MOA SIGNED FOR MJIIT’S COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL CHENG KUNG

UNIVERSITY TAIWAN

Kuala Lumpur, 17 May 2017 : A memorandum of agreement was today signed for collaborative research and partnership

between Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology

(MJIIT) through the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Center (DPPC) with Disaster Prevention Education Center (DPEC),

National Cheng Kung University Taiwan (NCKU). According to Professor Datin Dr Rubiyah Yusof, Dean of MJIIT, the MoA should

enrich the academic and research expertise in various disaster-related studies leveraging on its disaster risk management

framework and collegial partnership among national and

international collaborators. In the signing, NCKU was represented by Professor Dr Chjeng-Lun Shieh, Director of DPEC.

The MoA was signed during the International Symposium on Disaster Risk Management 2017 which was

attended by representatives from University of Tsukuba, Japan; National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan;

University of Yamaguchi, Japan and University Gadjah Mada, Indonesia at Dewan Seminar, Menara Razak UTM Kuala Lumpur.

About 100 participants representing various government sectors including MJIIT’s local stakeholders

attended the symposium, which focuses on Capacity Building in Disaster Risk Management through

Training, Research and Field Practices. The local presence comprises of representatives from National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), Civil Defense Force (APM), Ministry of Education, Public Work

Department (JKR), Malaysia Meteorological Department, Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG), Fire and Rescue Department, NAHRIM, other Federal- and State government agencies related to disaster

management, local government agencies, non-governmental organizations and funding agencies including

JICA.

YBhg Datuk Seri Ir Dr Zaini Ujang, Secretary General, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) in his keynote address encouraged all participants to actively participate in public engagement

initiatives to protect the environment particularly the rivers that are highly subjected to natural disaster

such as monsoonal flood, as part and parcel to environmental sustainability solutions. In addition, Tuan Haji Norhafifi Haji Ismail,

The symposium featured two specialized sessions namely the Role of Science and Technology for Strengthening Disaster Risk Management and a Focus-Group Session on Identifying Regional Capacity

The 3rd Alumni Meeting of MJIIT took place at UTM Satellite

Office at Meiji University in Tokyo on

18th May. This MJIIT Dousoukai (Alumni Meeting) has been organized

by Meiji University students who stud-ied at MJIIT.

Main members are the

students and teachers who studied or

taught at MJIIT and returned to Japan. Anyone who is interested in

MJIIT can also be a member.

At this Dousoukai, President Mr. Kinoshita who was Deputy Dean of MJIIT, President Mr. Tsuchiya of

Meiji University and President Mr. Miki of TCU as well as JICA Senior Vice President Ms. Suzuki gave speeches. Both Malaysian and Japanese graduates of MJIIT as well as a Japanese teacher who came back

recently to Japan spoke about their experiences and merits of having studied or taught at MJIIT. This time about 40 members gathered and enjoyed conversations over food and beverages. Master of Ceremony

was Prof. Horie, UTM Distinguished Ambassador at MJIIT.

UTM-JAPAN SATELLITE OFFICE AT MEIJI UNIVERSITY

The UTM-Japan Satellite Office at Meiji University in Tokyo which was opened in 2010 has been frequented by

many dignitaries including Minister of Higher Education, Dato

Sri Idris Jusoh and Science Advisor to the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid.

Former UTM Vice Chancellor Dato Sri Zaini Ujang and

current UTM Vice Chancellor Dato Wahid Omar as well as MJIIT Dean Datin Rubiyah Yusof have also visited the Office

many times.

Recently in May 2017, Datin Rubiyah had interviewed

at this Satellite Office Malaysian students studying at Japanese Universities based in Tokyo suburban area.

Also in July 2017, UTM students from Razak School were invited by Ambassador Masahiko Horie, UTM

Distinguished Ambassador at MJIIT to visit this Satellite Office and had discussions with Meiji University students who were

taught by Prof. Horie.

Ambassador Horie is the Professor in charge of this

Satellite Office and you are always welcome to the Office. Ambassador Horie was appointed as Special Advisor to the President of Meiji University from this year.

The intensive Management of Technology (MOT) training for Japanese

Fiscal Year (JFY) 2017 was successfully

organized during 31 July - 11 August 2017 at Malaysia-Japan International Institute of

Technology (MJIIT) with joint collaboration from Universiti Teknology Malaysia (UTM),

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The total 20 selected faculty staff

of JICA Project for AUN/SEED-Net Member Institutions (MI), whose age was under 35

years old with mixture of highest degrees ranging from master degree to doctoral

degree and diverse countries; Cambodia,

Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, attended MOT.

