1. INTRODUCTION

In today’s environment, many people are feeling pressure to upgrade their skills

and academic qualifications. So many universities now offer a distance learning

program. This program is suitable for those who are working and have other

responsibilities. This program has given the working adult opportunity to upgrade

their knowledge and skills without leaving their current job and family.

Many working adult willing to continue their study for a variety of reason, such as

they may wish to advance in their currents job, they may be experiencing family

life transitions, such as death, divorce or marriage, or they may have more leisure

time and desire to acquire more knowledge. They may also be returning to school

to pursue new interest, or they may wish to resume their education after having

dropped out of school for reasons such as financial problems, competing

responsibilities, or lack of focus, maturity or motivation.

When they make a decision on continuing their study they are willing to do many

sacrifices in their time for leisure time. For those who continue their study using

distance learning program, they actually have a limited time to their own and

family. This is because the class for distance learning program usually held in the

weekends. So when there are no classes for the weekends many of them take the

opportunity to do whatever they want to do base on individual interest.

According to this, one research has been made to observe and collect data about

what are this students do on the weekends. This weekend’s habits data was

collected by doing interview and fill a form. This research was giving to the OUM

students that working as a teacher. The students that involve in this research are

20 persons, 15 female and 5 male.

2. METHODOLOGY

This research is about popular weekends habits of OUM students. It is has been

done on 20 peoples of OUM students. These students are from the same field as a

teacher but all of them are not taken the same courses at OUM.

Before the research are taking place, there are some chronology that the

researcher has to do, such as form a group of members and do the discussion how

to collect data. All group members have to sit together and decide how they are

going to ask these 20 persons of OUM students and build the questioner. In order

to answer the research question, these students asks the questions what are their

weekend’s habits. The qualitative methodology was used and specifically the

basic descriptive method was chosen to allow the researcher to understand their

habits.

This research was been set by researcher distribute form to twenty persons of

OUM students in different school and asks them to fill in the form. The form was

collected in two days.

Purposive sampling was carried out to select the OUM students and structured

form distributed used for data collection. The respondent granted permissions for

the researcher to record the interview which was useful for data analysis. Data

was also triangulated with documents available to the researcher. Data analysis

was simultaneously conducted during data collection by reading over the data.

This was followed by organizing the data, generating categories and coding them.

Based on the pie chart above, it’s show the popular weekend’s habit of OUM

students. The habits are reading, cooking, travelling, gardening, shopping, tidy up

the house, study group and access internet.

According to the pie chart, the most popular weekend habits choose by the OUM

students is reading, 24%. This show that many OUM students prefer to read and

does some revision during the weekend. They also have to read a lot if they want

to do assignment. So, they take the opportunity to read during the weekends

because they have lot of time to do so. At the weekdays they all stick with their

work and do not have much time to do it. By choosing reading as a habit during

weekend many OUM students have spend time to go library. They also can take

their children with them. At the same time they can build their children interest in

reading too.

The less popular habits choose by OUM students is study group, 3%. This is

because not many of them are willing to do the study group in the weekend. They

think in the weekend they should spend the time with family. For them study

group is not necessary for those who are prefer to study alone. They also think

study group not suitable for them because they will fight with their friend when

they are not agree with any decision. This is because as adult students they have

different experience they have been through.

The second popular habit chooses by OUM students is cooking, 18%. This is

because most of the students are female, 15 persons. So as a housewife, most of

them will take the opportunity to cook something special during the weekend. At

this time all family member are gathered and spend quality time together. By

eating together will make the relationship more closely. As mother and wife, by

cooking in weekend can help them practice better cooking. This can make their

husband and children proud of them. They will feel egger to cook even though

they do not have much time.

The third popular habit chooses by OUM students is travelling, 17%. Many of the

students choose travelling as weekend habit because they trying to spend their

time with family and enjoy the beautiful environment. They can choose to go for

picnic at the beach or waterfalls. Besides, they also take the chances to release

stress at work and study. By travelling they can gain their knowledge about

certain places they have been visited like knowing the history about the places,

geographical, and culture. From this their children and they can learn many new

things about the places they have visited.

