the Faculty of

Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering (FKKSA), Universiti Ma-laysia Pahang is one of the lucky few that was granted RM20,000 to carry out his study. Mr. Cheng is working on a project that utilizes palm oil mill effluent (POME) as a raw material for the production of synthesis gas (mixture of H2 and CO) via steam reforming method.

This new route could potentially transform the waste management

system of the existing palm oil mills in Malaysia.

24th MTSF Prize Presentation Ceremony

Impact Factor Publication Workshop

7 March 2018 – A team of academicians from FKKSA, Universiti Malaysia Pahang has conducted a one-day workshop that was

opened to interested postgraduate students registered with the faculty. The workshop was divided into two sessions, whereby the morning session saw a series of talks being delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cheng Chin Kui, Dr. Herma Dina Bt Setiabudi, Dr. Dai Viet N. Vo and Dr. Noormazlinah Bt Ahmad. Workshop

participants were exposed to the publication database, publica-tion matrices and also tips to write high-impact manuscripts. The afternoon session involves a creation of groups for hands-on coaching by the speakers. Overall, this workshop which was attended by 20 participants was a success. A similar workshop

has been planned for the near future to inculcate publication

culture among the staffs and postgraduate students.

FKKSA Journal (JCEIB & MyCM) Workshop

This program was organized by Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineer-

ing (FKKSA) with the invited speaker Prof Dr Ts Md Mustafizur Rahman (Editor in Chief of IJAME) and Assc Prof Dr Mazlina Abd Majid (Editor in Chief of IJSECS) to the FKKSA journal team (JCEIB and MyCM). As

arrived at 8.30 a.m, the workshop have been initiated by the short welcoming speech from Prof Zulkafli Hassan (FKKSA’s Dean) and introduction of the workshop by Prof Dr Abdurahman Hamid Nour (Editor in

Chief of JCEIB).

At 9.30 am the workshop was then continu-ing with the special sharing session by Prof Dr Ts Md. Mustafizur Rahman for improving the website and tips to obtain SCOPUS

indexing and impact factor journal. On this session the teams of both journals have the great vision on how to sustain our journal and being visible to global level. At 11.30, Assc Prof Dr Mazlina have been started her

talk on the online journal system in order to

strategize the journal management and to facilitate the indexing purpose. During this

session all the team members have been learned to key in all the information of editors, author and reviewer directly to the system and the basic ideas of the journal managements. Many questions have been

arised and was thoroughly answered and

discussed by the invited speakers.

After the sharing session by both invited speakers, the workshop continues with the strategic planning workshop (SPW) at

2.30pm. SPW was initiated by the prese-nation from Dr Noormazlinah Ahmad (Editor in Chief of JCEIB) for JCEIB achieve-ment during the Volume 1 and Volume 2 publications on 2017. JCEIB was organized

by 12 management team from FKKSA and 17 editorial board covering all continents in the world (US, UK, Spain, Taiwan, India, China, Iraq, Sudan, German, Canada and Malaysia). JCEIB was indexed by MyJounal

on February 2018 and will submitting the

documentations for DOAJ indexing application. Dr Noormazlinah was

dividing the team into three groups which are Group 1 (Technical team led by Prof Abdurahman), Group 2 (Index team led by Dr Noormazlinah) and Group 3 (MyCM team led by Dr

Mohd Yusri Yunus). The workshop has been successfully achieved the objec-tives which is to upgrade the journal website, submitting documents for indexing (DOAJ) and Scopus on 2019 and have a clear mission for a sustainable journal that have signifi-

cant impact factor in the future.

In conjunction with CITREx 2018, Technology Park of Malaysia (TPM), an agency under the purview of Ministry of Science, Tech-nology and innovation Malaysia has been invited by UMP to participate as an evaluation panel for the contested products. Following this invitation, on 8th February 2018 (Thursday), an officer from TPM, Mr. Mohammad Nadzim Bin Ahmad Azmi, has been requested by the TERAJU unit to hold a discussion cum mon-itoring session for 2 projects that have won the Superb Grant Series 1 2017, by Dr. Norashikin Bin Mat Zain for her product, Antigermz : Natural Antimicrobial Solution and Mr. Mohd Najib-Bin Razali for his product, G-Treat : Biocoagulant for Wastewater Treatment. During this meeting, a few improvements have been identified. Mr. Nadzim has expressed his satisfaction with the progress of both projects and is confident that the prod-

ucts will be marketable in foreseeable future.

