BORNEO GLOBAL ISSUES CONFERENCE 2018
Pulse environmental correspondent
For those of you who have never heard of the Borneo Global Issues Conference (BGIC), it is an annual event organised by Interna-
tional School Brunei which aims to give students the chance to become involved in making a difference to the world. Run along the
lines of the parliamentary procedures of the United Nations Organisation, the BGIC allows students to become diplomats for a week-
end, acting as representatives of all the member nations, and to debate issues that concern everyone in a number of forums. In the
process, the students are challenged to leave their comfort zones. And for those that can do this, the experience they gain from being
able to develop their ability to work together as well as to develop their leadership and interpersonal skills forms a vital part of their
preparation for their role as the open-minded leaders of the future.
The theme for this year’s BGIC, which was held from 9th -12th March, was Life Below Water and, following auditions, four students
— Geraldine Ting, AE 2; Puah Shi Min, AE 10; Rashiid bin Rosland, AE 10; Ak Muhammad Rulzaimi bin Pg Hj Ramlee, AE 13 —
were selected to represent PTES at the Conference. This was an opportunity that they seized with both hands and although none of
the resolutions that they were involved in drafting were passed, they can justifiably feel proud of the fact that they acquitted them-
selves well, especially Ak Muhd Rulzaimi who was voted Best Delegate of Political Forum 1.
The four students in question were invited to talk about their experience at the BGIC and this is what they said:
Geraldine Ting — Iceland, Human Rights Forum 2
BGIC was really eye opening. It shed light on many different global issues that need to be addressed — especially the ones that peo-
ple choose to turn a blind eye to. This whole experience has taught me a lot of things, ranging from gaining confidence when speak-
ing in front of a large audience to being able to think critically and solve the issues at hand. Although the mere thought of BGIC may
seem daunting to some, it is not really that bad. I admit that there were some sleepless nights while I was trying to resolve problems
and finishing speeches but, in the end, I still got through it.
All in all, BGIC was a truly amazing experience and I am forever thankful to have been given the opportunity of taking part in it.
Puah Shi Min — Greenland, Eco-Soc Forum 1
BGIC was undoubtedly the most fun-filled experience one could ever have from a conference. The weeks of stressed research lead-
ing up to the four days of the Conference become totally worthwhile as soon as the Conference officially starts. The adrenaline rush,
the friendships made, the people with mindsets that will leave you inspired and in awe — it is a truly beautiful idea to create aware-
ness of global issues among the youth of Brunei by encouraging them take part in solving the problems themselves through brain-
storming together in order to contribute to making the world a better place.
The theme of Life Under Water made me realise just how reliant humans are on the large body of water that we often treat as a place
for disposing of our waste simply because it is convenient. Now, we are desperately trying to save the oceans that would not have
needed saving if it was not for us. How many more places will we destroy before starting to appreciate their value?
Every student who took part in the BGIC entered it as themselves, debated as the delegate of a country, and left with a stronger pas-
sion to help the world.
Rashiid bin Rosland — Switzerland, Environment Forum 2
BGIC was a blast for me as I had never been to a debate conference of this caliber before. I felt so much pressure as I wanted to excel
as a delegate at this conference. This year’s theme was Life Under Water, and the Environment Forum I was assigned to focused spe-
cifically on the warming of the oceans and ocean acidification.
This topic was great for me as this issue is something that the world is currently trying to deal with. This therefore made my research
on the theme a lot easier and, as a science student, talking about the issue and the factors that contribute to it such as carbon dioxide
emissions, is familiar to me.
What was fantastic about the conference were the people. I had never seen so many hard-working, enthusiastic young people in one
room before. They put so much effort into their resolutions that that they hoped would be passed and debated by the United Nations.
Furthermore, as the school representative, I had the privilege of meeting Her Royal Highness, Princess Sarah. It was a humbling ex-
perience to meet a member of the Royal Family, and to hold a conversation with her.

BORNEO GLOBAL ISSUES CONFERENCE 2018
Ak Muhammad Rulzaimi bin Pg Hj Ramlee — Russia, Political Forum 1
I was stoked when I finally got the opportunity to take part in the BGIC as I missed that opportunity at my previous secondary
school. So, I am thankful to PTES for holding auditions for the BGIC.
During the training days prior to the actual event, I was met with friendly faces and various personalities from both the chairs and the
amazing delegates in my forum (Political Forum 1). The chairs were helpful and the other delegates were wonderful company.
During the actual event, I was exposed to the world of conference debates which was a very interesting experience: Alliances were
formed and (friendly) enemies made; the debates were heated and I was educated and brought up to date with current world problems
as the event and debates progressed.
All-in-all, BGIC gave me the opportunity to showcase my abilities in debating as well as polish up my public speaking skills. Not
only that, it also served as a platform for the youth to bring forth their opinions and solutions to current world problems while also
having fun doing so.
P.S. The food was amazing!

JA ASIA PACIFIC COMPANY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION
Cikgu Lim Sze Yee
During the first term holidays a party of four Business Studies students from PTES, accompanied by their chaperone Cikgu Lim Sze
Yee, took part in the finals of the Junior Achievement Asia Pacific Company of the Year Competition in Beijing.
Junior Achievement is one of the largest global NGOs dedicated to addressing the fundamental social and economic challenges faced
by young people today, by educating and empowering them to transform their futures and become the instruments in determining
their economic success, and this year JA China was celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The four students in question – Mark Kevin Diwa Pea of AE 4; AE 8 student Ho Jye Jing; Valerie Law Wei Lyng of AE 10; and AE
12 representative Dk Hanisah Syakirah binti Pg Abd Rahim – won the right to compete in the final during a qualifying competition
held at the end of last year.
In the qualifying competition the PTES team, going by the name of PTES JA Co, were up against some tough opposition in the form
of student companies from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Tutong and Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, but managed to win over
the judges by presenting a product that was simplicity itself.

