G13 Project Room proudly presents a Malaysian senior women art ist named Dato’ Shar i fah Fat imah Syed Zubir. This exhibit ion wi l l be the fourteenth instal lment of G13 Project Room.

Shari fah Fat imah Syed Zubir was born in Alor Setar, Kedah. She received her ear ly educat ion in Alor Setar. After complet ing her school ing, Shar i fah Fat imah continued her studies at the Mara Inst i tute of Technology ( ITM) in 1967 special is ing in Fine Arts . She received her Diploma in Fine Arts in 1971, and at the same t ime she also received the award as the Best Student of Mara Inst i tute of Technology. After complet ing her studies at the Mara Inst i tute of Technology, Shar i fah Fat imah continued her studies at Reading Univers i ty, England in 1973 and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1976. In 1978, Shar i fah obtained her Master’s degree in the f ie ld of Fine Arts f rom Dratt Inst i tute, New York. She is a prominent abstract art ist in Malaysia and she belongs to the group of art ists of the 70’s era.

“My concern is . . .with the del ineat ion of inner spaces created by the over lapping transparencies of colours. Each form has i ts own inner space, yet i t is constant ly connect ing with another and f lowing into i t . I depict both posit ive and negative space, l ight and dark colours, harmonius and constrast ing colours; not just depict ing but making use of one to enhance the other. . .

Only in i ts reciprocal ref lect ion does each disclose i ts own meaning. . .”
