In The Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most
Merciful
est Wishes and Greetings to all Members
of PERWAKILAN Chennai and all
Readers!!!
Praise be to the Almighty that the Ladies of
PERWAKILAN have been able to publish the
current edition of the “PERWAKILAN Chennai E-
Newsletter/ Bulletin, No.2”. This E-Newsletter cum
Bulletin provides a forum for the Malaysian Ladies
in Chennai to share ideas in a more effective, fun
and creative way. Taking full advantage of social
media and to reach out to more Malaysians in
Chennai as well as the rest of the areas in the
south of India, the current E-Newsletter is also
posted over on PERWAKILAN Chennai’s blog on
WordPress and on our Facebook page, as well as
the website of the Consulate General of Malaysia
in Chennai.
We are proud to say that our Ladies have
been working hard over 2016 to increase, expand
and upgrade all the activities of our PERWAKILAN
Chennai.
Our notable involvement under the
Overseas Women’s Club in the International Food
Carnival organized by the Madras Cosmopolitan
Round Table 94 (MCRT 94) and Madras
Cosmopolitan Ladies Circle 38 (MCLC 38) was a
good beginning to mark our participation on par
and on the same level with the other international
Ladies clubs and associations in Chennai. We
managed to achieve our target to give charity as
well as raising some fund to increase
PERWAKILAN’s income. For this I would like to
extend my personal heartfelt thanks to all the
members of
PERWAKILAN for their effort, time and
cooperation in making our participation a
resounding success.
Another remarkable event was the
Malaysian Missions In India Family Day 2016, a
joint collaboration of events organized with the
cooperation of the High Commission of Malaysia
in New Delhi and the Consulate General of
Malaysia in Mumbai. We were honored to receive
His Excellency the High Commissioner Datuk
Naimun Ashakli and the Consul General of
Malaysia in Mumbai Mr. Eldeen Hussaini who
came to the event.. It was a day-long event full of
activities in the spirit of camaraderie,
sportsmanship and friendship.
Charity begins at home and home cooked
food is the BEST. With this in mind, every month
one of the Ladies has generously hosted our
Monthly Potluck Gathering. This kind of gathering
is meaningful to all our members where we can
meet up and celebrate important events such as
celebrating the birthday of our loved ones.
We are also heartened that our effort at
Charity had been able to touch and improve the
livelihood of the local women when we managed
B

to donate Rupees 10,000 to the ladies of Anjuman
Mosque as well as donate to the Iftar programme
for the Mosque’s Orphanage during the 2016
Ramadan. We do hope that with this spirit,
PERWAKILAN Chennai will continuously excel to
organize activities based on the 3 principles of
Cheer, Charity and Camaraderie in mind.
And surely 2016 have come around with its
own share of challenges. The currency
demonetization in its initial stages had also
affected our daily lives – how could we do our
shopping when there was not enough new
Rupees to go around! Thank God that we could
use our debit and credit cards to do our spending
… imagine if we were posted to places where
there are more dire currency problems. Further,
while most of us were worried that 2016 will see a
return of the kind of flooding that hit Chennai in
2015, many of us did not expect that instead of
flooding we were hit by Cyclone Vardah that saw
much disruption in our daily lives in December …
from electricity blackouts to disconnected internet
services. And yet together, with our loving
husbands, partners and families, we persevered
against all these challenges.
Therefore, 2016 had concluded with our
achievements for PERWAKILAN Chennai to play
our role in the three-major circle that is
International, Local and Organizational level.
Together as One, PERWAKILAN Chennai can
work towards achieving all our goals effectively.
On this note, I would like to express my personal
thanks to all the members of PERWAKILAN
Chennai for their continuous support in team work
and their good understanding of their role as
PERWAKILAN.
Thank you all!

merican International School Chennai
introduced Student-Led Conferences in the
fall of year 2013. This is a reporting
procedure. The student is very actively involved in
the learning, goal setting, and reporting process, is a
fundamental shift from the one-way transference of
information from teacher to parents.
These Conferences take place two times per
year. The first one, Fall Student-Led Conference
goal-setting will be for 20 minutes long, with one
family in the room at a time. The second, Spring
Student-Led Conference will be conducted for 30
minutes long, with two families in the room at one
time, and a 15 minutes staggered start time. This is
an opportunity for parents to see the relationship
between the teacher and student, and to establish
the partnership between
all three: student, teacher and parents.

