MATLAMAT (GOALS) :
The aim of the course is to apply the theories learned from the lectures to the engineering practices in the
laboratory.
SINOPSIS (SYNOPSIS) :
This course covers several topics including Static: Principle of Moment, Beam Reaction, Force Balance, and Force
Polygon; and Solid Mechanics: Tensile, Torsion, Shearing force and Thin cylinder, Bending Moment in a Beam,
Deflection of Simply-supported Cantilever Beam and Buckling of Struts.
HASIL PEMBELAJARAN (LEARNING OUTCOMES) :
At the end of this course, the students would be able to:
(1) differentiate the application of theories and principles of static and solid mechanics within laboratory work.

(2) justify and rationally conclude with decision made within group and apply laboratory equipment skills for
PSM and future applications. (A3, PLO5)

2.0 STATICS
2.1 Principle of Moment (3 hours)
Study and determination of Principle of Moment for parallel and
unparallel forces
2.2 Beam Reaction (3 hours)
Show the experimental investigation of the reaction and bending
moment in a beam loaded with point forces and distributes force. It
will show the relationship between the distribute force and point
force.
2.3 Force Balance (3 hours)
Test of balance of force acting on single point.
2.4 Force Polygon (3 hours)
Study and determine the force resultant when there is more than four
forces act in one point

Analyze the centre of gravity for various geometries.

3.0 SOLID MECHANICS
3.1 Tensile Test (3 hours) To analyze the material behavior when it imposed by tensile loading
and to determine the important properties of material such as
maximum tensile stress and Modulus of Young.
3.2 Torsion Test (3 hours) To analyze and find the relation between load and deformation
experienced by specimen.
3.3 Shearing Force in a Beam (3 hours) To measure the shearing force at a normal section of a loaded beam
and to check its agreement with theory.
3.4 Bending Stress in a Beam (3 hours) To validate the theory of beam deflection with the experimental and
to obtain the modulus of elasticity of certain material
3.5 Thin Cylinder (3 hours)
To determine the Modulus of Elasticity and Poisson Ratio, v
for the material that has a cylindrical shape.

KEHADIRAN / PERATURAN SEMASA KULIAH (LECTURE ATTENDANCE / REGULATION)
(1) Students must attend lectures not less than 80% of the contact hours for every subject including
Compulsory Attendance Subjects (Hadir Wajib – HW) and Attendance Only Subjects (Hadir Sahaja –
HS).
(2) Students who do not fulfill (1) will not be allowed to attend further lectures and sit for any further
examination. Zero mark (0) will be given to students who fail to comply with (1). While for
Compulsory Attendance Subjects (Hadir Wajib – HW), those who fail to comply with (1) will be given
Failure Attendance (Hadir Gagal – HG).
(3) Students must obey all rules and regulations of the university and must discipline themselves in order to
avoid any disciplinary actions against them.
(4) Student must obey safety regulations during learning and teaching process.
