KATA PENGANTAR
menunjukkan kemajuan sangat signifikan.
Indonesia.

Abstract
Slow but sure, the feminist movement take its own place on society. Feminist
struggle in defending human‟s right in many ways, one of it, being the
representation to express people feeling about their environmental damage.
Patmi is one among those that have begun to take a stand on the women‟s
movement, one of the protesters against Cement Factory build in Kendeng
Mountain. She is a protester‟s against the construction of a cement factory
belonging to state cement maker Semen Indonesia, that has been passed away
while struggling the human‟s right. The paper would like to portray feminism by

main objective on my present study is analysis conceptual essence feminism
theoretically in brief and connect it to the hegemony, and Padmi represent it.

I. INTRODUCTION
Indonesia is a vast developing
country which have a lot of natural
resource. People depending on the nature
cultivation and become the main
economic sources they got their life
earning from. In our modern societies
there are many ways of realize the
environmental things around us. It is
important to consider the way we connect
with nature. Modernization brings us
away from the earth. The rising of
pollution has made people all over the
world suffering the consequences of
industrial revolution.
With the changes in women‟s
socio-economic status and political
context, the feminist movement spread
widely from the early 1990s centering on
cultural and art areas. It is now free for
women voices her thoughts, and women were endowed with right to brought
people aspiration on her struggle. There
were no contradictory positions about the
way feminism becomes part of popular
culture in Indonesia. For the Patmi death
on 2017 was one of the turning point of
feminism struggle against hegemony in
this country.
The subject and issues
surrounding feminism on hegemony
constructed as we see on the mass media
nowadays. They have been exist from
time to time by multi aspects such as
social, cultural, and scientific studies. The
idea of feminism designation and images
vary but the original connotation remain
the same: the gender equality.
According to this point of view,
the writer would like to explore Patmi -
women struggle on hegemony vortex-
content generated about the feminist on
hegemony that portrayed by Patmi.
Before discussing the feminist struggle, it
is necessary to review feminism and the
theoretical perspective guiding this study.
II. THEORETICAL STUDY
Feminism
Feminism etimologically derived
from famme (woman). The term of
Universitas Muria Kudus SEMAI (Seminar Masyarakat Ilmiah) I 2018
“Mengungkap Kebenaran melalui Linguistik Forensik” ∣ 20
feminism used to be related with woman
equality. The term has been used for a
century. Women called themselves
feminist to adressed woman who fight for
women‟s right. They brag about the same
right within economic, political, and
social rights and opportunities.
Feminism includes a variety of
perspectives and ideas. It is not easy to
define because the the vary assumptions
within feminism. Feminists believe that
women‟s experiences, concerns, and ideas
are as valuable as those of men. Woman
should be treated with equal seriousness
and respect. Feminism movement was
started in 1920.
The idea of feminism is about
equality. Rebecca West (1913)
explanation on herself, "I myself have
never been able to find out precisely what
feminism is: I only know that people call
me a feminist whenever I express
sentiments that differentiate me from a
doormat, or a prostitute." Feminism, at
that time, brings the idea of woman are
oppressed in society and that such
mistreatment of women should be
eleminated.
There are many ways to describe
feminism that emerged since 1960s. To
sum up, the kinds of feminism are: liberal
feminism, radical feminism, marxist and
socialist feminism, cultural feminism, and
eco-feminism.
Liberal feminism is the variety of
feminism that put women on the structure
of society to integrate women on the
structure. Its start when Abigail Adams
and Mary Wollstonecraft proposing
equality for women during the American
Revolution.
Radical feminism provides an
important foundation. It is actually the breeding ground for many of the ideas of
feminism that shaped in various ways by
other branches of feminism. Radical
feminism arouse approximately at 1967.
The reason this group gets the "radical"
label is that they see the women
oppression as the fundamental form of
oppression.
Marxist and Socialist Feminism
are closely related. Marxism recognizes
that women are oppressed, while socialist
feminism is the result of Marxism
meeting radical feminism. Women also
attributes the oppression to the capitalist
property system, they insist that the only
way to end the oppression of women is to
overthrow the capitalist system. Marxists
and socialists often call themselves
"radical," but they use the term to refer to
the economic system.
As a movement of radical
feminism fade away, cultural feminism
got rolling. In fact, many of the same
people moved from the former to the
latter. They carried the name "radical
feminism" with them, and some cultural
feminists still use that name.
Eco-Feminism is more spiritual.
Its basic tenet is that a patriarchal society
will exploit its resources without regard to
long term consequences. In resisting
patriarchal culture, eco-feminists feel that
they are resisting to something that
destroying the Earth, and vice-versa.
Hegemony
Hegemony can be roughly defined
as the whole practical strategies field that
used by the dominant group to get the
consent of subordinate class to conform to
its rule. According to Gitlin, hegemony is
“the systematic (but not necessarily
intentional or generally not intentional)
direction of mass consent to the existing
rule”. Dominators operate hegemony
through ideology. However, hegemony is
not given and constant; it could be lost. In
Gramsci‟s approach, hegemony is related with civil society.
According to Hall (1977: 331 –
332), hegemony refers to a situation in
which a provisional alliance of certain
social groups can exert “total social

