    The 5S Process, or simply "5S", is a structured program tosystematically achieve total organization, cleanliness, andstandardization in the workplace. A well-organizedworkplace results in a safer, more efficient, and moreproductive operation. It boosts the morale of the workers,promoting a sense of pride in their work and ownership oftheir responsibilities.

    SEIRIThe first step of the "5S" process, Seiri, refers to the act ofthrowing away all unwanted, unnecessary, and unrelatedmaterials in the workplace. People involved in Seiri must not feel sorry about having to throw away things. The ideais to ensure that everything left in the workplace is relatedto work. Even the number of necessary items in theworkplace must be kept to its absolute minimum. Becauseof Seiri, simplification of tasks, effective use of space, andcareful purchase of items follow.

    SEITONSeiton, or orderliness, is all about efficiency. This stepconsists of putting everything in an assigned place so that it can be accessed or retrieved quickly, as well as returned inthat same place quickly. If everyone has quick access to anitem or materials, work flow becomes efficient, and theworker becomes productive. The correct place, position,or holder for every tool, item, or material must be chosencarefully in relation to how the work will be performed and who will use them. Every single item must be allocated

    its own place for safekeeping, and each location must belabeled for easy identification of what it's for.

    SEISOSeiso, the third step in "5S", says that 'everyone is a janitor.' Seiso consists of cleaning up the workplace and giving it a 'shine'. Cleaning must be done by everyone inthe organization, from operators to managers. It would be a good idea to have every area of the workplace assignedto a person or group of persons for cleaning. No areashould be left uncleaned. Everyone should see the'workplace' through the eyes of a visitor - always thinkingif it is clean enough to make a good impression.

    SEIKETSUThe fourth step of "5S", or Seiketsu, more or less translatesto 'standardized clean-up'. It consists of defining thestandards by which personnel must measure and maintain'cleanliness'. Seiketsu encompasses both personal andenvironmental cleanliness. Personnel must thereforepractice gSeiketsu' starting with their personal tidiness. Visual management is an important ingredient ofSeiketsu. Color-coding and standardized coloration ofsurroundings are used

    for easier visual identification of anomalies in thesurroundings. Personnel are trained to detect abnormalitiesusing their five senses and to correct such abnormalitiesimmediately.

    SHITSUKEThe last step of "5S", Shitsuke, means 'Discipline.' It denotescommitment to maintain orderliness and to practice the first 4 S as a way of life. The emphasis of Shitsuke is eliminationof bad habits and constant practice of good ones. Oncetrue Shitsuke is achieved, personnel voluntarily observecleanliness and orderliness at all times, without having tobe reminded by management.

    Bagaimana Menjayakan 5S?

    Penglibatan semua kakitangan- Semua kakitangan mesti melibatkan diri di dalam program 5S.- Semua kakitangan harus memahami 7 perkara seperti yang dinyatakan di

    dalam Polisi 5S Sirim Berhad.

    Penglibatan Pengurusan Atasan- Program tersebut harus diamalkan dalam masa bekerja sebagai program yang

    diberi kuasa rasmi, tetapi ia tidak harus dianggap sebagai tambahan dalammasa kerja yang lebih (overtime) atau di luar masa bekerja.

    - Setiap orang harus diberitahu secara rasmi pentingnya program tersebut.

    Kepimpinan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif - Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif sendiri haruslah menaruh minat yang banyak dan

    mempunyai komitmen dalam program tersebut.

    Sokongan semua pihak- Lenyapkan sebarang keraguan.- Setiap AJK harus memberi galakan dan bimbingan kepada orang ramai supaya

    dapat melibatkan diri dalam aktiviti-aktiviti pelaksanaan 5S.
