Deaf Festival II was successfullyheld for two days on 13 and 14 September2003 from 10 am to 5 pm daily atInternational Medical University, Bukit Jalil.It was a celebration promoting DeafAwareness, Deaf Culture & networking ofinstitutions / organisations, and providingservices to the Deaf Community! The themethis year was Bridging the Gap. This eventwas endorsed by the Ministry of Health,Malaysia and was supported by InternationalMedical University & Sountex Malaysia.
The Opening was officiated byDeputy General Secretary Yang BerbahagiaTuan Haji Arif bin Abu Bakar, on behalf ofYang Berhormat Dato Hjh Siti Zaharah btSulaiman. Among the VIPs who werepresent - Ms. Mei Ling Young, Provost of theInternational Medical University (IMU), Rev.Ng Ee Lin, President, YMCA Kuala Lumpur,Mr. Albert Chong Executive Director ofYMCA K.L., Mr. Yip Kok Choong, GeneralSecretary, Asia and Pacific Alliance ofYMCAs, Mr. Kieran McCarry, Manager
Sountex and Mr. Chua Hock Meng,Chairperson, YMCA Deaf Club.Various performances such as
dances, a Batik fashion show, Skit & mime,games and workshops were held. Exhibitionbooths were set up by various government
agencies, NGOs serving the Deaf, privatecompanies, deaf entrepreneurs & individuals.There were 37 Exhibitors in all, most of whomwho were promoting their companies /organisations work while others carried outthe sale of food / drinks and souvenir items.The Malaysian Aids Council and NationalTransplant Resource Centre also participated.
Those who attended had theopportunity to learn about deafness as wellas get tips on prevention and protectionagainst hearing loss. They had firsthandexperience in learning Sign Language, pluswere invited to interact with the DeafCommunity and to learn about Deaf Culture.In addition, they participated in a specialsimulated environment entitled Journey IntoThe Deaf World which allowed them toexperience what it feels like to be deaf.
A series of workshops covering topicssuch as parenting skills, courses for the Deaf,Deaf Entrepreneurship, Challenges of SignLanguage Interpreters, Hearing Aid Care,Welfare Services and Education opportunitiesfor the Deaf were held during the festival.Staff from the Welfare Department andDepartment of Labour were on hand to assistthose with disabilities to register.
Deaf members also benefited fromNokia sales of handphones at discountedprice and both children and adults were seenqueuing up to take photos with loved ones attheir MMG booth and Nokia games.
Telekoms Malaysia demonstrated their latestmodel - SMS housephone.
Children were not forgotten as therewere a number of programmes to keep themoccupied - funsticks, colouring contest andhandicraft. Prizes were courtesy from Wallsand Petrosains. Treasure Hunt was a hitamong those who participated and prizes wassponsored by Sunway Medical Centre.

Blood Donation Campaign

In conjunction with Beautiful Gate 10th Anniversary & YMCADeaf Club 30th Anniversary, a blood donation campaignamong people with disabilities will be organized. The otherorganisers are Lions Club KL Sentral and Sedaya College.