“Mengungkap Kebenaran melalui Linguistik Forensik” ∣ 21
authority” over other subordinate groups
only by “winning and shaping consent so
that the power of the dominant class
appears both legitimate and natural.” The
hegemonic system allows space for the
expression of the subordinates.
Nevertheless, popular aspirations and
values tend to be taken into account by
dominant groups and addressed so that
they are assimilated in terms compatible
with the hegemonic ideology.
Context
The construction of cement
factories in the Kendeng Mountains,
Central Java, has brought a movement
among the people who live there.
Kendeng Mountains is a mountain range
that encompasses a number of municipal
districts within Central Java. The
Kendeng mountain range is a karst region
made up largely of limestone. The range
contains numerous underground rivers,
springs and reservoirs which are of key
importance to the region's agriculture
industry. For cement corporations, the
Kendeng Mountains are a prime location
to build factories because of the
abundance of limestone and water sources
available there. Both limestone and water
are key ingredients in cement production.
The grass roots action in
protesting the cement factories building
has been have a long series of protests
until one of the protesters passed away
while waiting for their aspiration to be
heard by the President. 55 brave men and
women from the Kendeng Mountains
lived with their legs encased in cement
blocks for eight days. Those protesters
each day gathering in front of the
Presidential Palace in Jakarta. The tragic
death of Patmi whose passed away in the early hours of Tuesday (21 March 2017)
morning on her way to a hospital after a
suspected heart attack, would not be
forgotten.
The commissioner from the
National Commission on Violence
Against Women (Komnas Perempuan)
has honored the dedication and sacrifice
of Patmi and urged the state to recognize
the women human rights defenders of
Kendeng who have for years been
struggling peacefully to protect their land.
Patmi has been involved in the
anti-cement movement since 2006 and
was on the front line of a similar
demonstration in April 2016, a
demonstration that saw a group of nine
women called the Kartinis of Kendeng (in
reference to the Indonesian national
heroine) cement their feet in front of the
Palace. This protest eventually resulted in
a meeting with President Joko Widodo
after which the president ordered a halt to
the construction of cement plants while a
strategic environmental assessment is
carried out in the Kendeng region. Those
explained why Patmi is the best portray
for woman that struggle against
hegemony, that is the basic reason to
compiled paper entitled „Patmi: woman
struggle on hegemony vortex‟.
III. METHOD
The subject of research is Padmi
as one of woman from Kendeng
Mountains, Central Java, who passed
away during Cements Protester in
Presidential Palace Jakarta. The paper
highlighting the feminism on hegemony
in Padmi death. The paper falls into a
descriptive analysis on feminism.
IV. DISCUSSION
What would you do if you found
out that all of your mountain were
scheduled to be cut down into cement
industrial. Your main water source will contaminated. As a people who stay you
would organize a group to fight the
problem and prevent more damage from
happening. Environmentalism and non-
violent resistance are two legacies of the

“Mengungkap Kebenaran melalui Linguistik Forensik” ∣ 22
people from Kendeng. They continue in
the current struggle to preserve their lands
and livelihoods through strategic,
peaceful acts of defiance.
Patmi and her community has
forged alliances with civil society groups,
launched social media campaigns and
hold a permanent protest tent near the site
of the factory in Rembang. Those are their
political struggle to prevent the cement
factories. Kendeng people were afraid that
the construction of cement factories
would reduce vital underground water
sources and reduce the soil fertility which
is necessary for farmers' livelihoods. The
dust exposure would cause medical
problems including lung function
impairment, chronic obstructive lung
disease, pneumoconiosis and carcinoma.
But Ganjar Pranowo as the
Governor of Central Java, issued a new
granting permission for construction to
continue and it were moved into a widely
controversy that some critics said the
permit violates national law. So then the
construction building progressed and the
factory is reportedly 98 percent complete.
Total investments on the project amount
to nearly Rp 5 trillion.
The hegemony wins and the
community urged the government to stop
the cement factory by held a
demonstration on gathering in front of the
Presidential Palace in Jakarta. The anti-
cement protesters had been largely led by
women known as the "Kartinis of
Kendeng". It was the nine woman that
gained the president‟s attention on April
2017 after spending 36 hours with their
feet in cement blocks and women who
have continuously put the protest tents
near the factory site in Rembang.
The women oppression showed in a report released by the National
Commission on Violence Against Women
at 2016 noted that women rights in defend
the Kendeng Mountains have faced multi-
layered gender-based violence. We can
see the women as the feminist that
struggling in defending their nature on the
hegemony vortex surround them. The
violence including physical violence from
security force and it really happened to
them. There were also threats from armed
gangsters and psychological abuse from
police.
The Kendeng region residents are
split between supporters and opponents of
the cement factories that has caused
tensions in communities. Patmi is one of
the protesters that fight for their nature.
She is one of Kendeng Mountains
residence. Though women that are
actively taking part in the protection of
environment are still low, Patmi and her
collegues fight so that the Cement
Industries would not build at Kendeng
Mountain.
Patmi is the heroine of Kendeng
Mountain based on feminism perspective.
The opinion that women have the same
right with men, they are working and
living, fighting for life too. Historically
there are few woman that fight for human
rights, and it is not about biological sex
difference. Thus it may be suggested, that
in some cultural and historical moments
women position are on the hegemony
vortex, especially for Patmi. However,
this remains a point about mother-earth
conception, since it is still framed within a
dualistic discourse that retains a
separation between culture (humans) and
nature. On the environmental movement
that lacked feminist, especially in
Indonesia, Patmi is one of the heroine.
Moreover she fight for her place until her
last breath depicting the women portray in
hegemony vortex and it could not be
separated from her strong feelings with
the nature she lived in.
