    INTRODUCTION

when bodies are decompose, burnt or in cases where only

small fragments or calcified tissues are available for

identification dental hard tissue gain importance for

    identification

teeth can withstand extreme temperatures and resistant topostmortem decomposition

    ENAMER ROD / PRISM

        e    n    a    m    e     l

Enamel ectoderm derived cell called ameloblast

Basic structural unit of enamel enamel rod (enamel prism)

Enamel prisms morphology reflects the morphology of ameloblasts in species-specificmanner

Macroscopically, incremental pattern of enamel rods is exhibited on tooth surface as

    perikymata

Microscopically, groups of enamel rods run in unique direction, which differ fromadjacent group of enamel rods forming different patterns of enamel rod endingson tooth surface

Each tooth has millions of enamel rods and that the number varies from tooth totooth

    ORIENTATION OF ENAMEL ROD

Formation of enamel is highly organized dynamic process, in which the

ameloblast lay down enamel rods in an undulating and interwining path

Reflected on the outer surface of the enamel as a series of enamel rodend pattern

General orientation of the enamel rods is perpendicular to the dentin

In permanent teeth, the enamel rod show a rootward inclination orpass outward

    ENAMEL ROD END PATTERN

    • composed of series of line representing series ofadjacent enamel rod ends

    • running in varying directions creating distinct sub-patterns

•unique, exhibiting dissimilarity both between tethof different individuals and of the same individual(valuable tool in forensic science for personalidentification)

enamel rod end patterns = tooth print

    USES & CONCLUSION

    • as an adjunct with other methods for personal identification• as adjunct antemortem dental records of fire fighters,

soldiers, jet pilot, dive dan people who live or travel topolitically unstable country

    • technique is simple, inexpensive and rapid

    USES

    • its reproduction and permanency need to be evaluated
