Unit ini membincangkan tentang ilmu ketamadunan yang mencakupi pengenalan ilmu ketamadunan, interaksi antara pelbagai tamadun Melayu, Cina dan India, Islam dalam Tamadun Melayu, Isu-isu kontemporari Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia, Islam Hadhari dan proses pembangunan negara. Objektif mata pelajaran ini ialah untuk memperkenalkan kepada pelajar tentang ilmu ketamadunan yang mencakupi pengenalan ilmu ketamadunan, interaksi antara pelbagai tamadun, Isu-isu kontemporari dan implikasinya kepada proses pembangunan Negara di samping melahirkan pelajar yang mempunyai sikap hormat menghormati, mengamalkan nilai-nilai murni dan mempunyai jati diri sebagai warganegara.

Workload requirements This is a three credit point unit with two hours face-to-face and online contact per week over 8 teaching weeks. This includes time spent in preparing for and completing assessment tasks, and time spent in general study, revision, and examination preparation.

Unit relationships This unit is a compulsory unit for all Malaysian students pursuing an undergraduate degree as stipulated in subsection 41 (4) Private Higher Education Act 1996 (Act 555). In relation to this, Department of Higher Education, Malaysian Ministry of Education Administrative Circular JPT / GS1000-606 JLD.1 (25) dated 27 June 2013 provided further explanation on the implementation of General Studies in a public or private higher education institutions. All Malaysian students are compelled to enrol, undertake, attend and pass this unit as a pre-requisite to the award of a degree.

Attendance policy Attendance will be recorded, monitored and reported strictly for every student in each unit enrolled and undertaken manually and / or electronically through various reporting platforms. A Malaysian student enrolled in General Studies (GS) U1 units are required to attend a minimum of 80% of the scheduled face-to-face and online

lecture sessions. Failure in achieving minimum percentage of attendance may result in student being barred for Final Examination or any other penalties recommended to be imposed by the General Studies Office.

Late comers or absent for face-to-face lectures may not be permitted to enter the lecture as well as incompletion of any online learning activities prescribed shall be marked as Absent – No reason (AN).

Original medical certificates issued by certified and approved medical practitioners are required to be produced to the General Studies Office in order to be deemed as Absent – Other (AO).

Learning and Teaching ApproachThis unit will be taught as a combination of online lecture and face-to-face lecture each week for at least 8 weeks. All students in this unit are expected to develop the independent learning skills required for university study and professional life.

All students must ensure they have access to the resources required for successful completion of this unit. The minimum resources required for this unit include the following:

Internet access for accessing Moodle and online materials; Computer / laptop / tablet / mobile phones to access Moodle and watch online videos; Good, above average high quality headphones or earbuds for audio listening; Other related resources such as handouts provided by the lecturer, the unit’s Moodle site, and

academic articles from the Monash library databases and other related and required information.

This unit adopts learning and teaching approaches that is both student-centred and research-led. A student-centred approach places students at the centre of the learning process, allowing and equipping them to learn about Islamic and Asian Civilizations through the learning materials and assessment tasks. Research-led teaching complements this approach by facilitating students‟ understanding and experience of research and its contribution to the knowledge that underpins Islamic and Asian Civilizations.

Feedback to studentsIn accordance with the University procedures on Unit Assessment, students should receive feedback on student performance in examinations and other end-of-semester assessment.

Exam sightings for the General Studies (GS) units are held no later than 7 days after results have been published. Students are required to complete and submit a Request to Sight Examination Script form to the office. Students can collect this form from the office at their home campus.

There is no requirement or obligation that comments will be provided when students view their exam script.

Scripts subject to an appeal shall be retained for one month after conclusion of the appeal or six months after notification of results - whichever is the greater.

Extensions and penaltiesLate submissions will attract penalties. An assessment item that is submitted after the due date and without an agreed extension will attract a penalty of FIVE (5) points per calendar day overdue. The Unit Coordinator & Lecturer, may, at their discretion, grant an extension of up to TWO (2) calendar days. No assessment item can be accepted if it is more than THREE (3) calendar days overdue.

It is suggested that you plan on submitting the assignment before the due date to cover any unexpected delays you may encounter in finalising and completing the assignment. Excuses such as those relating to computer breakdowns or competing work commitments are not acceptable. Students are advised to save to your hard drive as you work through your assignments and to keep a soft copy on USB / CD etc for safekeeping.
