Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said as a member of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)'s executive board, Malaysia hoped to be able to contribute more at the international stage. In his Facebook account today, he said: "Malaysia has just been elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the period 20152019. "I see this as a recognition of our progress in education, science and culture and we hope to be able to contribute more at the international stage." Malaysia has been elected to UNESCO's executive board for the 20152019 term, after garnering the highest votes among AsiaPacific countries. The result was announced at the 12th Plenary Meeting of the 38th General Conference on Wednesday (Nov 11) in Paris, France. Malaysia received 165 votes, followed by Vietnam (156); Sri Lanka (149), Korea (137); Pakistan (135) and Iran (128). Malaysia was also elected to the InterGovernmental Council (IGC) for Information For All Programmes (IFAP) under the organisation's Communication and Information Commission. The role of the IGC, among others, are to check and assess achievements and determine the basic areas which need improvement in international cooperation, as well as support fundraising efforts for IFAP.
