PTES LIBRARY WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATION By Dy Suziana bte Jaludin, Head of Library, Sixth Form Centre Sengkurong

World Book and Copyright Day (WBD) is an annual celebration that came about as a result of a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) resolution which was passed on 15 November 1995 and in which it was declared that WBD would be celebrated on 23 April every year.

The Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong Library (PTES) has, in its turn, also made WBD an annual event with a view to trying to encourage everyone at the school to take up the reading habit.

The first time it was celebrated at PTES was on 22 April 2017 when Guest of Honour Cikgu Haji Jafri bin Haji Suhaili was invited to preside over the soft launch held in the school library.

In 2018, the event took place on a much bigger scale in the PTES Multi-Purpose Hall and the Guest of Honour on the day was Awang Hanafi bin Haji Salleh, Senior History Officer at the Brunei History Centre.

This year’s celebration took place on Tuesday 23 April (17hb Sya’ban, 1440H) with the Principal Cikgu Haji Jafri bin Haji Suhaili once again invited to be the Guest of Honour for the Opening Ceremony held in the PTES Library.

Also present at the Opening Ceremony were the Deputy Principals, Heads of Department, Senior Masters and Mistresses, Lecturers and Students.

The opening ceremony began with the reading of the Surah Al-Fatihah by Awang Md Khairul Ariffin, one of the Librarians. This was followed by a speech of welcome by the PTES Principal, the Honourable Haji Jafri bin Haji Suhaili, in which he congratulated the library staff on successfully organising the event and on providing a lot of interesting activities to attract students to the library. He also stated that he hoped that there would be further developments in the form of other interesting programmes and books that would attract students to the library.

The Principal went on to say that the PTE Sengkurong Library was always one of the places that visitors to the school were taken to and expressed the hope that PTES students would make full use the library facilities instead of wasting their time by simply sitting talking and making a noise.

To conclude his speech, Cikgu Haji Jafri congratulated the organisers of the event and said that he hoped that the celebration would become a part of the PTES culture in the future.

Various interesting activities were held during the celebration, some of which were the screening of a World Book Day video, a book sale, an exhibition and quiz, the writing of Words of Motivation on Post-It to show support for World Book Day, a creative activity using parts of books that had been withdrawn as well as a Photobooth. GUIDELINES FOR CHILDCARE CENTRES IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

The National Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines For Childcare Centres in Brunei Darussalam was published in collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports under the consensus of 'Cross Functional Team : Giving Child the Best Start in Life and Multisectoral Taskforce for Health 2017' meeting. The launch was held on 24 Aug 2019. The books were distributed to childcare centres owners and entrepreneurs in the country. The guidelines book is published according to the criteria set on Early Childhood Care, Development and Education Quality Standards. Through the guidelines, a committee comprising various departments from both ministries has been established to emphasise vital information on health through healthy nutrition as well as carrying out physical activities.

EXOWORLDS BRUNEI

The 'Name Exoworlds' is an opportunity for the society in the country to take part whilst raising public awareness on the existence of the planetary system outside the solar system. IAU also has given the opportunity to other countries in the world to name one exoplanet and its hosting star. Currently, 90 countries will participate in the programme. The requirements of naming the exoplanet and star as well as further information on NameExoWorlds can be obtained through WWW.RUNEIASTRONOMY.ORG/NAMEEXOWORLDS. Participation is open to the public starting from 10 of August until 10 of October 2019. Suggested names will be selected through online voting. The highest votes in the country will be directly announced to the IAU to be reviewed, and the result will be informed officially from IAU on December.

AMERICAN SHELF' AT UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI BRUNEI On 19 Aug 2019, the Embassy of the United States of America, this afternoon launched the 'American Shelf' at University Teknologi Brunei, UTB. The shelf places 200 books of various topics contributed by the embassy. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of United States of America to Brunei Darussalam His Excellency Matthew Matthews said the contribution of books are meant to provide information about the US.

LAUNCH OF JUNJUNG KASIH On 9 Aug 2019, saw the launch of the "Junjung Kasih" book which is is a manifestation and outpouring of love as well as undivided loyalty towards His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam that acts as a contribution from the former students of the Brunei Government - Singapore Hostel in conjunction with the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty's Ascension to the Throne. The book's launch was held yesterday afternoon at the Dewan Digadong, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Go to page 10

LEGASI PAYUNG NEGARA LAUNCHED

'Legasi Payung Negara' was launched on 7 Aug 2019 to attract the younger generation and the youth to learn on the excellent contributions of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the 50 years of His Majesty's reign. The book acts as an inspiration to develop the country, religion and nation, and is highly beneficial to the society specifically the younger generation and the youth. Apart from that, the book can become a reference material, guide and lesson as well as aspiration for the future a valuable addition to the reference collections on monarchs and leaders of Brunei Darussalam. The 'Legasi Payung Negara' book, produced by Yang Berhormat Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Dr Haji Awang Muhd.Jamil Al-Sufri, Principal of the Brunei History Centre. The book among other contains the biography of a sovereign monarch who is full of charisma, integrity and aspiration to build a nation through holistic development in civilisation and culture under the Malay Islamic Monarchy Monarchy concept.

8 Aug 2019 The Co-curriculum Education Department, Ministry of Education through the Spiritual Unit has organized the 40th Nationwide Hadrah Competition for Secondary Schools and Colleges. The objective of the competition is to encourage students to internalize and learn the art of playing the hadrah which should be inherited with the Malay Islamic Monarchy, MIB concept by the generations of Bruneians.

9 Aug 2019 BIBD launched its second BIBD Connects at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas in the capital. Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD, is currently organising its BIBDSEED Marketplace (Pop-up Market), in order to provide an avenue for its current BIBDSEED recipients to offer their products to the public. In the morning, 6 events competed namely the Inter-District 20 paddlers Fiberglass Boat Race, 25 paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race, 15 paddlers Fiberglass Boat Race for Youths aged 30 and below, 25 paddlers Inter-Ministries Traditional Boat Race, 20 paddlers Inter-Private Companies Fiberglass Boat Race and 30 paddlers Open Traditional Boat Race. 6 events competed in the afternoon namely the 15 paddlers Special Event Fiberglass Boat Race, 20 paddlers Youths aged 30 and below Fiberglass Boat Race, 15 paddlers Inter-Higher Education Institutions Fiberglass Boat Race, 15 Paddlers Inter-Colleges and Secondary Schools Fiberglass Boat Race, 20 paddlers Open Youths Fiberglass Boat Race and 30 paddlers Marathon Traditional Boat Race. The 1000-metre Boat Race began in front of the Brunei Arts and Handicrafts Centre Building and end in front of the Bandar Seri Begawan Royal Wharf. The 2000-metre boat race started at the area near the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha bridge and finish in front of the Bandar Seri Begawan Royal Wharf. Meanwhile, the 5000-metre Marathon Boat Race began at the end of Pulau Si Bongor until in front of the Bandar Seri Begawan Royal Wharf.