The bar chart above shows that popular weekend habits of OUM students based

on gender. The genders are male and female. From the research, the persons

involve are 20 and 5 of them are male and the rest are female. That means OUM

students concurred by female students.

Based on the bar chart, all female students choose cooking for their weekend

habit, 20%. This is because all the female students are housewife and mother. In

the other hand this weekend habit has been part of their responsibilities. Thus only

in the weekend they get the chances to prepare a special dish for their family

because on working day they prefer to buy ready-made meals. Only in the

weekend their family can eat something special and different from the other days.

The second popular weekend habit choose by female students is reading, 16.6%.

Besides cooking, they also interest in reading because as an adult students reading

is so important to improve their knowledge and memories. So to success in all

fields they have to spend a little bit more on reading and do some revisions.

For male students, they choose reading and travelling as their popular habit in the

weekend, 8.3%. For them reading can help them to remember what they have

learnt and methods of solving problems and applications. Travelling also one of

their popular habits because by doing it they can gain their knowledge about the

environment and country.

The lowest popular habits choose by male students is tidy up the house and

female students are shopping, 1.7%. This shows that female students do not like

to go shopping in the weekend. For male students, they do not like to tidy up the

house because they think the activity should do by their wife.

Based on the chart above, its shows the popular weekend habit based on monthly

income. Monthly incomes are dividing into two group such as RM2000 –

RM2999 and RM3000 – RM3999.

The popular weekend habit based on the monthly income is cooking 17% for

RM2000-RM2999 monthly income group and 10% for RM3000 – RM3999

monthly income group. Thus their income such a very large amount they choose

not to eat out side because they think by cooking at home can do it together with

family member. At the same time, it can make their relationship with the family

more closely and understand each other. Besides it can help them to control their

budget for household.

According to the chart, the second popular weekend habit is study group 12% for

RM2000 – RM2999 monthly income group and 7% for RM3000 – RM3999

monthly income group. Even though they all have a very large amount of salary,

they think to success in their study they should spend time in the weekend to do

study group and make discussion with friend in the same course. Study group can

help them a lot to cope with their lesson. This is because in weekdays they have a

lot of work to do and they do not have enough time to read and do revisions. So in

weekend when they do the study group they can solve the problems with their

friends. That will help them a lot to understand the lesson clearly.

The third popular habit choose by the RM2000 – RM2999 monthly income group

is watching television, 8% and RM3000 – RM3999 monthly income group also

choose the same habit 5%. They prefer to watch television during the weekend

because they have lot of leisure time. So they take the opportunity to watch

television to get new news in and out of country. They also can get much

information by watching television that useful for them as students. Beside that

they also can gain their knowledge about the international news. They can build

their confident when talking with other friend about the scenario in the world.

That’s can shows to other they have a lot of knowledge.

5. CONCLUSION

Based on the research, now we can know the habits that OUM students like to do

during the weekend. This research involves only 20 persons of OUM students, 5

of them are male and the other 15 are female. They also work as a teacher in

primary school. They are not in the same courses.

This research is done because the researcher want to find out the popular weekend

habit among the OUM students based on their interest, gender and monthly

income. So from the data collections, it shows that most of them choose cooking

as their habit during the weekend. From the data almost all female student choose

cooking compare to male students they choose reading and travelling.

Even though they have a very large amount of income, they still want to spend

their time cooking at home. This shows that as a mother and housewife salary not

important compare to spend quality time with family and feeling satisfied if the

entire family members enjoy their good meals.

Reading is the second top popular weekend habit for OUM students. This is

because they all have to read a lot if they want to success in their educations.

Reading can help them to do the assignment. It also can improve their lesson and

method.

In the other hand, this research is not relevant because it only involve 20 persons

of OUM students. So the result did not show exactly all the OUM students will

choose cooking as their habit in the weekend. This research only involves the

OUM student work as a teacher. What about the other OUM student from other

field of jobs? Is their habits are the same as the teacher? So to make this research

more relevant, next time the researcher should do the research on the other OUM

students to find out their interest to. So the result can be more realistic.
