G13 Projec t Room was es tabl i shed in 2016. G13 Projec t Room was in i t ia l ly created by G13 gal lery as a pla t form to h ighl ight new faces to the indus t ry. G13 Projec t Room also promotes new innovat ive di rec t ion of those who wishes to divers i fy thei r ar t s by ventur ing in to new methods and mater ia ls .

G13 Projec t Room is in i t s n in th ins ta l lment and G13 gal lery is proud to present Haziq Syawal, a f resh graduate ar t f rom Univers i t i Teknologi Mara (UiTM). The Projec t Room showcase denotes Haziq’s f i r s t exhibi t ion at G13 gal lery. Before, he has jo ined several group exhibi t ions at gal ler ies in K lang Val ley area.

Having him keen on fashion t rends, the ar t i s t i s par t icu lar ly in teres ted in the r i se of ‘s t ree twear’ fashion. Unl ike the in t r icate c lo th ing that was created by most h igh -end fashion designer, Haziq fee ls that ‘s t ree twear’ fee ls c loser to younger generat ion as far as pract ical i ty , comfor t -abi l i ty and af fordabi l i ty goes.

The exhibi t ion features a ser ies of se l f -por t ra i t pain t ing that was done in a s i t t ing pose. The subjec t i s por t rayed in di f fe ren t pos ture, v iew and the c lo th ing. The ar t i s t a lso incorporated col lages of canvas patches on his sur face. The addi t ion of col lages added cer ta in depth and value to h is subjec t as he met icu lous ly pain ted them in the pre -p lanned manner of the col lage pas t ing. Haziq also added mark -making value to the pain t ing which can be seen throughout h is pain t ings. This e f fec t cannot be seen in the fashion photography works that he was inspi red by in the f i r s t p lace. I t i s a lmos t l ike adding his personal touch to h is subjec t .

Haziq as an emerging ar t i s t has been keeping his works in check. Af ter graduat ing f rom his ar t school, he did some commiss ion pain t ings, prop-making jobs that would sharpen his sk i l l s as an ar t i s t . Through G13 Projec t Room program, the ar t i s t would not on ly be showcasing his body of work as an in t roduct ion to h is ar t career but a lso a s tep moving forward for h is wel l -being both as an ar t i s t and a person. The showcase wi l l d isp lay seven mixed media pain t ings f rom the ar t i s t .

ARTIST STATEMENT

To me, one of mark -making funct ions is to get an exact propor t ion of a subjec t whereas every 360 angle is measured f rom one angle to another. That i s of course, in order to get the accuracy. Regarding se l f -por t ra i t as subjec t , i t i s the outcome of my thought and observat ion over my sur rounding. I can see al l o f the fundamenta l e lements of ar t are wi th in us. For ins tance, the e lement of ar t i t se l f and the basic theor ies has been taught in fundamenta l books. However i t i s jus t a theory unders tanding of mine. I , as an ar t i s t , have expressed my take on th is theory through my ar tworks by u t i l iz ing the concept of col lage, colors, l ine, and value as mark making.

“Bagi saya, fungsi membuat tanda adalah untuk mendapatkan bahagian subjek dimana se t iap360 sudut berhubung di antara satu dengan lain. Sudah ten tu, ia inya ber tu juan untuk mendapatkan ketepatan. Mengenai pot re t di r i sebagai subjek, ia adalah hasi l pemik i ran dan pemerhat ian saya terhadap perseki taran saya. Saya mendapat ibahawa unsur -unsur asas seni berada dalamdir i k i ta. Sebagai contoh, unsur seni i tu sendi r i dan teor i - teor i asas te lah diajar dalam buku -buku asas. Walau bagaimanapun, ia hanyalah satu pemahaman teor i saya. Saya, sebagai ar t i s meluahkan teor i saya mela lu i karya saya yang menggunakan konsep kolaj , warna, gar is , dan ni la i sebagai pembuatan tanda.”
