Internet usage and electronic gadgets among form one student in a Kuala Lumpur school

Abstract

This study mainly focuses on the daily Internet and electronic usage of Form one student in a

secondary school around the Kuala Lumpur area. A group of form one class consists of 43 students

with 22 males and 21 females are taking part as the participants of this research. The focus of the

study is to find the relation between Internet usage and number gadget ownership among the students.

Internet usage and number gadget ownership among the students are the two parameters to determine

the influences of the Internet in the students’ study lifestyles and culture. This research is taking up

the quantitative approach with an online survey done within 10 minutes with each student. Collective

questionnaire will be the qualitative approach to collect data about the students’ daily Internet usage

and electronic gadget possessive. The result shows that 32 (70%) out of 43 students own a mobile

phone with an Internet application. The proposed research will provide in-depth study of influence of

Internet and smart gadgets in nowadays teenagers’ lives.

Introduction

The Internet is defined as the worldwide system that connects millions of computers together to share

and to communicate.(Smaldino, 2012) As for the Wikipedia [1], the Internet is a global system that

interconnected computers through the network and complicated network protocol. The internet was

developed by the United States of America as new military invention during the years of the Cold

War. (Sahin, 2011) Following the widespread of the World Wide Web (WWW) Internet has increase

influence over human lives with widely ownership and easy accessibility of Internet computer in the

society. Usage of Internet among students and society members has increased over the year as the

Internet became an important part of every human life. (Cho et al.2005, Sahin, 2011) Internet weaves

through human lives from shopping, communication via the wide use of social networks and new

form of medium to meet with new people by using Facebook, and etc. (Sahin, 2011)

According to statistics done by World Internet Stats on December 31, 2011 [7] there was an estimated

2,267,233,742 Internet users worldwide which covered 32.7% of the world's population. A study by

United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) jointly conducted with the Georgia

Institute of Technology [3] on the Internet in Malaysia in 2000, 31% of primary and 54% of

secondary schools already had computer facility such as computer lab , while 10% of primary and 34%

of secondary schools had Internet access. The study also found that 13.4 % or more than 3.9 million

Malaysians are active Internet users.

According to Wikipedia [2], the Internet has started to penetrate Malaysia society since 1995.

According to the usage and population statistic survey done in June 2009 by Internet World Stats [4],

there are 16, 902,600 Internet users which equals to 64.6% of the Malaysian population with 90 % of

at least 5 years active users are youth aged around 15 to 2 years old.

Recently, under Malaysia year 2014 Budget [5], the government will spend RM$1. 8 billion to

develop the second phase high speed broadband (HSBB) project in partnership with the private sector

to provide additional Internet coverage and facilities for 2.8 million households nationwide mainly in

urban areas.

Therefore, this survey is aimed to explore the Internet usage among small sample of 13 years old

teenagers to seek answers to further study of implications of Internet among adolescent and teenagers.

Aim of the Study

This survey is carried out to examine the relation between Internet usage and gadget ownership

among the students. The following are questions needed to be answered from this survey.

1. Is the daily Internet usage among the students makes any difference in the students’ lifestyles?

2. Is the ownership of gadget determined the students’ lifestyles?

Materials and Methodology Sampling Method The method used in this survey is a quantitative approach. The sampling method applied in this

survey nonprobability sample method. The nonprobability sampling chosen for this survey is

convenience sampling that save time and ease data collection procedure.

Study Group The students that take the survey come from Kuala Lumpur area secondary school named Sekolah

Menengah Kebangsaan Jinjang. The study group comes from 1A10 class with 43 students. Selection

of this sample group happens to be one of the classes teach by the researcher. The class is made out of

22 (51%) males and 21 (49%) females with their age averagely 13 years old each. Selected students

come from various social economic backgrounds with all them live around Jinjang area. Most of the

students can converse minimal English language so the language is used in this survey is Malay

language.

Study Instrument The survey form is designed by using the sample uses the survey monkey website [6] to form the 17

item questionnaire use in this survey. The survey form is designed using the Google Drive application

with an interactive and interesting theme. The first question is about their full name and the following

15 items in the survey form are multiple choice questions with average 5 choices. Only the last item

is planned as open ended questions that require sentence contrast answer and elaboration.

Data is collected by using Microsoft Excel and converted into colorful pie charts and bar charts. The

sample of the survey form is included in the appendix. Students from a form one class are brought to

the computer lab to complete the survey within 10 minutes given to every participant. They are

required to answer and complete the survey on 28 of October 2013 under the monitor of the

researcher with minimal guidance and help. The language uses in this survey is mainly Malay with

simple grammar construct to ease the students understanding about each item in the survey form.

Data Analysis Procedure From the survey of 43 students, the collection of data is presented by using the Microsoft Excel data

sheet and chart generate function. Simple statistic calculation such as percentage and suitable chart

are used to display data.

The subjects that take part in this survey consist of 22 (51%) male and 21 (49%) female form one

students as shown in diagram 1. The survey results show all students own at least 1 to 3 electronic

gadgets at home. 42% owns 4 to 7 electronic gadgets and 23% owns more than 8 electronic gadgets

(Diagram 2). Diagram 3 shows that 70% of the students own Samsung brand mobile phones, 8% of

them uses Apple iPhone, Nokia or Sony brand mobile phones, only 3% and 1% uses Huawei (China

brand) and others and respectively. From Diagram 4, we know that 32 (76%) of the mobile phone has

Internet online functions or application while 10 (24%) of the mobile phone does not have internet

online function or application.

When the question about their house internet connectivity is asked, 39 (91%) of the students

answered yes and 4 (9%) said they don’t have internet service at home. 70% equals to 39 of them has

email account and 13 (30%) does not have email account as shown by Diagram 6. Diagram 7 shows

that 79 % (33) students claim that surfing Internet is their hobby and 21% (9) students does not claim

the same statement. Majority (65%) of the students has Unifi Wifi to surf Internet at home, 11% (5)

of the students use Maxis or Celcom to get online, P1 , Umobile and Yes internet services are 7%, 4%

and 2% respectively. (Diagram 8)

From diagram 9, the bar chart shows that students use Internet for various purposes such as doing

their homework, to meet new friends or leisure.

Diagram 10 shows the frequency of Internet usage by the students, where 44% (18) access to Internet

every day for a week. 22% (9) of them use Internet around 3 to 5 hour in a week. 20% surf Internet 1

t0 2 hours weekly. Diagram 11 shows the type of software and application the students know how to

use. Diagram 12 shows the age of the students when they receive their first mobile phone.

Discussion

The objectives of this survey are to find out the influence of Internet and electronic gadgets over

students’ lifestyles. All students have at least one electronic gadget such as mobile phone or

computer in their house. So, Internet and electronic gadget are not alien to their lives. Although, 2(4%)

of the 43 students do not has mobile phone but they are exposed to electronic gadgets every day.

Jinjang is a new village surround by developing urban structures. Jinjang teenagers are familiar with

new technology and electronic gadgets as urban kids do. From data, (Diagram 7 and 9) 79% of the

students has email and 35 of them have Facebook account to go online. 41 (95%) of the students uses

Internet almost every days. All the students have Internet services at home. It is reasonable to

conclude that the studied students are computer literate and the Internet indeed plays important part in

the students’ lives. The students use Internet almost every day to complete their homework and

socialize. This indicate that Internet really influence students’ lives as well as electronic gadgets.

Conclusion Internet becomes increasing significant in teenager lives. The findings from the survey did on 28 of

October 2013 through the online survey, it shows that the Internet has significant influence over

students’ lives.