Sejarah Kelab Pekak YMCA Kuala Lumpur
Kelab Pekak YMCA telah dimulakan oleh YMCAKuala Lumpur pada tahun 1973. Kelab Pekak YMCAbermula dengan hanya 12 orang ahli dan telahberkembang sehingga lebih daripda 250 orang ahlihari ini. Kelab ini bermula dengan hanya aktiviti-aktivitlsukan dan sosial dan telah berkembang sehinggameliputi pelbagai program hari ini seperti sukan,sosial, latihan kepimpinan, kem belia kebangsaan,program tukar, program komuniti, seminar / ceramah,
program kesedaran pekak, lawatan luar negeri, dll.
Perkhidmatan bekas pengerusi Kelab Pekak YMCAKL adalah dihargai kerana mereka telah menciptasejarah Kelab Pekak YMCA dengan mengadakanpelbagai program yang berfaedah kepada ahli-ahli.Antara ahli-ahli Kelab yang telah menjadi pengerusiKelab Pekak sejak tahun 1973 sehingga kini iniadalah: Wong, Puan Rosnah Abu Samah, JocephyneYap, Ho Koon Wei, Peter Tan, Tan Heng Bee, SyedOsman b. Syed Hussein, Yip Chee Kean, Nordin
Hassan, Tang Kok Meng, Chua Hock Meng danbanyak lagi. Kepada mereka yang telah membantudalam membina Kelab ini kepada satu kelab yangberjaya, kami merakamkan Ribuan Terima Kasih.
Mulai dari tahun 1978, Kelab Pekak YMCA telahmenghantar ahli Pekak ke luar negeri untuk menyertaiKem Antarabangsa Belia Pekak anjuran YMCA di Asia(HH Camp) setiap tahun, lawatan sambil belajar keBeijing (1997), Medan & Sabah (1993) dan Deaf WayII (2002). Hingga hari ini, seramai lebih daripada 300ahli Pekak telah memperolehi pengalaman dalamprogram tersebut. Kini kebanyakan daripada merekamenjadi ahli atau AJK di persatuan / kelab masing-masing bukan hanya di YMCA KL tetapi di negeri-negeri yang lain di Malaysia.
Melalui Kelab Pekak YMCA, ramai belia Pekak telahberjaya dalam kehidupan masing-masing. Ramaibelia Pekak telah memperolehi kemahiran melaluikursus serta pendedahan dalam kepimpinan. Ramaibelia Pekak telah melanjutkan pelajaran sehinggaperingkat setinggi yang mereka boleh samada di
dalam negeri ataupun di luar negeri.
Melalui kelab ini, pelbagai program yang memberipekerjaan telah diwujudkan supaya orang Pekakdapat berdikari. Contohnya, perniagaan berkongsi
seperti Kedai Dobi Pekak Silent World Sdn Bhddalam tahun 1990, Program Insurans AIA untuk orangPekak, dll. Malahan kelab ini juga menggalakkanberniaga sendiri dan memberi peluang supaya bakatmereka dapat ditonjolkan. Contohnya, jam bergegar,doorbell flashlight, air-cond servis dan banyak lagi.
Tambahan pula, ramai belia Pekak telah menonjolkandiri sebagai pemimpin. Ada menjadi ahli jawatan kerjadalam menubuhkan Persatuan Orang Pekak KualaLumpur (1987). Ada juga menjadi ahli jawatan kerjadalam mengadakan Kem Antarabangsa Belia Pekakdi Malaysia sebanyak dua kali dalam tahun 1990 dan2000. Ada juga mengadakan pelbagai program sukanand rekreasi seperti Kem Kebangsaan Belia Pekak(1984), Inter Deaf Club Games (1985), kursusmenyelam (2003) dan banyak lagi.
Keperluan ahli-ahli kami sentiasa diutamakan. 20orang ahli kami telah mendapatkan alat bantupendengaran percuma dari sebuah syarikat Eartonedan melalui Program Yayasan Salam Wanita - 20 ahli
wanita telah mengikuti kursus komputer dan 3 ahliwanita telah diberikan komputer second-hand untukmenggalakkan mereka bekerja di rumah (workingfrom home). Banyak lagi faedah telah diperolehi olehmereka.
Kelab ini juga merupakan satu tempat di manapersahabatan dan penemuan oleh ahli-ahli pekakdigalakkan. Ada yang telah mendapat jodoh dan telahberjaya mendirikan rumahtangga. Kini aktiviti di KelabPekak juga memberi tumpuan kepada anak-anak
mereka ini.
KEPADA SEMUA AHLI-AHLI KELAB PEKAKYMCA KL - SELAMAT MENYAMBUT ULANGTAHUN YANG KE-30 INI !!!!

DC - Deaf ClubEstablished in 1973for Deaf youth andadults
This Deaf Club hasopened avenues fordeaf youths andadults to fellowshipand to participate invarious activities
including sports andrecreation, seminars,workshops ande x c h a n g eprogrammes since itsformation in 1973.
DTC - Deaf Teens ClubDeaf teens started the Deaf Teens Clubin 1993 to develop their social andleadership skills; to build self-confidence,self-esteem and self- reliance.
DKC - Deaf Kids ClubThis club, started in 1999, is for Deafchildren, their siblings and friends.
Hearing children include childrenof Deaf adults (CODA) are encouraged toparticipate and learn how to communicatewith the Deaf using basic signs in creativesessions, outdoor trips, camping, andcrafts.
FOD - Friends of the Deaf ClubSigners who love to Sign!
Set up in 1998, the Signers Club, later renamed Friendsof the Deaf Club, provides an avenue for improving
signing skill as well as volunteering in Deaf work.
PSG - Parents Support GroupSupport Group for Parents of Deaf Children
Set up in 1989, the YMCA Parents Support Groupprovides family-focussed support and counselling to helpparents cope with the challenges of bringing up a specialchild. Discussions, workshops, and seminars byprofessionals; social recreational activities for the familyand an annual family camp are also organised to
strengthen inter and intra-family ties.

Persidangan Penterjemahan Antarabangsake-9, 2--4 September 2003
Penyertaan Pusat Majudiri Y yang diwakili oleh PnLucy Lim ke persidangan di atas ini telah ditajaoleh Institute Terjemahan Negara Malaysia. Beliau
telah membentangkan kertas kerja berjudulChallenges of Sign Language Interpreters inMalaysia. Sebelum ini satu soal selidik telahdihantar kepada semua Jurubahasa Isyarat diseluruh Malaysia untuk mendapatkan pandanganmereka. Respon ini telah dibentangkan padapersidangan tersebut dan telah mendapatkansambutan yang hangat dan ramai daripadapenterjemah di persidangan tersebut yang inginmengetahui dengan lebih lanjut mengenaiprofession ini.

Akta Orang-orang Kurang Upaya (OKU)
Tahukah anda semua bahawa tidak lama lagigolongan orang-orang kurang upaya akanmempunyai satu akta yang melindungi hak kitananti? Akta OKU telah mula dibincangkan dari
semasa ke semasa. Antara ini, perbincangan AktaOKU mengenai pendidikan telah diadakan diMalaysia Bar Council dalam tahun 2001. Baru-baru ini, pertemuan NGO dan kerajaan tentangpenggubalan Akta OKU 2002 telah diadakan diHotel Crown Princess, Kuala Lumpur pada 27--30
Ogos 2003. Golongan OKU-Pendengaran telah diwakili oleh MFDdan Pusat Majudiri Y. Adalahdicadangkan untuk merancangkansatu forum mengenai Akta ini kepadaahli-ahli DC/DTC tidak lama lagi.