There was an agreement with Prof. Okuda from RU to send his Student Tanaka Yusuke (Master Student) to UMP for the peri-od 20th November 2017- 2nd De-cember 2017 to have some training on water treatment experiment in Environmental Engineering Labs/

FKKSA.

Mr. Tanaka got good experience by getting river water from Sungai Be-lat/ Gambang, preparing Moringa oleifera seeds for water treatment

Direct Method: adding the raw grind-

ed seeds powder to the river water.

Oil extraction method: doing oil ex-traction, using soxhlet apparatus, and apply to water. Salt extraction meth-

od: doing oil extraction, salt ex-traction, filtration, and microfiltra-tion, then freeze drying to get the biocoagulant to Japan to use it for the river water there. Also, he learnt how to do grinding and sieving the powder using sieve shaker. The student visit the plan-tation site at KK2, and got soil samples and measure tree branches length to monitor the tree growth by adding the water treatment sludge to the trees using

Moringa.

At the end of his trip we managed to visit water treatment plant at Panching with my 2PSM students (Esther and Lyly) and RA (Abdulrahman). It was good ex-perience for all of them to see the

water treatment steps from A to Z.

and Dr. Bipro Dubey from United Kingdom

Royal Academy of Engineering and Newton Research Collaboration Programme under a Newton Research Collaboration Programme - NRCP1617/5/42: Sus-tainable Transformation of Food Waste for Energy

Generation and by Product Utilization.

Both researchers have delivered a seminar on food engineering prospect in UK, emphasizing particularly on their engagement with food industry in UK. Through this engagement, the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering has managed to secure more than £4.0 million in funding for the past 3 years. Ac-cording to Dr. Howarth, engagement with industry includes developing rich, long-term relationship with them by bringing together academic expertise and funding opportunities to address the challenges faced by the sector. Activities that are frequently being carried out include collaborative R&D, knowledge transfer programme, consultancy, student placements, guest lectures and also by aligning the academic

courses with industry development needs.

FKKSA has also invited both Dr. Howarth and Dr. Dubey to visit a local pineapple manufacturer, Pekan Pina Sdn. Bhd. This company involves in producing processed pineapple. Through this visit, both research-ers have identified areas of collaboration. Work is currently underway to establish a consortium that can link local food industry such as Pekan Pina with aca-demics in UMP and UK, as well as industry partners in UK. In addition, Dr. Dubey has also delivered several talks for the academic staffs of FKKSA pertaining to

securing research grants, and also supervising some postgraduate students during his attachment in Uni-versiti Malaysia Pahang. Hopefully, all these activi-ties can establish a long term working relationship between Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Sheffield Hallam University.

VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS FROM PINEAPPLE WASTES — Research

Collaboration with Pekan Pina Sdn. Bhd.

Pekan Pina Sdn. Bhd. is a compa-ny that deals with pineapple plantation. The plantation area is 200 acres with 50 acres is cur-rently planted with a special breed named “Royal Pineapple”. They sell the fresh pineapples and

also process them into pineapple cordial, jam, and vinegar. Initiat-ed by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Ziad bin Sulaiman, Pekan Pina Sdn. Bhd. agreed to have re-search collaborations with sever-al lecturers from Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering Cluster (BBEC), Faculty of Chemical & Natural Resources Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang. It was started with the placement of 12 students for industrial train-ing in Session 2017/2018 under various research projects. This research collaboration provided a good platform for the students to experience a real working environment, especially the agricultural sector. At the same time, the lecturers managed to exchange ideas and knowledge in supervising the research work to convert the wastes into many value-added products that can be utilised in many fields. There was also a research visit to Pekan Pina by Dr Bipro Nath Dubey and Dr Martin Howarth from Sheffield Hallam Uni-

