FORCEPSForceps or forcipes are a handheld, hinged

instrument used for grasping and holdingobjects. Forceps are used when fingers are too

large to grasp small objects or when many

objects need to be held at one time while the

hands are used to perform a task. The term'forceps' is used almost exclusively within the

medical field. Outside medicine, people usually

refer to forceps as tweezers, tongs, pliers, clips

or clampsThere are two basic types of forceps: non-locking

(often called 'thumb forceps' or 'pick-ups') and

locking, though these two types come in dozens

of specialized forms for various uses.

Thumb forceps Thumb forceps are commonly held between the

thumb and two or three fingers of one hand, withthe top end resting on the anatomical snuff box atthe base of the thumb and index finger. Spring

tension at one end holds the grasping ends apartuntil pressure is applied. This allows one toquickly and easily grasp small objects or tissue tomove and release it or to grasp and hold tissuewith easily variable pressure. Thumb forceps are

used to hold tissue in place when applyingsutures, to gently move tissues out of the wayduring exploratory surgery and to move dressingsor draping without using the hands or fingers

    Drain (surgery)

A surgical drain is a tube used to remove pus,

blood or other fluids from a wound. They are

    commonly placed by surgeons or

    interventional radiologists Types of drains

Surgical drains can be broadly classified into:

    Tube drains Corrugated drains

Splint (medicine)A splint is a device used for support or immobilization of limbs or of

    the spine

    It can be used:

By the emergency medical services or by volunteer first

    responders, to immobilize a fractured limb before thetransportation; it is then a temporary immobilization;

By allied health professionals such as occupational therapists,

physiotherapists and orthotists, to immobilize an articulation (e.g.

the knee) that can be freed while not standing (e.g. during sleep).

By athletic trainers to immobilize an injured bone or joint tofacilitate safer transportation of the injured person.

By emergency room physicians to stabilize fractures or sprains

until follow-up appointment with an Orthopedist.

    Scalpel

A scalpel, or lancet, is a small and extremely sharp bladed instrument used

for surgery, anatomical dissection, and various arts and crafts (called a

    hobby knife)

    Gripping a medical scalpel

    1. Palmar grip

Also called the "dinner knife" grip. The handle is held with the second through

fourth fingers and secured along the base of the thumb, with the index finger

extended along the top rear of the blade and the thumb along the side of the

handle. This grip is best for initial incisions and larger cuts.

    2. Pencil grip

Best used for more precise cuts with smaller blades (e.g. #15) and the #7

handle. The scalpel is held with the tips of the first and second fingers and the

tip of the thumb with the handle resting on the fleshy base of the index finger

and thumb. Care should be taken not to allow the handle to rest too far along

the index finger as this promotes an unstable grip and cramped fingers.

    Catheter

In medicine, a catheter is a tube that can be inserted into a body

cavity, duct, or vessel. Catheters thereby allow drainage,

administration of fluids or gases, or access by surgical instruments

    Uses

Placement of a catheter into a particular part of the body may allow: draining urine from the urinary bladder as in urinary

catheterization, e.g., the intermittent catheters or Foley catheter or

even when the urethra is damaged as in suprapubic

    catheterisation.

drainage of urine from the kidney by percutaneous (throughthe skin) nephrostomy

drainage of fluid collections, e.g. an abdominal abscess

    Bandage

A bandage is a piece of material used either to

support a medical device such as a dressing or

splint, or on its own to provide support to the

body; they can also be used to restrict a part ofthe body

    Uses

    Bandage scissors are mostly used

    To size bandages and dressings.

    To cut through medical gauze.

To cut through bandages already in place

    Otoscope

An Otoscope or auriscope is a medical device

which is used to look into the ears

Health care providers use otoscopes to screen

for illness during regular check-ups and also toinvestigate when a symptom involves the ears.

With an otoscope, it is possible to see the

    outer ear and middle ear.

    Bedpan

A bedpan or bed pan is an object used for the

toileting of a bedridden patient in a health care

facility, usually made of a metal, glass, or

plastic receptacle Bedpans are usually constructed of stainless

steel and may be cold, hard and

uncomfortable. On the other hand, stainless

steel is easy to clean and durable, and

bacteria have little chance to survive

    Reflex hammer

A reflex hammer is a medical instrument used

by physicians to test deep tendon reflexes.

Testing for reflexes is an important part of the

neurological physical examination in order todetect abnormalities in the central or

    peripheral nervous system.

Pipette Pipettes are commonly used in molecular biology,

analytical chemistry as well as medical tests

Several different type of air displacement pipettesexist:

    Needle holder

A needle holder, also called needle driver, is a

surgical instrument, similar to a hemostat,

used by doctors and surgeons to hold a

suturing needle for closing wounds duringsuturing and surgical procedures.

Speculum (medical) A speculum (Latin for "mirror"; plural specula or

speculums) is a medical tool for investigating body

cavities, with a form dependent on the body cavity

for which it is designed. In old texts, the speculum

may also be referred to as a diopter or dioptra. Like

an endoscope, a speculum allows entry into a body

cavity; endoscopes, however, tend to have optics

while a speculum is intended for direct vision.

    Stethoscope

The stethoscope is an acoustic medical device

for auscultation, or listening to the internal

sounds of an animal body. It is often used to

listen to lung and heart soundsA stethoscope that intensifies auscultatory

    sounds is called phonendoscope

    Thermometer

An instrument used to measure temperature.

There are many types of thermometers; the

most common consist of a closed, graduated

glass tube in which a liquid expands orcontracts as the temperature increases or

decreases. Other types of thermometers work

by detecting changes in the volume or pressure

of an enclosed gas or by registeringthermoelectric changes in a conductor (such as

    a thermistor or thermocouple).

    Syringe

a device for withdrawing, injecting, or instillingfluids. A syringe for the injection of medicationusually consists of a calibrated glass or plasticcylindric barrel with a close-fitting plunger at one

end and a small opening at the other to which thehead of a hollow-bore needle is fitted.

    Kinds of syringes include

    Asepto syringe,

    bulb syringe, hypodermic syringe,

    Luer-Lok syringe.

    gag

a surgical device for holding the mouth open

to retch, or to strive to vomit.

    To prevent from talking.

To choke, retch, or undergo a regurgitative