hennai is Tamil Nadu’s dining capital.
Known for its rich cultural legacies,
the city boasts with selections of
regional and international cuisine. The
choice of dishes available is vast and caters
for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
The delicious combination of flavours will
appeal to all foodies. The common food
staple in Chennai includes Idli(steamed rice
cakes) or dosa which are served with coconut
chutney, lentil broth and powdery mix of
lentils. Another staple food is rice. An
example of a dish combination would be the
locals having their steamed rice with rasam,
sambar, chutney and curry. Chennai is also
known for its southern filter coffee. The
combination of roasted coffee beans and
fresh chicory creates an irresistible aromatic
blend.
A good selection of cheap and cheerful
eateries is dotted around Anna Salai, while
T.Nagar is home to Chennai’s mid-range
dining options. The city’s most expensive
restaurants are those specialising in
international cuisine, such as Chinese, Italian
and Japanese. Most of these high-end
establishments are strategically located close
to five star hotels in areas such as Cathedral
Road, Nungambakkam and St. Thomas
Mount.
Cathedral Rd/Nungambakkam This area has a distinct international flavour
and is peppered with restaurants serving
everything from tapas to Thai. This might be
considered as one of the most expensive

Mylapore is the best spot. Restaurants in the
area have been passed down through
generations, thus menus feature dishes
which have been perfected by time.
Dakshin ITC Hotel Park
Sheraton This intimate and inspiring restaurant is
particularly good for seafood, especially the
lobster and prawn dishes. Featured dishes
draw their influences heavily from Tamil
Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
Buhari Restaurant (Mount
Road) If you are passing by the Mount Rd you will
definitely notice a red white combination of
letters that spells out BUHARI. First to open
its door to the public in 1951, it is the
originator of ‘Chicken 65’. A famous fried
chicken dish thats popular amongst the locals
as well as other delectable dishes one should
definitely try which is the Rogan Josh, Paya,

Bengaluru Suburban Rail May Soon Be A Reality BENGALURU: FEBRUARY 16, 2016 00:00 IST
UPDATED: FEBRUARY 16, 2016 05:32 IST
State has proposed project
connecting Mandya-Kengeri,
Tumakuru-Yeshwantpur,
Whitefield-Byappanahalli
n what could soon alleviate
the daily commute for those
who travel to the State
capital for work, the State
government has proposed
a Bengaluru suburban
railway system connecting
Mandya and Kengeri,
Tumakuru and
Yeshwantapur, and
Whitefield and
Byappanahalli (in Bengaluru) in the first phase.
The estimated cost of the entire project is Rs. 9,000 crore. The State has requested the
Centre to take up first phase of the project, which would cost Rs. 1,000 crore. This would help ease
traffic congestion in Bengaluru city, which has emerged as the country’s technology capital apart from
being the leading IT hub.
The State government had discussed the suburban railway project in the Invest-Karnataka meet held
recently. The project requires minimal intervention; it only needs upgrading of existing facilities and
negates building from scratch.
Addressing presspersons on the project, Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George on Monday said
the Centre has shown the green signal for the Bengaluru suburban railway project. Union Railway
Minister Suresh Prabhu is likely to announce the project in the Railway Budget later this month.
The project would be a joint venture initiative envisaging 49 per cent investment and ownership by the
Railways and 51 per cent share to the State.

of Tamil education in 1816. He also underscored the
need to foster ancient Tamil art forms and also to
form alliances with people in Malaysia to enhance
the status of Tamil. Tamil people had the pride of
having ownership of the mother of all languages, he
said.
Outlining the initiatives to commemorate the
bicentenary of Tamil education in Malaysia, Mr.
Kamalanathan said that at present the country had
524 Tamil schools with 10, 000 teachers and one
lakh students and efforts were on to expand it
further.
Jegath Gaspar, convenor of Sangam 4, called for
efforts to institutionalise exchange and dialogue in
the field of education between the two
countries. He also suggested the inclusion
of Madurai as an ancillary subject in
courses offered by autonomous colleges in
the region. C. Pandithurai, who received
an award for fostering Tamil in Malaysia,
felt that the school curriculum in Tamil
Nadu should contain lessons on Tamils
living abroad.

