    With apologies to Robin Williams

Good Morning Vietnam! Between 1945 and 1954 Vietnam waged

an anti-colonial war against France and

received 2.6 billion dollars in fnancial

support rom the United States. The French

deeat at the Dien Bien Phu was ollowedby a peace conerence in Geneva, in

    which Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam

    received their independence. Vietnam

was temporarily divided between an anti-

Communist South and a Communist North.

In 1956, South Vietnam, with US backing,

reused to hold the unifcation elections.

    By 1958, Communist-led guerrillas, known

as the Viet Cong, had begun to battle the

South Vietnamese government. It was the

longest war in US history and the most

unpopular US war o the twentieth century.

It resulted in nearly 60,000 American

deaths and an estimated 2 million

    Vietnamese deaths. Even today, many

Americans still ask whether the US eort in

Vietnam was a sin, a blunder, a necessary

war, or a noble cause, or an idealistic,

i ailed, eort to protect the South

    Vietnamese rom totalitarian government.

    -Extract rom Digital History

Leap-rog into 2011 and to most young,

    urban Vietnamese, the inamous Vietnam

War is nothing but a distant memory; andthe general consensus seems to be that

most o them could not really care less,

but instead, look orward to the uture and

what can be. Yet, to the millions o tourists

that visit Vietnam every year, the war and

all o its memories, is what attracts them.

Personally, I must admit to an almost total

ignorance o this country that is less than 2

hours ying time rom KL. It had never been,

    until recently, a top-ten priority.

I am in Ho Chi Minh City, previously reerred

to as Saigon, to shoot a commercial orone o my long-standing riendly clients.

They are in the process o launching their

product in the Vietnamese market, hence

they elt they needed to shoot a site-specifc

commercial and thats where I come in.

My frst reaction was defnitely one o

curiosity. I did not know what to expect. The

minute the aircrat touched down and I saw

the remnants o what seemed to be wartime

bunkers, I elt this sudden chill race up myspine. That, however, quickly disappeared,

and was immediately substituted by absolute

terror on the road in Ho Chi Minh City in

peak hour and worse still, I was soon to

discover that it did not make the slightest

dierence i you were in peak hour or not

it was always the same horrifc so much

so that once you accepted the utility o

being concerned, you were let with only

    one alternative laughter! Manic laughter!!!

That said, Ho Chi Minh City is a truly

remarkable city. At times you eel as i youare trapped in a time warp, only to be rudely

and delightully shocked into the reality that

like most Asian cities, Ho Chi Minh City has

a dual personality. Theres the kampung,

gritty almost Ipoh Road side to it and just

around the corner, when you least expect

it, you could be excused or thinking that

you were in one o the great cities o the

world. From roadside stalls to designer wear

paradise in the blink o an eye.

O the many wonderul things that go to

make up Vietnam, one o the most glorious

is the ood. Traditional Vietnamese ood

is a real treat. Always accompanied by

a mountain o the reshest and most

interesting vegetables, it leaves your mouth

watering and wanting more. On the other

hand, theres the let over inuence o the

French the reshest o resh breads and

the most sinul pastries and cakesall

    relatively aordable.

Vietnam is a real adventure. There is so

much about this close neighbour o ours

that it would be impossible to relate in one

sitting and Ive not yet touched on Hanoi!

Teatres Place inthe 21st Century(and why the ourth wall

    needs breaking)

When he isn't hunched over a laptop in his KL home, T. Noah J. Nazim is aull-time student in Concordia University's Creative Writing Graduate Programin Montreal, Canada.

I love technology. Im one o those idealists

who honestly believe that our digital age isthe next step in humanitys march towards

    global synthesis, world peace, collective

    enlightenment and everything groovy.

I also love the theatre. I love that mystical

stillness in the air as the audience holds

its breath in anticipation. I love the way a

guy on a wooden platorm holding a plastic

prop can become the Prince o Denmark

deliberating over whether or not to kill his

uncle. I love the way an entire separate

reality seems to leap into existence as soon

as the curtains rise, pausing or laughterand applause, oering us a sly wink

    through the ourth wall.

These two loves seem to be at odds. Lets

    ace it: technologically speaking, theatre

comes o as an archaic orm o cinema.

Theatre has actors, lights, perhaps some

music and sound eects, and sets whose

changes are limited by the speed and

efciency o the production crew. Cinema

has the screen. Cinema isnt limited by what

you can and cannot put on a stage. As the

technology improves, the things youll seeon the screen are almost limitless.

With cinema, the audience peers through a

window into another world. With theatre, that

other world is only ever ostage, reerred

to by grown men and women in heavy

stied yawns. Hell know what works and

what doesnt, and will adapt accordingly.

    The perormer-audience dynamic is the

    essential characteristic o theatre which

cinema cannot have. Its the one thing that

will preserve theatre as a relevant medium

in the digital age. Its ironic that actors are

so requently told not to break the ourth

wall, when its precisely that breaking o the

ourth wall that lends theatre its particular

    edge over cinema.

