6.0 Reflections.

The D.E.A.R Programme implemented in my school was initially to be carried out in

the class every Wednesday during the first period of teaching. But after a discussion with the

English Committee members, we decided to implement during One Malaysia assembly. This

is due to several factors. Among them are:

1. The possibility lack of cooperation from the other teachers who are not teaching English.

2. Teachers during the first period who might probably enter the class late. This resulted in a

noisy class.

3. Easy to monitor this programme during the assembly. Pupils can be more easily

controlled with the help of other teachers and also school prefects.

4. Save time. During the assembly, the pupils have only to move to the assembly ground

than to their classes.

6.1 During Implementation.

D.E.A.R Programme is launched on 4th April 2012 (Wednesday) by the English Panel

Head Puan Halimatun Sa’adiah bt Mohd Zan. Pupils were given about ten minutes to read the

literature or books which they bring along or they borrow them from the School Resource

Centre. After ten minutes, a student is called forward by the teacher on duty to talk about the

story that they have read or the teacher on duty ask a few questions on the books that they

have read.

6.2 Observation and Conclusions.

After implementing for five times, it was found that not all students pay attention to

reading. There are also individuals who do not read especially the remedial classes. Some did

not pay attention during the questions and answer session.

D.E.A.R PROGRAMME REPORT (SRK.STELLA MARIS) FIK3042

Some teachers do not give their full support during this programme. The materials

supplied is insufficient and appropriate to the level of the pupils. Some of the pupils are

reluctant to bring their own reading materials. Due this, the reading materials from the school

is not compatible with them.

The programme has been running for a month now and to some extent have affected

the school community. Indirectly it can in still a love of reading among the pupils in this

school. At least it will give exposure to pupils and indirectly help to improve their

vocabulary. The teachers and pupils get more confident to speak in English.

6.3 Suggestions and improvements

If this programme is to be implemented again in the near future, I suggest that it is carried

out in the classroom. Pupils can sit down with teachers and read together. Pupils should be

encouraged to bring books or other reading materials of their own from home. In addition, the

teachers can choose the books which are suitable for their pupils. Allocation of time for ten

minutes should be extended to twenty minutes so that the pupils can record the reading material

that they have read in their log books.
