    CHAPTER 2

    RESEARCH DESIGN

  • 8/8/2019 Yakoob Rm Project

    15/33

    MEANING OF RESEARCH

Research is a common parlance, refers to search of knowledge. One can also

define research as a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a

specific topic. Research is an academic activity and as such the term should be used in

technical sense. According to Cluffared Woody Research comprises defining andredefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggesting solutions, collecting,

organizing and evaluating data making deduction and reaching conclusions, at least

carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating

hypothesis. Thus research is an original contribution to the existing stock of knowledge

making its advancement further. It is the pursuit of truth with the help of study,

observation, comparison and experiment. In short the search of knowledge through

objective and systematic method of finding solutions of problem of research.

There are different types of research:1) Descriptive research.2) Analytical research.3) Fundamental research.4) Applied research.5) Quantitative research.6) Qualitative research.7) Conceptual research.8) Empirical research.

In this project Descriptive research is used. Research includes surveys and fact

finding enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is

description of state of affairs as it exists at present. The main characteristic of his

method is that researcher has no control over the variable; he can only report what

has happened or what is happening? In descriptive research (the research method

to collect the information) survey method of all kinds are used, which include

comparative survey method and correlation method i.e. Income structure,

    purchasing, habits etc.

The research process includes following steps:

o Formulating the research problem.o Preparing the research design.o Determining the sample design.o Collecting the datao Analysis of data.o Hypothesis testing.o Generalizations and interpretation.

    16/33

    SAMPLE SURVEY

    SURVEY:

Any project requires an adequate and reliable data. There are two methods of collectingthe information:-

    1. Study of the entire population ( census ):Here the survey is conducted on each and every unit of the population.

Greater accuracy may be ensured, but it requires more efforts, consumes more time

and requires more funds. In some cases the census method becomes a necessity but

most of the times another method viz. the sampling technique is preferred.

    2. Sampling technique:It is the method in which only a part of the population is taken into

consideration. This method not only requires less time but also is economical. It gives

reliable results. On the basis of the sample study we can predict and generalize the

    behaviour of the mass phenomenon.

Before conducting a sample survey, we have to decide first what exactly has to

be sampled. For this purpose entire population is divided into parts called as sampling

units. These units must cover the whole of the population and they must not overlap, in

the sense that every element in the population belongs to one and only one. A statistical

survey may either general or special purpose survey. In a general purpose survey we

may obtain data which are useful for several purposes. A special purpose survey is that

in which data obtained are useful in analyzing a particular problem only.

    PLANNING OF THE SURVEY

Quality of survey results depends considerably on proper planning of the survey. The

following steps have to be undertaken before the survey is conducted.

o Specification of the purpose.o Scope of the survey: Three factors exert great influence on the scope.o Object of enquiry.o Availability of time.o Availability of resources.o Unit of data collection.o Sources of data.o Techniques of data collection.o Census technique.o Sampling technique.o Frame: Refers to the listing of all units in a population under study.o Degree of accuracy desired.

  • 8/8/2019 Yakoob Rm Project

    17/33

    DESIGNING THE SURVEY

This is the most important step in planning a sample survey. It includes:o Deciding whether unrestricted random sample or variant of it should be usedo Preparing Questionnaireo The design should take into account available resources and the time limit if any,

    besides the accuracy desired

o Selection of suitable sample size

    ANALYSIS AND REPORTING

    It consists of following steps:

Scrutiny of the data: The filled-in questionnaires should be carefully scrutinized to find

out, whether the data furnished is reliable and mutually consistent.

Tabulation of data: The entire data is tabulated for quick references.

Statistical analysis: The statistical analysis is carried out to estimate characteristics.

Reporting: A report should incorporate a detailed statement regarding all stages of

survey and should present all statistical information collected in a neat tabulated form.

The data should be properly interpreted and recommendations should be made.

    DESIGNING OF QUESTIONNAIRE

Questionnaire forms the very basic block of any survey. Once the subject of the

project was finalized, the next challenge was to design a good and efficient

questionnaire. The points to be included in the project were listed down and the

questionnaire was prepared in such a way that we could know maximum of what the

consumers prefer and expect from a fast food joint.

A very wide range of subjects could be incorporated in the questionnaire but it

has to be precise. So some of the important questions were short listed and the

    following questionnaire was prepared.

  • 8/8/2019 Yakoob Rm Project

    18/33

The questions were grouped into categories like personal information like what

they feel about library overall, its service and management and their likes and dislikes

    about the same.

    DATA COLLECTION

Data collection forms an important step in preparing a project. Utmost care must

be taken while collecting data because data constitutes the foundation on which the

superstructure of statistical analysis is built. The results obtained from the analysis of

the data should be reliable enough, so that further policy decisions are possible.

While deciding the method of data collection to be used, one should keep in

mind, two types of data viz.

    y Primary datay Secondary data

Before collecting primary data, it is desirable that one should go through the

existing literature and learn what is already known of the general area in which the

specific problem falls and all surrounding information that may give leads and lessons.

This helps in avoiding duplications of efforts and waste of resources.

    i) Primary DataPrimary data are obtained by a study, specifically designed to fulfill the

data needs of the problems at hand. Primary data may be collected by personal

interview, observation, questionnaire, schedules etc. Such data are original in

character and are generated in large number of surveys conducted mostly by the

government and also by some individual institutions and research bodies.

y MERITS1. Primary sources show data in greater detail.2. It frequently includes definitions of terms and units used.3. It often includes a copy of the schedule and he description of the procedure

used in selecting the sample and in collecting the data.

    4. The secondary source may contain mistakes.

  • 8/8/2019 Yakoob Rm Project

    19/33

    ii ) Secondary Data:

Data which is not originally collected but rather obtained from published or

unpublished sources are known as secondary data. These data are those which have

already been passed through the statistical process.

It constitutes the chief material on the basis of which statistical work is carried out in

    many investigations.

y MERITS1. Secondary data are much quicker to obtain than the primary data.2. It may be available on some subjects where it would be impossible to

    collect primary data.

    3. It is highly convenient to use information which someone else hascompiled.

y DEMERITS1. There is a problem in finding the data sufficiently accurate.

    2. It is difficult to find the data which exactly fits the need of

    the project.

    METHODS OF COLLECTING PRIMARY DATA

    Observation method

    Interview method

    Direct personal interview

    Indirect oral interview

    Questionnaire method

    Other methods

The method of collecting the data for this survey was primary i.e. questionnaire method.

Sample size = 29Age between 20 years to 24 years.

The survey was taken in the class of MBA 1st

    year in SITRC.