I theatre is going to persevere and grow

through the 21st Century and beyond, it

will need to take into account this edict o

interactivity. A play whose perormers are

constantly working o o the audiences

energy is bound to be more successul

than a play that demands that the audience

sit still and watch. The successul stage

perormance is not just a recitation o lines

and an execution o rehearsed movements

its an interaction between our reality and

the reality o the play. Its a conversation

    between audience and perormer.

The uture o the stage is in the hands

o those experimenters who revel in the

interactivity o the stage, who get the

audience involved in the experience. So

    audiences: express yourselves to your

perormers. Let them hear your delight,

your pity, your dread. Perormers: listen to

your audiences. Include them in the action.

Make room or their input and adapt to

    their responses. Demand their attention,

not their silence. A theatre-going crowd

should never be expected to be a passive

audiencethey get too much o that sort o

    treatment rom cinema.

makeup playing a grand game o Lets

Pretend. Its difcult or an audience raised

on flm and television to see how theatre

could ever compete with the wonders o the

screen. Its easy to see why cinema makes

    so much more money.

Theatre must ask o itsel some undamental

questions: what place does it have in our

digital era? How can theatre hope to survive

in an age in which we can all-too-easily get

our entertainment at home, through our shiny

new screens? What does theatre have to

oer that cinema cannot possibly provide?

The answer, I eel, is interactivity.

Cinema is necessarily a passive medium.

The movie-going audience will sit and gape

at action that will continue regardless o the

audiences response to it, be it laughter,

booing or applause. The actors do their

bits in ront o the camera, and the director

shouts, Cut! accordingly. At no point inthe production process will an actor eed o

o audience stimuli. In cinema, the screen

cuts o any possible relationship between

    perormer and audience.

Not so with theatre. A good stage actor is

totally aware o the audience, even i he

pretends otherwise or ear o breaking

    characteror ear o acknowledging a

reality outside o the one he is creating

on stage. He knows when the audience

is having a good time. He acknowledges

laughter with a brie pause, perhaps asubtle change in expression to accentuate

the joke, or an improvised line or two i hes

eeling particularly sure o himsel. When the

audience is bored, hell know that too - hell

hear the coughs, the snores, the barely-

Every other Thursday, I have to wake

up one hour earlier (I usually wake up

at 7.30am). This only started on the last

week o January this year. I am writingthis as the start to this article because

this is actually what I honestly elt when

Faridah and Joe told us 'You all have

to go down to Ipoh to teach some

    secondary schools and Daybreak'

They said it more eloquently I'm sure,

in one o the sta meetings we usually

have at klpac. But yes, that was the frst

thing that crossed my mind, as I politely

nodded and smiled at the news; must I

now stop watching programs at 11pm onAstro so that I can wake up early?!

The frst 'wake up at 6.30am' was very

difcult, not because it was hard to wake

up at 6.30 but because I am the sort o

person who'd not be able to sleep i I

know its something new I have to wake

up or, like the frst day o school you

know? So there I was In my house, at

5.30, and don't know what to do, so I

started thinking about this whole project

(as I watched Astro programs blindly).

They'd be about 6 schools to teach, all

secondary kids. I will have to teach these

6 schools with my riends Chris Ling,

Kelvin Wong, Kimmy Kiew, Qahar, and

Lex. As usual, Penang, KL or Ipoh, new

students can be quite scary. What would

they think o these KL teachers? Drama

teachers some more. Do they have

drama in Ipoh? O course they do, right,

many actors now in KL like Patrick Teoh,

Mano Maniam, all rom Ipoh, so it'd beeasy, right?

Then I remembered Faridah and Joe

also said in the same meeting, 'and got

    Daybreak Centre. Daybreak Centre is

a centre or the disabled'. I have never

had a class with the disabled beore. So

I remember Malik Taufk and I went on

a mad rush around KL trying to looking

or help on how to teach a class or the

    disabled. We met Shantini Venugopal.

'They are just the same, just like all o us'.

O course, I thought to mysel, how

silly o me to think they are otherwise.

I remembered an earlier trip Faridah

and I and the rest o the team madea ew months ago in 2010 when we

visited Daybreak. They were just like

us, everyday people working hard or a

living. So what or want drama right?

Never mind. Kimmy Kiew, Lex and I

drated a simple syllabus ater observing

Shantini's class at MAGIC. They can do

    simple games, simple drama games,

    maybe sing some songs?

'Cannot. First class all the things plan

hancur' Lex said. True, Kimmy also had

same problem, my class ared better.

    The problem?

'They just look at us and smiled, and

when we sing songs then they are happy'.

Maybe we were being too ambitious.

Really, do they need drama? Can drama

    help them?

    The secondary schools children were

having un with us. They want us to comeeveryday to Ipoh. But Daybreak...

Lex, Kimmy and I changed our game.

Lex got the Tamil speaking students.

    Kimmy got the Chinese speaking

students, and I got the ang moh

    speaking ones. Second class, Lex

sang Tamil songs with them, Kimmy

made them dance! I got them to

make puppets and create alter egos,

one man wanted to be 'Samantha!'

Its now our 5th month going to Ipoh,

twice every month, still waking up at

6.30, but still, a long way to go...