JA ASIA PACIFIC COMPANY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION
The product that won PTES JA Co the chance to go to Beijing from 28th March – 2nd April was stickers. The stickers that were made
were special as they allowed the PTES team to raise awareness of some of the problems the younger generation is facing.
The stickers focused on raising awareness of three main problems – cyber security, health, and the environment. The choice of stick-
ers was decided upon as it was felt they would allow the team to help build a better world one sticker at a time.
During the presentation in Beijing, everyone in the company felt nervous as they had to present the product in front of a huge crowd.
It was a very nerve-racking experience but the team persevered and managed to see it through.
The next day, the challenge for the PTES JA Co was to sell their stickers at a trade fair. The students managed to sell a lot of stickers
and, at the same time, were able to tell customers something about Brunei.
Going to Beijing was an amazing experience for the entire company. The team learned many things about the rich culture and history
Beijing has to offer, especially on their excursions to the Great Wall of China and Nanluoguxiang.
The Great Wall of China needs no introduction, but Nanluoguxiang is less well-known. It is a narrow alley that gives its name to an
old part of the Beijing city centre that is a mix of both traditional and modern architecture The alley acts as a type of night market
where locals and tourists can buy traditional food.
Another thing that proved to be an eye opening experience was that the PTES students had to interact with teams from 16 different
countries. Not only did they get to know their respective cultures, but they also made lifelong friends.
In summary, even though PTES JA Co did not win the competition, the students had the privilege of being able to travel to and com-
pete in Beijing as finalists. In addition, JA gave them the chance to put all the theories they have learned in their Business Studies
lessons into practice.

UPPER SIXTH PHYSICS HOTS UP
Pulse education correspondent
Before reaching for a fire extinguisher, let me reassure readers that the school is not on fire in any literal sense. Instead, the title of
this article refers to the activities taking place in the Physics Department in their efforts to turn PTES students into individuals capa-
ble of thinking for themselves.
In keeping with the aims of Wawasan 2035, students are no longer expected to be passive recipients of the knowledge dispensed by
teachers, but active participants in the education process. In other words, they are called upon to think critically about what they are
studying.
Otherwise known as higher order thinking skills (HOTS), this way of thinking does not come naturally to every student, so it is the
job of teachers to devise activities which will provide their charges with the opportunity to develop this particular skill.
One such teacher who is leading the way is Cikgu Abdul Razak bin Ali of the Physics Department. Towards the end of last term, his
students were seen wandering about the school during their PS blocks in their efforts to answer a series of problems, with the help of
a few clues, that were all carefully designed to encourage them to use their higher order thinking skills.
Asked whether any of the students had managed to solve all the problems, Cikgu Abdul Razak explained: “The aim of the exercise
was not so much about answering all the questions correctly. Rather, it was about encouraging the students to think outside the box.
The answers that they gave me was proof of this, so I consider that the exercise was a success.”
Cikgu Dr. Awg Hj Makarimi bin Hj Awg Kasim, Head of Physics, was also invited to comment on the activity and to explain why it
was not open to all the Physics students: “The problem solving exercise was only intended as an experiment, in order to ascertain
how well the students would respond. Now that we know what they are capable of, we will conduct similar activities with all the
Physics students,” he stated.
Below are the problems that were given to Cikgu Abdul Razak’s upper sixth Physics students so that readers can test their own men-
tal faculties. Answers in next issue:

CHILL PHILL LEAVE OPPOSITION OUT IN THE COLD
Pulse sports correspondent
A futsal tournament was held at PTES on 15th March, 2018.
The Futsal Club committee (made up of club president Muhd
Nasrullah bin Awg Hj Puzian; vice presidents Muhammad Ab-
dul Wafi bin Saharudin and Md Zamri bin Zainal; Muhd Ehsan
Haneef bin Khairil, who was the secretary; and Md Fakhrul Razi
bin Haji Samsor, the treasurer) had two main aims when organis-
ing this event – to scout for talented futsal and football players,
so that they can represent PTES in future competitions, and to
raise money for some needy PTES students. The money was
raised by means of an entry fee of $5.00 for each of the teams
that took part in the tournament.
Seven teams took part in the competition which was held in the
Multi-Purpose Hall from 2.45 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. The teams were
Panthers, BB Team, Selungsong A, Selungsong B, Chill Phill,
Super Strika and Lagenda.
Following a league format, with each team having to play six matches, expectations were high that this would be a very closely con-
tested tournament. However, it turned out to be something of a stroll in the park for Chill Phill as they notched up a massive 16
points, failing narrowly to make it a perfect six out of six when they were held to a draw by BB Team. Runners-up were Selangsong
B, with 9 points and, one point behind, in third place, were Selungsong A. And just to emphasise Chill Phill’s overall dominance, Hj
Burhanuddien bin Hj Suhaimi of BE 1 was voted Best Player of the Tournament and was also joint top scorer of the competition
along with Muhd Khairul Zulkharnain bin Hj Bujang of Chill Phill (orange shirts with black stripes) took top honours Lagenda
and Md Fakhrul Razi bin Haji Samsor, the captain of Panthers.
Head of the PTES Football Club, Cikgu Pg Muhd Mukmin Abd Latif bin Pg Hj Hamzah, was an interested spectator at the event and
was left feeling optimistic about what he saw: “There are some very talented players at PTES, and if they train hard and work togeth-
er as a team, then there is no reason why they can’t win some silverware just like previous PTES teams,” he suggested.
