Broga is a small town that sits on the border of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia. It is situated 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Kuala Lumpur and approximately 33 kilometres (21 miles) from

Seremban, the capital of Negri Sembilan.

Broga Hill is frequented by casual hikers. It is approximately 400m in altitude and is easily climbed by

most people. The hilltop is unique as it is rather devoid of trees, which is an uncommon sight amongst tropical rainforest. Remnants of burnt out tree trunks indicate that the area may have been ravaged by a

forest fire and the trees did not grow back. It offers a good view of the surrounding area and has become a popular picnic and photography spot.

On the 8th March 2014, a total of forty (40) ESE students accompanied by two (2) officers participated in an expedition to Broga Hill organized by ELECSYS, MJIIT. The climb began at 4.30 am and

reached the top of the hill around 6.00 am. The students were able to watch the sunrise and capture the moment. The main objective of this expedition was to tighten the relationship between junior and senior

students on the ESE program and to expose students to nature.

ACADEMIC VISIT TO PERODUA MANUFACTURING SDN BHD Prof. Dr. Masataka Shirakashi

As an off-campus activity on Professional Ethics, Safety and Health in the Ningen-Ryoku Programme,

fifty-five (55) second year MPE students, accompanied by three (3) MJIIT staff, visited the car making plant

of PERODUA MANUFACTURING SDN BHD at Rawang, Selangor on the 18 March, 2014. The departure time

was delayed due to mechanical trouble with the bus and the arrival at the Corporate Building of Perodua

was only slightly before the scheduled time 2:00 p.m.

Despite the delayed arrival the Divisional Executive Coordinator, Mr. Katsuyama, and other staff came to

meet us at the entrance with a “Welcome” message displayed. Mr. Katsuyama very kindly made

arrangements for the Muslim visitors to pray before proceeding with the visit. After a 30 minute lecture on

“Introduction and outline of Perodua and safety for the factory tour”, the students were divided into three

groups for tours of three divisions, Perodua Body Shop, Assembly Shop and Basic Dojo (Development &

Education). At every place we saw a “Welcome MJIIT” panel displayed. The Perodua staff explained

everything clearly and carefully, and responded patiently to questions from the students.

After the tour a discussion session was held, where President Mr. Morita answered cheerfully questions

posed by MJIIT students . The most impressing and encouraging suggestion from Mr. Morita was “Don’t be

satisfied with the present conditions of manufacturing but try always to find problems in them and to seek

for solutions towards better improvement.” Following a photo session refreshments were served and the

MJIIT party left Perodua at 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the visit Professor Shirakashi expressed the

deepest thanks, on behalf of all MJIIT staff and students, to the staff of Perodua for the arrangements made

to accommodate the visit and the warm hospitality shown. - MJIIT Website

INTRODUCTION TO iKOHZA: AIR RESOURCES RESEARCH LABORATORY

Prof. Dr Mohd Rashid Mohd Yusof

Head of Air Resources Research Laboratory

Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT)

The Air Resources group focuses on the safeguard of air resources or ambient air quality against man-made pollution. The research includes surveillance and quantification of pollutants that centres on

detailed physical and chemical characterization of the pollutants in the ambient air or from stationary

sources. The research is directed towards fine particulate size fraction that has a strong association with anthropogenic or man-made pollution sources, which is difficult to control and is known to impose health

problems.

The quantification and characterization of the air pollutant at source is the most important development

towards a better understanding of source-receptor relationship and even for air pollution control performance evaluation. Thus, research on the source emission performance along with the application of air dispersion

and health risk based models are sought to explain such relationship. In addition, the impact of utilizing fossil

or biomass or other alternative fuels towards the local and global climatic change is also an area of interest within the group.
