Furniture for what next..Furniture is artefacts that change the 'fashion' of theenvironment.

Although the information and communication technology are moving and bringingconveniences in our lives, we cannot ignore some values we kept since manyyears ago. Through my observation, the students have achieved a certain level ofunderstanding and thinking towards sustainability. These can be seen when studentsapply a new simple method for local hatcheries in fishing industry. Problem solving isthe main activity in industrial design practice that could change things from hard toeasy or even from disaster to a successful product.

A building without furniture is like an environmentwithout a soul. Furniture is a complex combinationof art and the science of environment. It does notonly represent a piece of functional artefact but is aparameter of social changes. It must answer the needof the users to comply with the up-to-date lifestyle.Unification of new media, technology, materials andindustrial design processes assisted enormously indesign research that lead to multifunctional furnituredesign which are tailored to meet the user needs andaspirations. .

Problem solving activity also has been demonstrated by the student through aninnovation in their design projects. A design does not always come from sketches andbrain-storming processes. Although it is a must, some could derive from a scenariothat instigates new ideas. The lacking part in the design is the styling. No matter whatsituation or location that the product is 'used, some styling features must exist. Weclaim ourselves as a new and modern generation living in the 21st century where nounappealing, awful or inexcusable things were laid before our eyes. There are manyways of creating aesthetic features in a product such as the very basic application ofdesign elements and selected design principles. Simulteneously, the FishBall MouldingTool has provided an interesting aesthetic value although it represents simplicity andinclusive design. The Wavey street furniture was a decent attempt to provide leisure'artefact at a specific location in Kuala Perlis. I believe that durability and structurecomposition are the main concerns that could be improved. Usersafety isalso equally

Therefore, the furniture were designed tobe fun, emotionally connect and pleasurable with theend user through their sustainable design form andalso by being functionality aesthetic simultaneously. I am eagerly expecting more fascinating ideas from the students because our society

has changed from agrarian to information edge and now we are in the midst oftransforming ourselves to futuristic vision society. Everything that we want can beacquired simply by pushing a button. We went through various achievements andtechnological advancements which will bring us to the next level as if we are on afast conveyor towards an awe-inspirational future.

product to primarily focus upon its intended functionor purpose, In dOing so, many products hove beendesigned and developed based on its purpose tosupport human activities, In current living situation anddemands for environmentally friendly products, manynew product has been developed to respond to themodern contemporarily lifestyle, With limited spaces,current designs of modern kitchen encourage larger,yet hidden, storage rooms where most hove beendeveloped into wall-mounted cabinets,

One of the designs that emphasized modernliving lifestyle and created 'form follows function'environment is 0 kitchen step stool. The design ofthe step stool has been developed after severalobservational works on modern living lifestyle in currentkitchen environment, This step stool provides onextended components within its existing design os itcon be utilized by the users when they need to reachkitchen items from their top cabinets or any higherspace beyond their reach, (The step stool con beadjusted for on extension),

Given 0 normal situation, users will do the excessive orsometimes toke riskssuch os climbing over the kitchentop or pulling 0 wobbly choir to stand when reachingfor something at the higher level in the kitchen, Thesecould lead to home accidents or minor injuries in thekitchen. A step stool is designed not just for reachinghigher spaces but also to oct os 0 stool when not beingused os 0 stepping stool. It con be manufacturedeasily os the shope is geometrical. Furthermore, theproposed standard design size con easily fit into anykitchen and mode easy for storage and mobility,

Many customers are not happy if they have to wait to beserved at the fish monger stall. The disorganized itemsarrangement in the existing fish monger stall normallycauses delays in the business trading. Currently, there isnospecific space for the fish vendors to do their weighing andpackaging. It isalso hard for the fish mongers to determinewhich customer should be entertained first when thereare many customers. Where some fish mongers also offercut and clean service, clean and hygienic working areais required.

Fisk Cube is a workstation designed for fish mongers toorganize and speed up their daily sales routine. By havingthis workstation, sales routines can be systematicallyplanned where the most important aspects is to providecomfortable sales environment to the customer. Theworkstation also provides- a specific area or space for fishweighing, chopping and packaging. As for the hygienicand cleanliness aspects, proper drainage systems wereproposed at the workstation.

Furniture design is important both for its design andfunctionality. A designer must not only consider a designthat can cater the needs of the people but also which couldblend with the environment whether it is for indoor or anoutdoor purposes. The Wavey street furniture was proposedto be not only as the centre piece but also to let patronsseat down and rest for a little while after strolling along thepavement area. The Wavey furniture was inspired by themovement of roaring and waving waves near Kuala Perlis,Perlis jetty area where a group project was carried out. TheWavey street furniture is designed to be suitable placed atthe jetty area of Kuala Perlis. The design and material areconsidered high- tech with decorative arts.

Other than its functional role, it is perfectly suitable for anoutdoor area because the Wavey furniture is made fromstainless steel and is weather resistant especially in windywet, humid and salty air area like Kuala Perlis. The Waveyfurniture has low maintainence since the material ismetal-based and chrome plated

Beside weather resistance and lower maintenance, theWavey street furniture will easily serve its purpose as a seat.The furniture can be used by all range of people rangingfrom young to adult sizes. However, the Wavey furniturewas made purposely for temporary seating where thetube-like form used in the construction has proven to beuncomfortable for anyone seating for a long period of time .
