• Read the passage carefully• Understand it ( What the text / passage all about )• Underline the main points.• Leave out unnecessary details, repeated information and examples• Write out the main points in your own words ( rephrase )

GUIDELINES ON SUMMARY WRITING

• Use simple short sentences with linking words • Keep to the length specified• Read through the summary and check for spelling and grammatical errors• Write only in one paragraph• Remember: The names of people, places and specific events are counted as one word• Do not leave out articles ‘a’, ‘an’, or ‘the’ to save words
