Handling a jam-packed class of students is one of the main challenges faced by teachers.

There will not be much chance for students to engage meaningful learning experiences, if

teachers do not have an effective plan in place. Classroom management is a term used by

teacher to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly, despite

disruptive behaviour by students. The term also infers the inhibition of disruptive behaviour.

The classroom environment not only provides a context for learning and includes the

physical space, furnishings, resources and materials, but also the class atmosphere,

participants’ outlooks and emotions and the social dynamics of the learning capability.

A well-planned classroom is the schooling objectives focus on academic behaviours,

appropriate use of materials, learning centers and also cooperation with students. Hence in

this sound recording, the lecturer generate a community of learners apprehend the roles and

mug up on how to work effectively. All actions taken by the lecturer are focused on

minimizing disruptions and fostering an environment where students can learn better.

First and foremost according to Mr. Jega, he develops rules to create a productive learning

environment. Managing student’s behavior is clearly a multifaceted process especially when

he mentioned that the noisiness of the classroom and the usage of mobile phone distract his

learning session. In spite of that, he will not let go the students early about five or ten

minutes late from the actual time as a punishment and give them some extra work.

Therefore, the students will put away their mobile phone and stay quiet as well.

Facing the problematic students won’t be easy. Referring to the lecturer on how he handles

his descriptive student behaviours, he inclines a positive relationship with his students;

discuss about something related to the lesson or crack some funny jokes to make the

students cooperate among themselves and pay attention which would create a classroom

setting in which students feel safe and secure. He would become sensitive to their needs as

well as making the classroom atmosphere feel more relaxed and pleasant by motivating the

learners using his personal experiences as a teacher. So, everyone can bloom and do their

best.

The lecturer derives his students to be self-reliant by getting along well with his peers. He

engages his students in considerable verbal give-and-take such as motivational talk and

show a thoughtful attitude toward them but they still have limitation when indispensable.

Over the past decade there has been a rapid growth of multimedia in education, it is

understandable to incorporate multimedia technology into the teaching and learning process.

What has been the conventional teacher-centred approach is now seeing a change into one

which emphasizes on student-centred learning. Traditional educational content can now be

transformed into interactive multimedia content by using authoring packages. What is

interactive multimedia? Interactive multimedia can be defined as an integration of multiple

media elements (audio, video, graphics, text, animation, etc.) into one synergetic and

symbiotic whole that results in more benefits for the end user than any one of the media

elements can provide individually” (Reddi, 2003). It also enables the teacher to modernize

his/her teaching method by presenting the educational content in an interactive and multi-

sensory manner rather than the traditional single media format. This infusion of multimedia

into teaching and learning has changed learning strategies in educational institutions.

Hence, with the beginning of this pervasive information technology, many colleges and

universities, including those in Malaysia, are now gearing their teaching and learning

towards one which uses multimedia technology to enhance the student's learning process.

Furthermore, students feel motivated when using technology, especially the new emerging

technologies. They feel empowered and often content is more accessible to them.

As you can listen to the recording, Mr Jega loves to use video or picture as a teaching

aid/material for both lecture and tutorial classes. Meaning here, he loves to use interactive

multimedia and he believes in this modernize way of teaching. He feels like whenever he

uses this type of teaching aid, he is able to grasp the students’ attention and make the

learning process fun and interactive at the same. He also said that by using only one

teaching aid, for instance, a picture, he is able to ask a variety of questions based on just

one picture. Plus, the students are forced to be creative when interpreting the picture so that

they can answer those questions correctly. That is all what he said about the teaching aid /

material he prefers to use in the interview that we did.

Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. It demands broad knowledge of subject

matter, curriculum and standard, also enthusiasm, a caring attitude and a love of learning,

and knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques, and a desire to make a

difference in the lives of young people. With all these qualities required, it's no wonder that

it's hard to find great teachers.

A great teacher works tirelessly to create a challenging, nurturing environment for their

students. Great teaching seems to have less to do with our knowledge and skills than with

our attitude toward our students, our subject, and our work. From Mr. Jega’s opinion, he said

that the definition of a good teacher is a teacher who imparts knowledge to students and

makes learning fun and interesting. Besides, he also stated that a good teacher must go to

that extra miles when students are having a personal problems.

A good teacher must have good characteristics. According to Mr. Jega, as a good teacher,

we need to set high expectations to all of our students. Not that we need to force them to

achieve the goals that we aim, but at least don’t give up on them, especially on under-

achievers. He also said that a good teacher must have a strong relationship with their

students. We need to show to the students that we care about them. He mentioned that

being a good teacher must be warm, accessible and caring.

Moreover, he said that teachers with these qualities will stay after school and always make

themselves available to students and parents who need them. Some people said that being

a teacher is like you work around the clock. This means that if students ask you some favor,

even during midnights, you must be able to be there for the students. Good teachers also

must involve in school-wide committees and activities, also demonstrate a commitment to

the school. He also added a good teacher communicates frequently with parents such as

reaching the parents through conferences or frequent written reports to home. We, as good

teachers, must not hesitate picking up the telephone to call parents if they are concerned

about the students.

Students learn better in a good and comfortable surroundings. If the teacher has a lousy

attitude, the students are going to have lousy attitudes. If the teacher is joyful, the students

are going to be joyful. What is most important is the teacher’s attitudes because a teacher is

a role model to students. Besides, being a good teacher, we must have passion in teaching

because being an educator is a hectic career. Teaching is a noble job. If we don’t have the

passion or hoping something in return, we will not enjoy the teaching and you might come

across many problems in our career.