Exhibition Coaching Session

10th January 2018 - In lieu of the upcoming annual exhibition event, Creation, Innovation, Technology and Research Exposition (CITREx 2018), a coaching session was arranged by Dr. Shalyda Binti MD Shaarani@Md Nawi to provide an idea-sharing plat-

form between experienced and junior researchers of FKKSA. The coaching session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Hayder Abdul Bari and Mr. Mohd Najib Bin Razali, and attended by junior FKKSA researchers as well as undergraduate students. The event took place at FKKSA Technical Meeting Room. During this session, both speakers had highlighted the judging criteria of exhibition and their proven-methods to create the wow factor. Through this activity, faculty is hoping that a lot more junior researchers can find their

footing in their respective research area and be able to promote their research products in a more effective way.

Dr.Ing. Mohamad Rizza Othman Invited to Deliver a Lecture at The

International Palm Oil Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC)

On 16th November 2016, Dr.-Ing. Mohamad Rizza Othman was invit-ed by Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) to give a lecture at the In-

ternational Palm Oil Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC) 2017 held in KLCC from 14 to 16 November 2017. PIPOC is one of the largest palm oil technical and trade congregations. The event attracted more than 7000 participants from over 40 countries. In the Oleo & Special-ty Chemicals session he gave a talk on the Application of Dividing

Wall Column (DWC) for Improved Fractionation of Oleochemical Products: From Modelling Work to Pilot Plant. The talk highlights the economic and environmental feasibility of applying DWC to fraction-ating oleochemical products. Operating cost can be saved up to 30% and capital cost more than 8%. In addition to that, Dr. Rizza also pre-

sent the development of a pilot plant at FKKSA laboratory. Such pilot plant is important for operability and controllability study thus could

accelerate the implementation in industrial scale.

There are several brands of cosmetic in the market. How-

ever, choice-making among these brands is usually a chal-

lenge for consumers who prefer halal cosmetics. Interest-

ingly, halal and other safe ingredients based natural tint-

ed lip balm has been developed by Dr. Norashikin Mat

Zain. This project, which started since 2015 was funded

through Pre-commercialisation grant provided by Universiti

Malaysia Pahang. The project has now been patented

based on a novel formulation of natural lip balm. In addi-

tion, the product has been produced in GMP laboratory

and has been approved with KKM certification. At the

moment, the product is in the process of getting Halal certi-

fication by JAKIM.

The 'Waste to Wealth' project lead by Dr Azilah Ajit with Mercu Re Solution Sdn Bhd is focusing to develop the renewable energy from waste materials. Mercu RE Solution Sdn. Bhd. (Mercu RE Solution) is a fully-owned Bumiputera company and in-corporated on 8th May 2015 with a paid-up capital of RM 400,000. Mercu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Faculty of Chemical & Natural Resources Engineering (FKKSA), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) to expand cooperation to produce renewable energy from waste materials. This project has had received RM 50,000 for the seed grant money to carry out the research related renewable enery from rubbish and the project has parked and coordinated under Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering Cluster FKKSA, UMP. After 2 years of progress, 11 projects have been identified and successfully achieved the KPI of the agreement. This research give a good opportunity for students to exposure the real situation in work-ing research environment, gain and provide a channel for sharing or exchange of ideas,knowledge and technologies between student and staff of industry. The final goal of project to provide technology to develop the renewable energy from waste materials, creating a clean and conducive environment and could potentially create employment opportunities for people in

Praveen won Maybank-ICMS Competition

Kuala Lumpur, 20 January – Undergradu-ates student from Faculty of Chemical &

Natural Resources Engineering, Praveen A/L Manogaran won the Maybank-ICMS: Decode. Disrupt. Define Competition. The competition is jointly organized by May-bank Banking Berhad and The Internation-

al Council of Malaysian Scholars and Asso-ciates (ICMS) and was held at Maybank

Tower, Kuala Lumpur recently.

The competition is open to students from higher learning institutions aiming to ex-

pose the younger generations to the chal-lenges in banking industry in the future. It is divided into two session; knowledge shar-ing with financial experts and competition concept based on simulation of case giv-

en.

Monash University. This winning entitles him to bring home a free entry to Golf Tournament organised by Maybank and a chance for meet and greet

session with the golfers.

