Islamic Etiquette of Sleeping

Introduction:Islam has put utmost importance to the preservation of sanctity, nobility and integrity at home.It is because a man or woman spends most of his/her time in his/her home along with thefamily members and any untoward situation in the home will cause immense trouble andunhappiness for him/her. Allah said in the Qur'an:

They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) about the new moons. Say: These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pi grimage. !t is not A "#irr (piety$ righteousness$ et%.) that you enter thehouses from the ba%k but A "#irr (is the &ua ity of the one) who fears A ah. So enter houses through their

proper doors$ and fear A ah that you may be su%%essfu . (' )

Uhe Vrophet Hsaas also indicated to this reality when he said:

If anyone cast over at anyone's house without their permission, then it is permissible for them to gouge out his eyes (to deal him a heavy blow).

It is because someone is to feel comfort in his house or to ta e rest or to spend a very relatime there or to immerge in serious contemplation and any unwanted intrusion there may puthim s uarely in a very aw ward situation.Uhus the first responsibility a juslim does have toward his residence is:

A. Uo spend the time in his residence in Allah'sibadah especially when one will besolitary there, and in Allah's contemplation and ma ing his appeal to kim. Allahindicated to this reality when ke said:

In houses (mos#ues), which llah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to behonoured), in them &is ame is glori"ed in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings, ( ) en whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the*emembrance of llah (with heart and tongue), nor from performing s+ alat (I#amat+as+ alat), nor from giving the -a at. /hey fear a 0ay when hearts and eyeswill be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the 0ay of *esurrection). ( 1)/hat llah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add evenmore for them out of &is 2race. nd llah provides without measure to whom &ewills. ( 3) ( urah al+ oor)

O you who believe! 5nter not houses other than your own, until you have as ed permission and greeted those in them, that is better for you, in order that you may remember. O you who believe! Let your legal slaves and slave+girls, and those among you whohave not come to the age of puberty as your permission (before they come to your

presence) on three occasions8 before 9a:r (morning) prayer, and while you put o; your clothes for the noonday (rest), and after the 'Isha' (late+night) prayer. (/hese)three times are of privacy for you, other than these times there is no sin on you or on them to move about, attending (helping) you each other. /hus llah ma es clear

the yat (the ise. (?3) nd whenthe children among you come to puberty, then let them (also) as for permission, asthose senior to them (in age). /hus llah ma es clear &is yat (@ommandmentsand legal obligations) for you. nd llah is ll+7nowing, ll+>ise. (?%)

® ¦ne should avoid snea ing into the house, or entering into it suddenly without notice or notification or permission, lest he sees what he hates to put anyone in embarrassment or fear, especially when returning from a long absence:

but l+Airr (is the #uality of the one) who fears llah. o enter houses through their proper doors, and fear llah that you may be successful. (B3%)

¦ne should remember Allah in solitude and avoid all obscenities or unlawful activities.{ Avoid raising voices and noise and playing games in louder voices with the family

members which is disturbing to other family members and neighborsŠ Avoid raising the voice of radio or television, especially in times of rest or sleep

S Uo avoid hearing anything or seeing it as unworthy of wasting time in that by juslims:

private parts, especially when one switches clothes, and ta es bath and washing, and theobservance of decency, and eti uette during the sitting and sleeping, and closing eyesfrom the shortcomings of others:Imam ²hafii recited:
