Topik : Carbon Materials in Catalysis

Singapore

Carbon in its elementary form exists in almost every possible

structural order and morphology. Such flexibilities allow

carbon materials to be exploited in the field of heterogeneous

catalysis and electrochemistry among others. In heterogene-

ous catalysis, carbon can act as the catalyst, catalyst support,

reactant, poison, and as the product. Albeit the vast applica-

tion of carbon in catalysis and electrochemistry, there are still

unresolved fundamental questions such as the catalyst-carbon

support interaction and the role of carbon in electrocatalysis.

In this talk, we try to address the two issues by examining the

role of structural ordering in carbon materials as support for

metal-catalysed carbon nanotube synthesis and as catalyst in

electrochemical reactions relevant to energy storage systems.

Ultimately the goal of such studies is the elucidation of

structure/reactivity relationship for carbon materials to design

better catalyst systems.
