Regional Annual Fundamental Science Symposium 2014 (RAFSS 2014)

8-11 September 2014

PERSADA, Johor Bahru

RAFSS 2014 telah berlangsung dengan jayanya dan telah dirasmikan

oleh Pro Canselor UTM iaitu Tan Sri Dr Salleh Mohd Nor. RAFSS

2014 adalah anjuran bersama dengan Osaka University, Jepun. Selain

Tan. Sri. Dr. Salleh, 6 orang ahli akademik dan penyelidik yang terke-

nal dalam bidang masing-masing telah dijemput sebagai penceramah

jemputan sempena RAFSS 2014. Mereka ialah Profosor Dr. Gopina-

than Sankar (University College London, UK), Profesor Hoe Tan

(The Australian National University, Australia), Profesor Dr. Yeoung-

Sang Yun (Chonbuk National University, Korea), Profesor Dr. Dr.

Ahmad Izani Md Ismail (Universiti Sains Malaysia) dan Profesor Dr.

Samsudi Sakrani (UTM) dan Profesor Hiroshi Umakoshi (Osaka Uni-

versity).

Seramai 94 orang peserta telah hadir bagi membentangkan kertas

kerja masing-masing. Jumlah penajaan pada tahun ini juga amat

menggalakkan iaitu sebanyak RM74200. Penajaan ini adalah hasil

sumbangan dari 19 buah syarikat yang sering terlibat dalam urusan

jual beli dengan pihak institut.

Semoga institut akan terus maju di masa-masa akan datang.

“The Future of wastes Managing and final treatment of Wastes”

Abstrak

In the future, when archeologists dig for clues of our civilization, they may come up with a

conclusion that the 20th century civilization were simply wasteful. Where have all the wastes

from the other civilisations gone to? Over the years there have been great advancement in

terms of technology and knowledge to manage wastes correctly, especially Solid Wastes.

Some countries have started to introduce good practices as the cost of managing waste will

either be borne by the generations that generate the wastes or by the future generations who

will have to suffer. The aim of this talk is to highlight the importance of managing solid

wastes in a sustainable manner, to reduce depositing wastes in the landfills and to encour-

age reuse and recycling. This awareness will hopefully benefit those who wants to ensure

that the earth is habitable by the future generations.
