    THE IMPORTANCE

    OF KNOWLEDGE

    WILL BE DELIVERED BY:

    UST. ALZASHA ILLIYYIN B.

    ZAINAL ALAM

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    3/48

    Let improve our piety (taqwa)

and good deeds by obeyingAllahs entire commands and

    omitting all the forbidden.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    4/48

Knowledge is one of the most

important tools in order tomobilize the advancement of a

country, including our country.Without knowledge, it is

impossible to develop a country. In addition, it risks any plan for

    development.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    5/48

    Such is the importance of

knowledge. Without it, wewill be in darkness. The

    world today emphasize

strongly on knowledge. Ifwe are not equipped with

    the correct knowledge,

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    6/48

    we will be living in

    backwardness and

looked down by others.Allah subhaanahu wa

    ta`ala says in Al-

    Quran:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    7/48

    Allah will raise those

who have believed amongyou and those who were

    given knowledge, by

    degrees. And Allah is

    Acquainted with what you

    do. (Al-Mujadilah: 11)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    8/48

    This verse explains clearly that

Allah subhaanahu wa ta`alahonors those who believe [in

Islam] and those withknowledge. Ibn `Abbas

radhiAllahu `anhu said that thedifference between the

    knowledgeable

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    9/48

    and ignorant believers is as

much as 700 levels, in whichthe distance for each level is

like the distance between theheavens and earth. Such is

    the nobility of those with

    knowledge!

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    10/48

    Studying, understanding and

mastering knowledge are crucial.Mastering is not by means of

academic only, rather it shouldbe through internalizing and

applying the knowledge in orderto attain the pleasure of Allah

    subhaanahu wata`ala.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    11/48

    Without proper internalization

and understanding, knowledgewill not bear beneficial fruits

in molding the traits of aMuslim. A persons heart needs

beneficial knowledge toincrease his closeness to Allah,

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    12/48

    just like the bodys need

    for food and drink to

continue to live andworship Allah. Allah

    subhaanahu wa ta`ala

    says:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    13/48

    Only those fear Allah,

    from among His

    servants, who haveknowledge. Indeed, Allah

is Exalted in Might andForgiving. (Fatir : 28)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    14/48

    Interestingly, we see today that

those who disobey Allah andgoing against His commands

are done equally by those whoare ignorant as well as those

highly educated. Issues such asbribery, corruption,

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    15/48

misuse of power and so on

are rampant among theeducated people. Where is

the mistake? Is it theteachers? Or is it because

    we are sincerity was never

    present in our hearts?

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    16/48

    Therefore, the internalization

and application of knowledgeare crucial to produce the

truly believing slaves ofAllah subhaanahu wa ta`ala

and those who have taqwa(consciousness) of Allah.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    17/48

    True, we have copious

scholars produced by varioushigher education institutions,

but it does not at all meanthat we have everything.

    Knowledge should be sought,

    studied and spread to others

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    18/48

so that others are able to reap

the benefits too. Knowledge isnot owned by anyone; it is a

trust from Allah that should beshared. Various methods can be

used to spread knowledgeincluding lectures, classes,

    magazines, newspapers,

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    19/48

    electronic media and so on.

Increasing number of mosqueshave also begin to organize

knowledge-based activitieswith the purpose to establish

knowledge and provideopportunities for the public to

    acquire religious knowledge.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    20/48

    Allah subhaanahu wa ta`ala

says in Al-Quran:And it is not for the

believers to go forth [tobattle] all at once. For there

should separate from everydivision of them a group

    [remaining]

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    21/48

    to obtain understanding

    in the religion and warn

their people when theyreturn to them that they

    might be cautious.(At-Taubah: 122)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    22/48

    The previous verse clearly

explains that by sharingknowledge and reminders,

mankind will always be on thepath of truth and averted from

Allahs anger. In a narration,Saiyidina `Ali bin Abi Talib

    radhiAllahu `anhu told a man:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    23/48