CM Told To Get Sustainability Of Amaravati Studied VIJAYAWADA: MAY 04, 2016 00:00 IST
Naidu welcomes ideas for a futuristic, self-contained city
hief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu sought the
expertise of Malaysian government and
businesses in the development of Andhra
Pradesh and promised to extend full support to
their endeavours. While saying so, he acknowledged
the fact that the sustainability of the emerging capital
city Amaravati had to be studied for better planning.
In an interactive session with a Malaysian trade
delegation led by its Minister of International Trade and
Industry Mustapa Mohamed, here on Tuesday, Mr.
Chandrababu Naidu was asked by a senior executive
of IJM India Infrastructure to get the sustainability of
Amaravati measured and rated globally not only for
attracting investments but also setting benchmarks in
urban designing for other cities in the world.
The Chief Minister replied that he would welcome
experts in urban planning and designing to help A.P. in
transforming Amaravati into a futuristic, self-contained
city that is in harmony with nature. He said he was
very much impressed with the Economic and
Government Transformation Programs
that the Malaysian Government’s
Performance Enhancement and
Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) had
undertaken and looked forward to its
full involvement in shaping up
Amaravati. The 15 per cent growth
rate targeted for FY 2016-17 would
open new vistas of development for
those looking to harness the potential
of A.P., he added.
Mr. Mustapa Mohamed said Malaysia
and A.P. had a long record of ties and
the Southeast Asian country was
keen on building on the strong
foundations laid more than two
decades ago. “We are excited with
the opportunities in Amaravati and
will certainly utilise them. We will
also share the best practices in
governance and other areas that
facilitated our growth into one of the
economic powers to reckon with in
these parts of the world.”
Open sessions
Ravindran Devagunam, Director of
PEMANDU Labs, said it would organise
‘open sessions’ in the coming weeks to let the people
of A.P. know about the outcomes of the work being
done by the Malaysian organisation. “We will help A.P.
in improvising governance services delivery and in
rolling out IT applications,” he added.
Malaysian Consul General in Chennai, Ahmed
Fajarazam and Malaysian Investment Development
Authority Deputy CEO N. Rajendran were among
those present.

'Despite Having Huge Potential', direct service from Madurai to Malaysia yet to take flight TNN | Aug 1, 2016, 07.29 AM IST
adurai: Despite a strong link between the large Tamil
diaspora in Malaysia and the southern districts of Tamil
Nadu, air-connectivity between Madurai and Malaysia is
yet to become a reality.
On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry
submitted a memorandum to the consul general of Malaysia
Ahamed Fajarazam Bin Jalil, who is on a visit to the city, urging
the country's support in getting a direct flight between Madurai and
Kuala Lumpur. In its memorandum, the chamber noted that Tamil-
speaking people originating from the southern districts, especially
Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram, will contribute
significantly towards both inbound and outbound traffic in this
sector.
It is estimated that as many as half a million passengers hailing
from Madurai and other southern districts fly out of the state every
year through Trichy and Chennai airports to various international
destinations, with the majority of them travelling to Malaysia.
Early introduction of direct flight between Madurai and Kuala
Lumpur will be commercially viable for Air Asia and immensely
benefit passengers and would also encourage more people to
travel to Malaysia on vacation, the trade body observed.
It also pointed out that Madurai is a prominent destination for
foreign tourists. There are also other tourist destinations like the
salubrious hill station Kodaikanal, Munnar, Courtallam waterfalls,
Rameswaram and Kanyakumari which can be easily reached from
Madurai. "The major concern is that there is no bilateral treaty
between India and Malaysia to
operate flights to Madurai. So we
are appealing to the Malaysian
authorities to take it up with our
government," said senior
president of chamber S
Rethinavelu.
B S G Musthafa of Meraj Travels
said that a delegation from the
trade body had met Air Asia
officials in November 2011,
seeking a flight. "They responded
positively. But Air Asia is waiting
for approval from the director
general of Civil Aviation and the
inclusion of Madurai airport in the
bilateral treaty between India and
Malaysia," he said.

E-visa System Becoming Popular: Consul General TIRUCHI: NOVEMBER 07, 2016 21:01 IST
he e-visa system introduced by Malaysia a
few months ago is becoming popular with
more number of Indians opting for the
online route to obtain visa to visit that
country.
The office of the Consulate General of Malaysia
for South India in Chennai issues about 500
electronic visas every day ever since the system
was introduced on April 15. Consul General of
Malaysia for South India A. Fajarazam told The
Hindu here on Monday that the Malaysian
government had introduced the electronic visa
system as it was cheaper, faster and
more efficient.
The electronic visa was an
improvement made in the issue of
visa in addition to the regular system.
The office of the Consulate General
of Malaysia for South India issued
about 2.50 lakh visas annually. The
figure had been rising every year.
With the introduction of e-visa
system, it would increase further,
Mr. Fajarazam said.
He said around 7.25 lakh Indian
tourists visited Malaysia in 2015.
Of them, 65 to 70 per cent were from south India.
Malaysia, he said, was very keen to operate its
carriers to South Indian cities of Coimbatore and
Madurai as well in view of the huge potential.
This was put forth during the visit of Malaysian
Minister of Transport Liow Tiong Lai to India in
March. The same was reiterated by Malaysian
Deputy Minister of Education P. Kamalanathan
during his brief visit to Tamil Nadu recently.
