(e) Percentage of carbon by mass in hexane, C6H14

= 6(12) x 100% 6(12) + 14(1)

= 83.72%

Percentage of carbon by mass in hexene, C6H12

= 6(12) x 100% 6(12) + 12(1)

= 85.71%

Hexene contains higher percentage of carbon by mass than hexane//Hexene burnt in air produces more soot compared to hexane.

1. Measure and pour 50cm3 of zinc sulphate solution 1.0 moldm-3 into a beaker

2. Measure and add 50cm3 of sodium carbonate solution 1.0 moldm-3 into the beaker

3. Stir the mixture, filter and wash the residue4. Measure 50cm3 of nitric acid 2.0 moldm-3 into

another beaker (and warm the acid)5. Add zinc carbonate formed (from Pt 1 – 3) bit by

bit into the acid until in excess.6. Stir the mixture and filter 7. Heat up the filtrate in an evaporating dish until

one-third of original volume left and cool the solution

8. Dry the zinc nitrate salt formed between two filter papers.

Chemical equtions:9. ZnSO4 + Na2CO3 ZnCO3 + Na2SO4