    Knowledge is better than

wealth, knowledge guards youwhile you have to guard you

wealth. Knowledge is thejudge (arbiter), but wealth is

the judged. Wealth reduceswhen used, but knowledge

    grows when shared.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    24/48

    The saying ofSaiyidina `Ali bin

Abi Talib radhiAllahu `anhumeans that knowledge enables a

person to make wise andconsiderable decisions before

acting. On the other hand, anignorant person often acts

    hastily and suffers from it.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    25/48

    Al-Quran, the Sunnah of the

Prophet sallAllahu `alayhiwasallam and the view of the

Companions radhiAllahuanhum explain a lot about

knowledge and its importance.Among them are:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    26/48

    1. Knowledge that is

    practiced lasts, while

wealth does not last suchthat it reduces when used.

    The Prophet sallAllahualayhi wasallam said:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    27/48

When the son of Adam dies,

all of his good deeds stopexcept for 3 things; Sadaqah

[charity], knowledge that isbenefited from and the du`a

[invocation] of his righteouschildren (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    28/48

    2. Allah subhaanahu wa

    ta`ala chooses theknowledgeable people and

    His angels to be witnesses

of His Lordship. He saysin the Quran:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    29/48

    Allah witnesses that there is

no deity except Him, and [sodo] the angels and those of

knowledge [that He is]maintaining [creation] in

justice. There is no deityexcept Him, the Exalted in

    Might, the Wise. (Ali-Imran : 18)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    30/48

    3. Knowledge paves the

    way to Jannah

[Paradise] for thosewho seek it. The

    Prophet sallAllahu

    alayhi wasallam said:

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    31/48

    Whoever makes

    effort to seek

    knowledge, Allah

will make easy hispath to Jannah.(Sahih Muslim)

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    32/48

    4. Knowledge is light that

shines on and guidespeople who are seeking

    for the signs and guidance

of their one and onlyCreator i.e. Allah.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    33/48

    The Prophet sallAllahu `alayhi

wasallam likened theknowledgeable people to the

moon that is shining in themiddle of the night. These are

few proofs to illustrate theexcellence and advantages of

    people of knowledge.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    34/48

    In a hadith narrated by

    Mu`awiyah radhiAllahu`anhum, the Prophet sallAllahu

alayhi wasallam said: IfAllah intends for a person

goodness, he will be given theunderstanding of this Deen

    (religion) .

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    35/48

    This hadith is an

    encouragement from theProphet sallAllahu alayhi

wasallam for us so that we

strive hard to acquireknowledge for our own

    benefits.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    36/48

One fact that can never be

denied is that knowledge iscritical for Muslims in order

for us to fulfill our obligationsin this religion. Matters

relating to Fardh `Ayn such aspraying, fasting, paying

    Zakaat,

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    37/48

or going forHajj, as well as

Fardh Kifayah such asmarriage, managing the body of

a deceased all require specificknowledge. With knowledge, a

Muslim will be able to performhis prayer, fasting,Zakaatand

    Hajj correctly.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    38/48

    With knowledge too,

matters ofFardh Kifayahcan be managed properly.

    Imagine what would

happen to a lifeless body ifno one knows how to

    handle it.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    39/48

    Imam Ash-Shafi`i

    rahimahuAllah said:Whoever wishes for the

world, it has to be with

knowledge; and whoeverwishes for the Hereafter

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    40/48

    should also do it

    with knowledge;

    and whoever wishes

    for both must bewith knowledge.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    41/48

    In conclusion, whatever our

aims are in this life, be it fromthe worldly pleasures or the

Hereafter, we must prepareourselves with knowledge first.

Mankind is at loss, ignorant, powerless and heading toward

    destruction without knowledge.

  • 8/8/2019 khutbah 22.1.10

    42/48

    Say, "Are those who

know equal to those whodo not know?" Only

    they will remember

    [who are] people ofunderstanding. (Az-Zumar : 9)
