FORUM

5 questions are asked for you to discuss on-line through MyGuru 3: 1. Science is best learnt hands-on and these

activities benefit both teachers and children in the process of teaching and learning. As teachers observe children finding their own level within an open-ended activity, they can become more aware of what the child knows and what he may need some assistance

with. By carefully planning the next activity the child encounters, the teacher reinforces the skills that the child is mastering. Discuss one example of an activity that you have experienced while scaffolding your school children.

2. How have these philosophers’/educators’ thinking influenced community’s perspectives on children’s education? What have we learnt from them regarding young children and how to educate the children effectively? They are: • Martin Luther (1483 – 1546), John

Amos Comenius (1592-1670), John Locke (1632-1704), Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 – 1778), Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939), Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi( 1746 -1827), Robert Owen, Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel (1782 -1852), Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952), John Dewey (1859 – 1952), Abraham Maslow, Erik Erikson (1902 – 1994), Howard Gardner, Bloom, Imam Ghazali , Ibnu Khaldun .

Discuss.

3. A difference exists between what children

can do on their own and what they can do with help, discuss The Zone of Proximal Development and how it guides you as teachers.

4. Children need to play outdoors as well as

indoors to provide for all their developmental needs and outdoors should be seen as a place to play and learn, rather than as a place to take a break from learning. Furthermore learning science is actually learning about environments. Discuss.

5. Children need essential nutrition for their well being. Food provide them with energy to grow physically and mentally, and to prevent them from getting sick. These concepts are important for children’s nutrition learning. Discuss the importance of a balanced diet and how best to prepare food without losing its vitamins and minerals.
