Celebrating Buddha on Wesak Day

4 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MEI 20143 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MEI 2014

Gathering to chant and pray is an important part of a traditional Wesak celebration. It is said that Wesak is that time of the Full Moon in May in which the Christ gathers

the entire Spiritual Hierarchy together in meditation to invoke the forces of Shambhalla, a kingdom hidden somewhere in Inner Asia or the Buddhist Pure Land. The Buddha, representing those forces, appears and blesses humanity. Wesak Day is also celebrated by Buddhists all over the world and is known by the name of Puja or Buddha Purnima Visakah in India, Visak in Singapore, Visakha Bucha in Thailand, and Wesak in Sri Lanka.Devotees will begin the celebrations usually before dawn, where they will gather at temples. The Buddhist flag will be hoisted and hymns in praise of the holy triple gem namely, The Buddha (Pioneer), The Dharma (teachings) and The Sangha (disciples) will be sung. Simple offerings such as flowers are also brought to the temple while devotees pray using candles and joss-sticks.Besides using them for prayers, these items are also significant in the Buddhist teaching as it teaches the devotees about the non-permanence of life. Like a flower that will wither in due time or candles that will eventually burn out so is that of life which is subjected to destruction and decay. Before the actual day of the celebration the devout Buddhists will eat a vegetarian diet so that they will be cleansed and purified. Wesak Day is also where you will see many Malaysian Buddhists release animals such as pigeons and tortoises. This act is seen as a symbolic gesture of one releasing the soul and giving up the sins of the past. Besides that, this particular act is also seen as a way of giving freedom to those who are held against their will or are being tortured. Celebrating Wesak Day means bringing happiness to those who are less fortunate such as the elderly and the sick. Buddhists will usually conduct various charitable activities such as making donations and visiting orphanages and old folks home and helping out wherever they can. An interesting practice on this auspicious day involves the statue of a baby Buddha which is placed in a basin filled with water and decorated with flowers where devotees will then pour water over the statue. The act of pouring water over the statue is seen as a symbolic act of cleansing bad karma. The other significance of pouring water over the statue is to reenact the events following Buddha’s birth, when devas and spirits made heavenly offerings to him.

Wesak is a celebration not only of the birth of Buddhism’s founder, Sidharta, in 623 BC, but also the day that Sidharta became the Buddha in 588 BC at 35 years old and his eventual death at the age of 80.

Korea became a household name after Samsung, Hyundai and the infectious Oppa Gangnam Style brought the country into international focus. The capital city Seoul is the largest metropolis of Korea and is home to over 10 million citizens. Renamed after the independence of Korea in 1946, the word “seoul” is derived from a Korean word meaning “capital city”. Seoul is roughly divided into northern and southern halves by the Hangang River and is surrounded by vast mountains.

Visitors to Seoul have a lot to explore as this fast-paced and high tech city embraces both tradition and modernity, making it a very unique city.

GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE A must-see attraction is the Gyeongbokgung Palace. Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace was located at the heart of newly appointed capital of Seoul (then known as Hanyang) and represented the sovereignty of the Joseon Dynasty. The largest of five Grand Palaces (the others being Gyeonghuigung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace), Gyeongbokgung served as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty rulers.

NAMSANGOL HANOK VILLAGE Namsangol Hanok Village is a collection of five hanoks (traditional Korean houses) from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), recovered from different parts of the city and relocated to the northern foot of Namsan Mountain. The interiors of each of these five houses reflect owners from different walks of life, from the middle class to the yangban (who were mainly high government officials, noblemen and aristocrats).

NAMDAEMUN MARKETNamdaemun Market is the largest traditional market in Korea with over 10,000 stores that line the streets around Namdaemun (Gate), the main southern gate of the old city wall. It boasts one of the largest distribution structures in Korea, providing local products, daily living essentials, food products, souvenirs, medical supplies and more to retailers and consumers across the country. Namdaemun Market is also packed with interesting things to see and eat, making it a popular destination for both locals and international visitors alike.

DONGDAEMUN MARKETDongdaemun Market is a large commercial district comprised of traditional markets and shopping centers that cover the entire area around Dongdaemun (Gate), a prominent landmark in Korea. It is Korea’s largest wholesale and retail shopping district featuring 26 shopping malls, 30,000 specialty shops, and 50,000 manufacturers. All kinds of goods can be found here including silks and fabric, clothes, shoes and accessories, electronics, leather goods, sporting goods, office supplies, pet products and toys.

NAMI ISLANDNami Island is a must visit for tourists. This romantic island is 63 km away from Seoul. Nami Island is famous for its beautiful Korean pine tree lands and the shooting location for Korea’s most famous drama, “Winter Sonata”. Nami Island was formed as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam. It is a half-moon shaped isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against rebels of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo.

N SEOUL TOWERKorea’s first integrated transmission tower beaming television and radio broadcasts across the capital is a much-loved Seoul landmark. It is a popular place to unwind for locals and tourists alike and has become famous for its “Locks of Love” where thousands of padlocks attached to the fence by romantic Seoulites symbolize their undying affection.

“Bumbu Kito” is one of the food stalls located at Pagoh Rest and Service Area (Southbound) and arguably the most popular too. The reason? Patrons swear it serves the best Nasi Ambang ever! Not surprisingly, this stall has its own followers who are willing to make that journey on the North-South Expressway just to whet their appetite on this traditional food. The dish which originally hails from Indonesia is a mixture of rice and fried noodles with other side dishes such as fried chicken, salted fish and coconut “serunding”. Customers attest that Bumbu Kito serves the true taste of Nasi Ambang, and this is even endorsed

by Ramli Sarip, Malaysia’s favorite Father of Rock, who waxes lyrical about the dish. So on your next travel down south, make sure you head for Pagoh RSA and try the authentic taste of Nasi Ambang Bumbu Kito.
