REFLECTION LGA For LGA 3103 Stories for Young Learners, we were assigned to present a storytelling session in the classroom. My partner and I have chosen a story entitled The Fisherman and His Wife. The whole process of developing and carrying out the storytelling session was a great experience and a good exposure for me. The task assigned was very beneficial for me as it has helped me learnt so many things on how to planned and present a storytelling session. My storytelling partner Derek, has also helped a lot in making this storytelling presentation to be successful. Before the storytelling session started, my partner and I did some awesome jingle by playing the guitar to introduce the story to the audience. Amazingly, they responded very well by giving us a huge a round of applause to our entrance. At that time, I have learnt that the element of music is indeed important in getting the audience to be amused or perhaps to drag their attention better in listening to our story. With the music going on, we managed to structure the atmosphere so that everyone could get into the mood and it will help them to see, hear and understand the story better. After our storytelling session begins, I have helped my partners to handle the props while he was conducting the storytelling. This has really taught me of how I need to cooperate to my partner as a team in order to ensure that the storytelling session went on without any interruptions. The session went on and as it reaches my part, I was feeling a little bit shaky and quite nervous at first. However, I managed to get a hold of my feet and started to get into action. During the session, I have paid a close look at my voice projection and my intonation to make sure that both are running well. Through the session, I have realised that a storyteller must always kept the dynamics of their intonation so that the story presented would not sounded monotonous. Apart from that, he also shall maintain the strength of his voice projection throughout the show regardless of his singing or speaking. These two techniques are very vital in getting demand for respect and attention, such as when a teacher is talking to the class, or simply to be heard clearly. It really helps the teacher to get in control over his students. Other than that, l has also learnt that as an actor, it is important that the sound pattern of phrases and sentences produced to be maintained according to the pitch variation in the voice so that it would be more interesting and lively.Based on the feedback received from my audience, I have done pretty well in engaging my audience to my story. I have involved the listeners throughout the session so that they will feel much closer to the story that I have presented and to make the session more interactive. Personally, I felt that I could improve on this part. I realised that the response words that came out through my mouth was not as much as I have planned. Other aspect like chanting also should be reconsidered. Throughout the session, I was having a little bit of a problem to maintain my eyes contact with the audience. It makes me feel nervous. But then, the session has given me a life time exposure so that I would do better next time. Apart from that, the questions thrown out to the audience and the use of gestures and body motion also needed to be improved so that the listeners can understand the story better. The storytelling session also has made me realised the importance of making use of concrete objects and visuals representation of the story. By using a golden fish puppet for my story prop, I have managed to give the audience a clearer view of the story itself. By doing so, the audience has become more entertained through the visual representation of a fish in my show. I realised that the use of the concrete objects has help me in giving the audience a rough idea of what the story is all about. It is really important to insert this element in a storytelling session so that it would help the storyteller to create a mental configuration or structure wanted among the audience so that it would be easy for them to drag the audience deep and further into the story. The feedback given also has pointed out some of my weaknesses in presenting a story. Based on the feedback, I should make use more of the nonverbal language. I was not doing enough gestures throughout the show. Perhaps I could do better next time by practising more. Next, the pace of the story presented also has shown my weakness where I seldom use to pause between lines effectively. Hence, I have learnt to not memorize the storyline. Instead, I should have been more well-prepared and get to know the story much better so that I could present the story better without hesitate. Finally, I also need to state the source of the story so that it can serves as a guide to my audience. Luckily, at the end of the storytelling, I managed to convince the listener to the moral value of the story and how it relates to their everyday life. Other than that, my storytelling was done in a good way.All in all, the storytelling has really benefited me lot in many ways. It has helped me in shaping my character to become a good actor as well as a good teacher-trainee. It has taught me many lessons which can really guide me in my future career. I hope I can make use of the experience that I had in the future. It will surely help me a lot when Ill become a teacher in school.