The course consisted of Intellectual Property, Innovation, Marketing integrated with Finance,

Industrial Visit, and Industrial Forum. The objective of the training was to enhance knowledge and capacity in making a collaboration with the industrial sector through research activities and to initiate

awareness of the importance of MOT and how it could enhance academic curricular among members of

the network.

Furthermore, the course ideally wishes all participants could virtually implement the knowledge learned from the course to bridge academic institution with private or public sector to conduct research

together which can solve issues currently faced in the actual society. - AUN/SEED-Net Website

Until August 2017, there are a few Japanese academic staff ended their duty at MJIIT. They are:

Their commitment and contribution to MJIIT are highly appreciated.

STAFF RETIREMENT

The participants of the MDRM 2016/2017 Japan Attachment Program completed their 2-week program in

Kanto (East Japan) and Kansai (West Japan) regions from

23 July - 5 August 2017.

Visits in Kanto area included University of Tsukuba, International Center for Water Hazards and Risk

Management (ICHARM), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and field work at Nikko Sabo Dam

and Kinugawa River Basin.

Visits in Kansai area included Disaster Prevention

Research Institute, Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, Osaka and Hyogo Prefecture Disaster Management Office, Disaster Research Institute (DRI), Hyogo Emergency Medical Center (HEMC) and field

work at Yodo River Basin.

The MDRM 2017/2018 full time students are also eligible to join the same attachment program in

summer of 2018 to get hands-on field experience from Japan in disaster risk reduction. - DPPC Website

The Joint Master Degree Programme (JMDP) between University of Tsukuba, Japan and MJIIT, UTM was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi Bin Ismail, Deputy Director General Of Higher Education

(Public Higher Education Institutions), Ministry of Higher Education.

The Joint Master Degree Programme (JMDP), a joint collaboration between Environmental Engineering

& Green Technology Department of MJIIT, UTM and Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences of University of Tsukuba, Japan through the Master’s program called Masters of Sustainability and

Environmental Sciences, which is an interdisciplinary study that stresses on the application of concepts

and methods from the physical, chemical and biological study of the environment. Upon completion of the program graduates will receive a single testamur

(certificate) conferred jointly by both Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and University of Tsukuba.

The programme is the first ever joint master degree approved by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science

and Technology (MEXT), Japan. The duration of the programme is two years where the students will spend 6

months in host university, 1 year in partner university and final 6 months in host university. Mode of program is

coursework (42 credits).

On 29 August, opening ceremony of MJIIT-Kyoto University JASTIP Disaster Prevention Joint Lab was held under the presence of Prof Kaoru Takara, Dean, Graduate School of Advanced Integrated

Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS), Kyoto University, Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi Bin Ismail, Deputy Director

General Of Higher Education (Public Higher Education Institutions), Ministry of Higher Education, Prof Datuk Ir Dr Wahid Omar Vice Chancellor of UTM and Prof. Dr. Kyosuke Nagata, President, University of

Tsukuba.

As the regional DRM hub for Japan-ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation Platform (JASTIP), it

is expected that collaborative activities in research and training will be further facilitated among the regional member institutions. - DPPC Website

THE 5TH MALAYSIA – JAPAN TRIBOLOGY SYMPOSIUM 2017

The 5th Malaysia – Japan Tribology Symposium (MJTS2017) was organized by Tribology and Precision

Machining i-Kohza (TriPrem), Malaysia Japan

International Institute Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with collaboration of

Malaysian Tribology Society (MYTRIBOS) and Japanese Society of Tribologists (JAST). The symposium was held

on 28th – 29th August 2017 at University Technology Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia sponsored by IHI

Corporation, Taat Bestari Sdn. Bhd., RGS Corporation

Sdn. Bhd., and Shinkawa Electric of Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

MJTS2017 had 2 keynote speeches by Prof. Dr. Hatsuhiko Usami from Meijo University, Japan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erween Bin Abd Rahim from Universiti

Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Malaysia, 21 poster presentations and 12 paper presentations in general

sessions.

An annual general meeting for MYTRIBOS was held as well as a meeting between JAST and MYTRIBOS to discuss future collaboration work

between these 2 societies. Lab tour to Tribology and Precision Machining

iKohza was arranged on the second day 29th Aug after all the paper presentation presented. TriPrem also organized poster competition in
