Book authored by Rashid Esa,
Director of Mah Meri Cultural Village
Background Information
1. Palm Leaf Origami
Palm Leaf Origami is known as the Flowers of the spirits or Bunga Moyang to the Mah
Meri indigenous tribe of Malaysia.
2. Mah Meri Cone
Mah Meri Cone is made from either bamboo or mangrove timber wrap with palm leaf
origami in a shape of a snake.
3. Mah Meri tribe
Discovered by the British in late nineteen century while opening land for a plantation,
Edward Valentine Carey used the services of the Mah Meri to clear the land for his
plantation. Now famed for the spiritual mangrove sculpturing, leaf origami, rituals
and practices, they lived in about 10 different villages in Selangor. Their culture and
religion predates most of our social system. The total population of Mah Meri in
Malaysia is 4,200.
