These fireflies light up the mangrove trees like Christmas trees. Only limited seats are available on the boats so booking in advance is advisable.

There was a recent wedding ceremony I attended that was rather special. But what made the biggest impact (9) me was the Imam in charge of the religious side of the ceremony. The compulsory sermon was delivered with passion and determination, unlike how it's done on such occasions. It was a very (1 0) speech.

1 San Shwe Saw was an English learner from an isolated part of Myanmar. To become a successful person as he was, he had to work very hard. His poor background offered little support in his battle to learn a new foreign language. No one in his family had any knowledge of the English language. His mother, widowed at the age of twenty-six, became the breadwinner of his family. 5

2 In Myanmar, English is taught to students in school when they are ten years old.

However, poorer students like Saw were introduced to the language rather late, the first struggle was pronouncing letters called the English alphabet. As a result, Saw was still weak in English in high school. He became the laughing stock of his classmates due to his faulty English pronunciation. He remembered his English 10 class with a sense of humiliation, embarrassment and disgrace. Depression and despair became his daily companions in his classroom. His English classes never ceased to be a nightmare for him.

His decision to stop school came when he failed to pass the English paper. Failure to pass meant having to repeat the entire academic year. He felt so ashamed 15 as he thought about his poor mother, an uneducated and unskilled young woman bearing the sole responsibility for the family. Thinking about his predicament prompted him to make a decision - not to study harder in the following year but to leave school and help his mother in her tea shop. He was so shocked to see his usually timid mother completely lose her head when he quietly broke the news. As 20 tears rolled down her cheeks, she told Saw that he must complete his education.

4 Even though it was painful for him to see her spend money she could not afford, Saw's mother sent him to a special English teacher. The teacher did something different with him; he explained grammar rules in great detail. Consequently, Saw could understand the grammatical rules but he did not improve much in reading, 25 writing, listening and speaking. Every night he would pray for a miracle - that his English proficiency would equal that of his classmates.

written by a Burmese teacher. He was interested in the book because of the types of essays written for young children. As he read the essays, his comprehension 30 improved. He remembered every essay almost word for word. Getting enough English books was almost impossible since his town was so far away from the capital city of Rangoon . There were a few bookstores with children's books which were very expensive. With no money to buy books, Baw began to read the textbooks of senior students. Luckily, he could get the textbooks free at the end of each 35 academic year because the seniors were eager to get rid of them as their final examinations were over.

6 Reading gave him confidence to write academic essays and short stories. His teachers, anxious to help him pass the high school English examination, corrected his papers and lent him their storybooks. His English proficiency improved due to his 40 relentless effort but he had difficulty understanding idiomatic expressions and vocabulary. His classmate had an advanced learners' dictionary, so his house became Baw's favourite place at weekends. He copied definitions of useful words and expressions in good handwriting and posted them on t~e front door of his house so that he could see them whenever he left or entered his house. 45

7 After high school, Baw studied English at the Institute of Education in Rangoon. His English improved gradually and eventually he became an instructor at the Rangoon University. His mother was at a loss of words because he had learnt English from scratch and had to constantly fight throughout those early years learning the language, his definition of learning will never be the same as other 50 people.
