QUESTION NO 7 & 8

SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL

Page 20: Bengkel Sains 2011

8. Diagram 8.1 Shows the apparatus set-up and the initial temperature reading of distilled water in an experiment. The distilled water is heated.

Record the initial temperature of the

distilled water

Diagram 8.1

Student should know how to read the reading of any measurement

Page 21: Bengkel Sains 2011

(b) Table 8.1 shows the result of this experiment.

Time 2 4 6 8 10

Temperature / °C

State the variables involved in this experiment Table 8.1

(i) Manipulated variable - Time(ii) Responding variable – Temperature(iii) Constant variable – Type of water, volume of water,

rate of heating

Students must know WHAT YOU WANT TO CHANGE, (Manipulated)WHAT HAPPEN if you change it: (Response)What you DONT WANT TO CHANGE. (Control, Constant, Fixed)The meaning of each of these variables must be properly understood

Responding variable

Manipulated variable

Page 22: Bengkel Sains 2011

(c) State a hypothesis based on the result in Table 8.1

Temperature depends on time

Hypothesis should be “derived” from the above stimulus. Acceptable answers are:-As time increases, temperature also increases orTime influence temperature

Hypothesis – Sesuatu pendapat yang dianggap benar tetapi belum dibuktikan –” I think – temperature will depend on time

Time 2 4 6 8 10

Temperature / °C 50 70 90 100 100

Page 23: Bengkel Sains 2011

(d) For this part of the question, use the graph paper provided on page 21.

Time 2 4 6 8 10

Temperature / °C 50 70 90 100 100

It must be a line graph. The points should be marked properly with an X and not with a dot. The line should be curved nicely. However if the points are connected with straight line it is still accepted.

In this case the line should start at 32ºC, because the temperature of water is around 32 ºC.

Based on Table 8.1 draw a graph of temperature against time.
