INTRODUCTION

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) has created a course ofEngineers and Society course (BFC 32 202) as compulsory subjects for allstudents pursuing undergraduate civil engineering program at the university. Atotal of more than 500 students have signed up for a study session on the subjectof semester 2 2013/2014.

BACKGROUND

Professional Talk is a program organized by Engineering and SocietyUTHM. This program aims to give students exposure to the real situation of lifeworking field later. From this program, undergraduates can explore the world ofwork that will entice them to become more competitive in achieving something

better. With this, faculty of civil and environmental engineering students risethe university hopes to explore the essence of which was presented in an effortto have students who are not only highly skilled but also knowledge in variousfields of engineering. The seminar was held on May 31, 2014 at the LectureHall A G3 starts at 8.30 am until 11.30 am.

OBJECTIVE

1. Exposing truth regarding situation of field of work for UTHM student

2. Stimulate students' interest in improving their skills to be a competentengineer

3. Revealing a bit of engineering knowledge and the secret of success in thefield of civil engineering

WELCOMING SPEECH

The seminar begins at 9:00 am which started off with opening speech by thecourse lecturer of Engineer and Society, Mr. Rahmat bin Muslim. He explainedthat this seminar is important to university student for going through will real

life working environment. He hopes that the students take the essence of theseminar presented and applied in life in order to become a capable engineer.

SEMINAR SESSION

Talk 1 : Route to be a talented EngineerSpeaker : Encik Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria

In this session, Mr. Wan Nazri bin Wan Aria has explained several keycomponents that should be known by student to become a competent engineer.Among his speech, the purpose of talented engineers will lead to better

understandable oneself as an engineer and applying engineer ethics as well as provide the concept of structural analysis. In addition, he explains on how to bea talented engineer. According to him, a talented engineer must be able tounderstand the structure of the building and making sketches in 2 -dimensional

and 3 -dimensional. Furthermore, an engineer must have the passion and desireto be better, and applying good communication skills. Other than that, thespeaker also gave some words of wisdom to raise the morality of students ineffort to produce talented engineers which is " Yesterday is history andtomorrow is Mysteries " and "Do not give up even to wake up When you falldown many times "

Talk 2 : Mecca Clock Tower Working ExperienceSpeaker : Encik Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria

In this next talk, the speaker, Mr. Wan Nazri Bin Wan Aria will continue to talkabout his experience during the construction of the clock tower in Mecca whichis an iconic project today. In his experience as the main engineer, he isresponsible to design the structure of the clock tower building. He emphasizedthat every engineer must be proficient in terms of initial sketches that wouldeventually form a stable structure of the building and is able to bear the loadrequired when added in specific application software. According to hisexperience as the leading engineers, this project requires hard and sustainedefforts to achieve the goals he wants. In his talk, he also displays pictures duringthe construction of Mecca clock tower building. He stated that, everyconstruction in Mecca is tested and trail by the company which park in Dubai toensure that each structure install meet their safety standard.

CLOSING CEREMONY

In the end of the talk, there are time for a bit of Question and Answer sessionfor the student and the talker to share their thought and experience. En Wan

Nazri Bin Wan Aria has answered the entire question that thrown to him whichgive promising hopes for student. This session took place on a bilateral basiswith the participants who have any questions with regard to the field of civilengineering. The seminar then ended exactly at 11.30 am and the students weregiven breakfast.

CONCLUSION In conclusion, this program Route to be a talented Engineer has shown good

process and achieves all the objectives planned by the organizer of which giveexposure to the student about the real situation challenge on workingenvironment while striving to become a competent engineer. Lastly, during thetalk, the student shown positive reaction and hope that this program can bemake some other time in mere future.