In his last word, Parveen hopes that students nowadays to work hard, broaden their knowledge, develop and master new skills to ensure they become the graduates that fulfil all

the requirement sets by the industry.

with UMP Postgraduate Association has organized a Postgraduate Awards and Appreciation Dinner Night on 18th Novem-ber 2017 at Bukit Gambang Resort that was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancel-

lor of Academic and International, Profes-sor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Rosli bin Mohd Yunus. In her welcoming speech, the Dean of IPS, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hasnah binti Haron has lauded the achievement of UMP post-

graduate students, in particular the grad-uated students. Dato’ Hasnah also re-served her special praise for Ashwin Charles Benedict, a PhD student from FKKSA for emerging as the champion of

2017 Asia-Pacific 3MT competition and also emerged as the 1st runners up in the Falling Wall Labs that was held in Berlin in October 2017. During this event, IPS has also singled out Dr. Nor Shahirah Binti

Mohd Nasir from FKKSA as the recipient

sional bodies in Faculty of Chemi-

neering, IChemE Student Chapter,

opening session, Prof Zulkafli Has-

and expand their network. Consid-

ering the recent IR 4.0 educational

transformation, all students pro-

Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering and Faculty of Mechanical of UMP collaborated with ECO 24 Co. Ltd. Japan have creat-ed awareness and educated the young generations, local community and staff members on the danger of using asbes-tos to our health and environ-ment. Always striving to pro-vide good and better environ-ment to the community, UMP and ECO 24 Japan has recent-ly restored the garage rooftop materials at SK Indera Shahbandar, Pekan, Pahang by encapsulate the rooftop which contains asbestos with their cutting edge coating ma-terials as part of their corpo-rate social responsibility. This also aligned with UMP tagline “Communitizing Technology”

where students and staff mem-bers volunteerism hits inside the university as well by participat-ing in this project not only by coating the garage rooftop also providing English classes, Chess’s camp and mural paint-

ing. Dr Azizul Sofian, along with couple of his colleagues, has been thinking how they can use technology to preserve the old building with asbestos contain materials without demolished it. A visit from ECO 24 Japan to

UMP has inspired us to study their expertise and contribute back to community by providing assistance through assistive tech-nology. The students and staffs clearly care about the environ-ment where our young genera-tions especially in SK Indera Shahbandar will be affected by exposing to asbestos contain materials in long term period. Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering and Me-chanical Engineering coordi-nates this event to address the urgency of restoring the public building which contains asbestos with more environmental friend-ly method by coating the asbes-tos structure without demolished it. UMP and ECO 24 Japan know that a helping hand start in our backyard extends across the globe.

LAB SERVICES & FACILITIES

Laboratory of Faculty of Chemical & Natural Resources Engineering is a hub for teaching & learning as well as re-search and development for chemical engineering and other related field. The lab, which is operated by 16 technical staff is equipped with equipment related to the faculty. The laboratory offers variety of services especially those relat-ed to analytical equipment, technical services and fabrication. Among sought after testing and analysis equipment are, Thermo-Gravimetric Analyser, Gas Chromatography, Density Analyser and High Performance Liquid Chromatog-raphy. The services are provided to students and external parties. FKKSA’s lab do provide consultation involving its expertise and equipment. Multipurpose Extraction plant is one of the pilot plant that has been used for the consultation services involving spray drying and ex-traction. The lab also provides services for teaching and learning for a few modules namely Mass & Heat Transfer, Process Control and many more. One of

the niche area for the lab is fabrication, handled by Workshop unit. With exper-tise in the unit, it is able to cater needs from the staffs and students especially for research equipment. Other than fab-rication, the unit also provide mainte-nance services. FKKSA Lab is proud with Occupational Safety & Health practise in the lab. It is the eleventh year the lab is certified with OHSAS 18001:2007, MS 1722:2011 and ISO 14001:2004. 2018 is the third year that the lab has partici-pated in MSOSH OSH Award. For the previous two years, FKKSA has been awarded with Gold Class II Award. FKKSA will continuously enhance the quality of implementation of OSH in the lab to ensure safe and healthy work-place.
