Reactions 972 - 11 Oct 2003 Etofenamate Allergic contact dermatitis: case report A 44-year-old man developed allergic contact dermatitis unrelated to sun exposure during treatment with topical etofenamate gel [‘Teril’] for soreness of the right inner thigh. He also had a 10-year history of contact dermatitis associated with metal ingredients. On day 3 of treatment with etofenamate gel [dosage not stated], the man experienced pruritus at the application site. The following day, erythema, vesicles and exudation developed at the application site. Etofenamate gel was discontinued. He was treated with topical corticosteroids and the eruption resolved. Subsequent patch tests with a standard series and ingredients of the gel were positive for etofenamate and nickel sulphate, but were negative for the other six NSAIDs tested, which included three other anthranilic acid derivatives (mefenamic acid, meclofenamic acid and niflumic acid). Author comment: "Only a few cases of allergic contact dermatitis due to etofenamate have been reported in the English literature." Chu C-Y, et al.
