MNTEWS)

To enable the provision of timely and

effective early warning to the public in the

event of the occurrence of a tsunamigenerated over the Indian Ocean, South

China Sea, Sulu Sea or the Pacific Ocean

that will affect Malaysia. 

Malaysian Government had established

MNTEWS just after the December 26 2004

Tsunami.

Early Warning System

MNTEWS)As national monitoring centre for all earthquakeactivities and tsunami in Malaysia and its adjacentareas on a 24-hour basis troughout the year.

Issuance of information, advisory, notice, earlywarning and warning on the occurrence of earthquakeand tsunami that threaten the security and safety of

Malaysia.

It is an integral part of the Indian Ocean TsunamiWarning System and the Northwest Pacific AdvisorySystem coordinated by the Intergovernmental

Oceanographic Commission, UNESCO.

Normal mode

- transmit to MTEWC every hour through INMARSAT.

Tsunami mode

- transmitting every minute. 

- Replacing Inmarsat communication with VSAT

communication.- Normal mode –  every 1 hour to every 15 minutes

(tsunami mode - every 1 minute) 

MMD has also monitor the sea level at 37 sites

in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean

Earthquake Information and Tsunami Alert/Warning 

==> via various channels such as

- SMS (SMS is used as an early alert on earthquake information and

tsunami warning to relevant personnel and agencies) 

- Hotline (a hotline channel is used to communicate directly between

MNTEWC and National Television)

- Fixed line (whenever necessary) and Telefax

- Website

- Crawlers (in the case of felt earthquake, or tsunami)

- Fixed Line Alert System (FLAS) (ensure the warnings to

evacuate reach the communities)

- Mini studio at MNTEWC

- Tsunami Siren (in the case of evacuation is necessary)

FIXED LINE ALERT SYSTEM (FLAS)

-jointly develop with TELEKOM Malaysia; country communication network

-enables voice message dissemination of earthquake/tsunami warning to reach public in affected areas through the fixed telephone line.

Several public awareness campaigns have been carried out at selected high risk

areas in the 2008 , 2009, 2010 and 2011. Will be continue in next year. 

Public Awareness

Tsunami Drill 

Tsunami drills have been carried out:

- at Tuaran, Sabah in the year 2006 (Pacific Wave 2006)

- at Langkawi, Kedah in the year 2007.

- at Langkawi, Kedah in 14 October 2009 (Indian Ocean Wave 2009)

-Is important to educate the citizen to concern our early warning in order to reduce the risks of fatality.
