    written in the space provided.

    General Performance

A majority of the candidates showed good performance. They showed a positive

understanding of the requirements for all the three questions. Some candidates were

able to express ideas confidently, justify their reasons and construct creative and

interesting sentences. A vast majority of the candidates were able to fulfil the tasks in

the questions satisfactorily. On the other hand, due to poor command of the

language, quite a number of them failed to answer correctly.

GENERAL PERFORMANCE OF CANDIDATES ACCORDING TO THEIR GROUPS

    High Achievers

Candidates in this group were able to do well in all the three sections of the paper.

They were able to write grammatically correct sentences and express ideas

creatively using simple, compound and complex sentences. They wrote confidently,

reflecting their command of the language. Candidates in this group were able to use

similes, proverbs and idioms relevant to the context. Their answers were able to

sustain the interest of the reader.

    Average Achievers

Candidates from this group were able to construct simple and compound sentences

with occasional errors. Ideas were simple with not many adjectives, adverbs and

appropriate verbs to support meaning. Errors made were due to the confusion in the

use of vocabulary and grammar. Some candidates failed to understand the

information and clues given. They misinterpreted the graphic given resulting in

    careless mistakes.

The candidates in this group had a low level of proficiency in the language and thiscaused difficulties in answering all the questions. They were unable to fulfill the

requirements of the questions. This was due to their inability to construct simple

sentences to express ideas. The errors made were related to vocabulary, spelling,

punctuation and grammar. Ideas presented were either disorganised or showed

    confusion.
